Title: Low Frame Rates - Suggestions?
Post by: aknimitz on July 15, 2001, 12:23:00 AM
I am running Win98, newly reinstalled thanks to hybris.  I have an AMD K7 Athlon 650 with 256 Meg Memory.  Video Card is Creative TNT2 Ultra 64 32 Meg.

I am now getting mid 20's with my frame rates when looking out of the cockpit forward.  Previously, I was getting mid 30's.  Hell, sometimes when I take off they go down to 18.

Anyone have any advice/suggestions/recommendations?  Oh yeah, one other thing.  I have manually set virtual memory min/max to 350.  Thanks for the help and comments.

I'd try to optimize your system.  First change the typical role setting to network server instead of desktop computer.  I'd also do a defrag.

You might also try different drivers for the video card.  I'd get some of creative's own drivers, they tended to be faster on the TNT2 cards than the later 6.xx detonators.

(I wrote a pretty good article about how to optimize win98, you might do a search for it.  I might have also writen something a long time ago that got put into HTC's faq file.)

Just wondering ... What is your AGP aperture
size set to? .. try 64 .. it doens't need to be more than 64.
------------
What is your Vcache settings set to ?
------------
You have a lot memory .. I dont think you need to set your virtual memory at min/max 350 ..try backing it down to 250
------------
What resulotion do you fly in [1204] [1280] ??
At 1024 your monitor refresh should be set to
85hz ...at 1280 it should be set to 75Hz.
------------
Delete all TNT2  User Proflies from graphic card ... run AH .. then go back into User proflies and makes any changes you want and save.
------------
If You Are Still Having problems Re install the gaphic card .. but if you do follow these steps.

The very FIRST THING you should do is remove any display driver software listed in the "Add/remove software" applet in control panel. Diamond, for instance, installs it's "In Control Tools", Creative has their "Blaster Control", etc. This should all be uninstalled first. Then reboot...

Your system will then come up virtually the same as it was, but now it's running without the control software, however, the drivers are still active. Before you change to the VGA driver, go into the display properties in device manager and get the list of all the files that the driver uses... you'll use this list later to completely remove the files manually.

Then change to the VGA driver,.. and reboot again. When you come back up, it will be in uglier than sin 16color 640x480 mode. Now if you want to remove all traces of the previous driver, go hunt the files down and delete them. Windows has no mechanism to delete drivers automatically, nor to remove registry entries, so if you really want them to disappear, you must do it manually. Don't forget about the .inf file in C:\Windows\Inf\Other either...

Once you've done all this, then power down and instally your new card. Windows will find it on the way back up and give you opportunity to install the drivers*** and control software.

***  You can now install what ever new drivers strikes your fancy at the moment.

To get rid of all traces of the old drivers, make sure to write down the names and locations of the driver files by using the "Driver file Details" button on the "driver" tab page in your display properites in device manager, BEFORE you start. Then once you come up in VGA mode (Step 2) you can check what driver files are in use again. Then delete all the files that were listed with
the TnT2 card and are not in use with the VGA driver.
--------------
Hope this bit of wisdom at 6:30 in the morning helps ... going back to bed.

Hi Nim,

Have you installed all the updates for win98 and if it isnt 98se, see if you can get it.
As for your virtual mem(swap file) it should be set at 2.5 times your ram(got same ram and I set mine at 640)
Make sure nothing's running in background(ie: taskmanager, screensavers other sw)
Also in control panels power managment make sure everything is set to always on and never off.
As for your vid card, if you can afford a new one get it, tnt past gen. If not don't let any control sw run, just the drivers is enough. On the drivers you'll have to experiment with the ones that work best.
A nice sw tool that I use for every mach I build is TweakUi for Power Users, it can be found atweb page (http://www.jesmar.com) Really a great piece of sw  :D
And try maximizing your internet conn, there's lots of sw out there just for that.

If you need any help drop me a line  mrzippy1964@hotmail.com  I'll be more than happy to give you a hand  :)

That old 2.5 x Ram formula is not valid anymore.  These days folks have much more physical RAM, so we don't tend to need as much swap space.

Generally I would use 250 Min/max with 256, but a couple of games I play wanted more, so I'm running 350 now and all is fine.  Basically, you just want enough... any more will just mean more swap space for your machine to track needlessly.

fly in 16-bit color.  I guarantee it will be faster than 32-bit.  It may not be pretty but you will see a performance difference.
