i'm fairly proud of it. it's not perfect and i'm having some issues still, but i think i'm getting much better at extracting and lighting :)

You are right to be proud of that. Beautiful work!
-
SCHWING!!!
-
No Merlin engine and a lack of red paint on the nose.. not impressed. ;)
-
Looks great Biggles ... but I think the plane is just a little too "soft" if you know what I mean ... if it was just a little crisper that would look good.

It has two running engines and isn't trailing at least one color of smoke, can't be out of Guppy's stable. Not one of mine, either.

Are those hit sprites on the canopy?:)

You obviously know nothing about photo editing.
-
No I don't. Are you a professional photo editor? If so I might respect your opinion, if not then you're just another guy with an opinion. Just like me.:D
-
No I don't make a living at it, I am a software engineer, but I have been using professional photo editing software for years.
It's not an opinion ... "soft" or "soften" is a term used within editing pictures ... as opposed to "crisp". These techiques are usually applied with a "filter".

I agree with Slap. The "soft" appearence gives the picture a "painting" look. Nothing wrong with that. BTW, I am a trained graphic artist.....does that count? :)

btw slap, how do you mean it's too soft? i'm still learning how to do it, all of these have really just been practises/learning experiments. if you could give me any tips it would be great ;)
by soft, do you mean that the edges on the plane are too smooth, or that the lighting effects seem a bit too 'airbrushed' ?
if it's the latter, i didn't soften the image, but i did use dodge and burn to add lighting to the plane to make it look better on the background. that soft look is really what i'm aiming for, but if you know a better way, please share, i'd love any tips you can give me :)
i'll see about that FM2 ;)

Bingo !!!

Dodge and Burn are ways to "soften" too.
Do you have the ability to vary the intensity of "dodge" and/or "burn" when applying them ?
Don't get me wrong ... the picture is beautiful ... I just think that the edges and some of the detail on the plane would look better if they were just a little "crisper". Before the age of digital picture and all these fancy editing tools, photographers use to actually apply vaseline to a clear filter to get the "soft" effect.
I use PhotoShop ($$$) or Gimp (Freeware) which provides all the "tools" (dodge/burn/etc) along with canned "filters". When applying a filter I am given the ability to set the amount of "softening" that I want to apply ... usually via a slider ... which then applies the filter in a "preview" mode so that you can see what it will look like before you really apply the effect.

i'm using photoshop.
that softish look is what i was trying to get, he's flying through the top of the clouds. it isn't so much a real pic, but a practise. i was learning how to use dodge/burn, pen tool and layer masks. the plane is soft because it has a layer of cloud on top of it which is half masked.
it was just a practise shot to learn to use the tools ;)
i'll see about doing you an FM2. which sounds better, on approach to land on CV, or combat shot with a zeke or two?
-
combat shot with a zeke or two :aok
Now I understand the reason for the "soft" effect ... didn't realize he was in a cloud.
Keep experimenting !!! Your results for just starting are really nice.
-
yeah, take a look at the top wing, then at the bottom...
the top is much sharper because of the layer mask, bottom is much softer because he's flying through the top of a cloud :) i'll have to see about the FM2, i need an actor to fly a zeke infront of my FM2 for a decent shot :)

Very nice biggles. :aok
Do you think you could do a bare metal 38 by chance? ( "Putt Putt Maru") :D

I used this picture as well for my desktop, except I altered it and included other items of interest.
