Title: Another Pic: Turbulence
Post by: Major Biggles on February 01, 2007, 01:35:11 PM
i'm experimenting with new effects and learning some more advanced techniques.

this isn't finished yet, but i thought you might like it anyway :)

i still want to add in vapour trails and perhaps an engine fire with plenty of smoke, and i still need to tinker with the planes to fit them onnto the background more, right now they stick out too much.

i think that i've got the props down though, and i like the flak effects too, but i may work on improving them :)

anyway, hope you like, but remember, it's not finished :)

Just a suggestion, but don't make the flack bursts so uniform. They look to fake.

Forgot to tell you GOOD JOB!!!! Looks really nice.

also with the flak shots, think about a "real" picture....

the chances of catching even one while it is exploding would be rare, let alone most of them.

just black puffs like in the above picture would be better IMHO

yup, i had thought that myself ;)

like i said, i'll probably work on re-doing them, but all these tips and comments are great, it always helps when you're learning :)

OK one last suggestion then I'm done. You might want to grab anouther piece of nose art for the other bomber. That way it doesn't look quite so uniform ya know. Leave the skin the same so you can tell it's the same squadron but make each plane a little different so it looks like two planes in formation.

I have only one suggestion, but it's not related at all to how you could improve the picture.

I don't know if these skins are player created skins from the game, default skins from the game, or if you just created them yourself. But if you use a skin from the game as the basis of one of your pictures, you should give whomever skinned it credit.

It's like the stanza of the poem I put in my sig. When I put it there, I gave the author credit for writing it.

I'm not trying to imply that you run around stealing other people's work and then take credit for it, but it might look that way to someone who has created a skin and then they see it in your picture. That's my only suggestion.

Great pics, though.

Biggles, what process are you using to do the prop blur?  I've been messing with "Flash" and while on the squads Web Site (http://475thfg.bravehost.com/) I used a number of frames from a film to build the 38 animation in flash I'd like to do my own. Any tips would help shorten the learning curve a bit.

Thanks for any help,

for the props, you take a front on pic of the plane with the engine turned off. put that pic into your editor and cut out the props (select, extract, whatever). once you have the individual prop blades, use the elliptical selection tool to get an even selection around them. then use radial blur, i tend to use around 15.

once you have that, reselct and copy. paste it as a new layer on your original pic, and then use the transform tools to first reduce the props to the right scale, and then use the distort tool to change the perspective. then just move the layer about and clean it up with the eraser to make it look right ;)

Fugitive:  When you say "Flash".... which one are you talking about?  I would like to start doing more with art again as it is a major hobby of mine but I want to broden to working with computer stuff more.  I noticed in yours you have a Ki84 fly by in the background, thats funny!

Biggles:  What program are you using?  Photoshop?

I use Flash 8. The web p-age in the link I made. The 38 is 4 frames of a film imported to flash. The "Ki" in the background is really just some texted I used flash to run across the sky. The "rocket" buttons were built in flash using the vector graphic and built into a flash animation. The logo was drawn in Flash as well and could be easily animated. All the names on the roster were also done in flash with an idea to turn them into buttons to link to the "nose art" picture some of us have stored on "Picture Hanger".

I've got about a half dozen animations that I've done. With that practice I'm getting quicker with the program and I think my drawing is getting better  :) Got a few more ideas for the "virtual Pilot" page dealing with Acs high stuff. :D
