when i drive a tank and see another tank.if im unsure on range i fire the turret MG untill they hit then fire the main cannon?
do u guys think thats a good way to range enemy tanks?,or a waste of time and ammo when u can just fire your main gun till it hits?
-
You are just advertising your position with the tracers to all other tanks.
Learn to use those little hash marks on the main gun sight while zoomed in to estimate range and speed of your target.
Then bracket your target...... remember which hash mark you used to line up.... fire. watch for the "splash" of impact (in front, behind, left right). Adjust fire as needed. Repeat.
-
i normally dont use tracers
-
Still not a great tactic....... the ballistics between the two weapon systems is not similar enough and you are limiting your main gun range to your MG range.... that main gun can fire ALOT further.
-
thats the main bad thing about that lil tactic..i still try to use it by aiming the MG so in can guestimate how high up to aim. but them again i never really try to shoot at a tank from 1.5K out cause i probably wont hit him and he'll move:mad:

Stop wasting MG ammo and just guess & fire your main gun. You will get a feel for distances & elevation with time, you have to practice it again and again, though.
Same with long distance shots. You won't get any better if you do not try it.
Today, just before the server resets, I had a long range Tiger duel with LTARifle. We both were able to get hits within the first 3 shots or so at ranges of 4.7k and 5.1k. You can do that too... but you have to start trying :aok

5.1K?, thought u couldnt see that far away :D

His Tiger was indeed a very small target at that range...

Far enough for you?
Shift+f4 ground view.

whut from the one tank to the other or from the "camera taker" to the tank with cursor on it?
-
Yes the one marked with the pointer.
That tank died in 4 rounds from that firing position.
3rd round turreted it 4th killed it.

wow:aok
from that range..maybe 15-20 shots and ill finally hit it:D

I'd tell you how to do it.
But if I did . I'd have to kill you.

Wes, I'll give a small tip. Practice offline. get a feel for the gun site and distances. I hate driving tanks and GV wars for long periods but sometimes its necessary to defend a base from capture. I was never a good shot with any of the tanks. But over the last couple of years, with lots off practice offline and lots of dieing online I can now get some good shots on stationary targets and also while I'm moving and while shooting at moving targets.
Go offline and practice. start with any tank doesnt matter, personally I started with the Panzer. Pick one of the tanks on the base. drive up to it and line up on it then drive away a few hundred feet. Keep the turrent facing to the rear. stop every few hundred feet and take some shots. keep this up, just go out as far as you can. practice from different angles. After awhile you'll get the feel for the "sight Picture". Once you get good with that then practice firing while moving. drive out away from the tank and then turn back and fire at it while moving up to it. change directions and shot angles. I would suggest starting with the Panzer, then the T34 and then the Tiger. Each tank has its own quirks and effective ranges and "sight picture"
this may or may not help you but it will take some time
and the only time I use a MG against another tank is when I want to annoy them :lol fill their headphones with pings :t

Best bet as Lusche says is to use your main gun, if your using your Pintle gun to range then your wasting valuable time because the range on the pintle gun is only up to 1000, by the time your done trying to range with that the other guy already has you ranged with his cannon and guess what? your dead!
Like anything else it takes practice.

I read in "The Heights of Courage" that in the 60s and 70s before laser range finders that the Israeli's used the 30 cal coax's in their tanks for ranging as the balistics were similar to the 105s they had in their Centurians. I assume this was meant for ranges under 1000yds.

Anyone who turns their broadside to you is a fool, they are offering up a easy kill shot. I enjoy it when they give me a bigger target.

I'm curious to see if this is true in the game. I can tell you in real life the two have completely different trajectories, so it would only do you harm to fire your pee shooter first because it would only reveal your position.
The only weapon system that I can think of that uses this method is the old 106mm recoilless rifle (any Vietnam era vets out there?) It has a two stage firing mechanism/trigger that fires a short .50 caliber spotter round on the pull and the main gun on the push. If the .50 hits then it's time to fire the 106mm which will hit also. (Fun gun, but almost painful to shoot).
