Title: How do you make skins?
Post by: 20MikeMike on January 30, 2007, 11:28:14 PM
1st off, how do you make your own skins? 2nd, can anyone make a skin like Eric Hartmann's winter camo Bf-109 with the black flower petal nose, but modified for a Bf-109G-2?

How you make skins is simple and yet oh so complex.

You make a bitmap. Usually you make a layered file and export it as a bitmap. You have to "draw" it so that the proper parts are in the right place on the bitmap, and the end results looks like a plane when the skin is "wrapped" around the 3D model.

However, HTC only accepts historically accurate skins, so taking Hartmann's tulip pattern and putting it on a 110G-2 is not historical, same as painting bright red and yellow flames on a P51D. Neither would be accepted unless you could prove it existed historically.

However, if you would like to practice or start learning, or just want to play with the skin offline, you could easily put tulip petals on the default 110G skin. I simply wouldn't submit it to HTC.

So I could put the tulip petal on a 109, and even the heart he put under the cockpit?

By the way, how do you make a bit map? And has anyone ever done a Tuskegee Airman P-51 skin "Red Tailed Angels"

Yes there is a P51 skin from that group available already. Scroll through the skins list and you'll find it eventually. I think there's 2 with the red tails.

As for the bitmap, well you use a program. Something that supports layers like photoshop, paintshop pro, gimp, or a similar program. You simply take the existing (default) file and you make layers on top of it. Then you add details and panel lines and so forth on top of those layers, then you add weathering, then when you're done you flatten the layers and save it as an 8-bit ("256 color") bitmap file, with the original file name.

Pink Spitfire is 100% historically (or should that be hysterically) accurate.

Used by 16sqn up to, and past D-Day for low level photo recce missions.
It was found the pink colour worked really well at dawn or dusk.

Yes it can be on a Spit IX, the Pink Spits were fully armed FR IX's. (fighter / recce). So basically a fully armed Spit IX with camera windows.

All FR Spits and Seafires were fully armed versions with the addition of cameras.

Notice the guns, can even make out the lower invasion stripes.

Oh, next skins update should also contain a Pink Mk Ia :) .

Also thinking of doing a 111 Sqn all Black Spit vb.
