Hi everyone, I'm new to this and I am just blown away by the realism and on line community. I'm going to neeed to get my self a joystick pretty darn quick any recommendations. I used to use alot of flight sims years ago, but never as real as this. I can't wait to get up to speed and join somebodys squadron! I live in Yorkshire England and I am near the home of so many of these war time bomber bases , I love the sounds and smells of old props! Oh and how do you get hooked up for the the 'verbals' on the radio, do I have to buy a headset, how much are they ????
Looking forward to getting on board...

Welcome to AH emalo
I wouldn't go spending a whole gobb of loot on a J/S, get a standard twisty stick til you get the hang of things.
Any decent $20 headset will work fine for AH. The radio "lingo" and comm's will come in time.
Feel free to ask any LTAR for assistance, we'd be more than happy to help ya get started.
P.S. For your own safety, stay away from Shawk, the HA's, AK's, BK's and most of the FB's. They will get you in trouble everytime;)
Have a nice Day

You should be able to find a good joystick from Saitek or Thrustmaster. Save yourself some time and headache and avoid Logitech. Both Saitek and TM have good line ups that have options @ different price points. A lot of the folks here who are in for the long haul have over time purchased CH Products and generally have nothing but praise that company (myself included) But a full CH setup is going to run you over $300 (not sure what that would be in pounds).
Basically in a joystick you want @ least 1 8-way hat for views, more is good. Throttle and rudder input can be a big plus as well.
On the mic side of things just about anything will do I bought a little $20 headset and it's been working for me so far, even survived a couple of it's own flights across the room on some of the bad nights. :)

sticks and headsets can range in price, but aren't usually to pricey :)
as for squads, you'd be very welcome to fly with 71 squadron for a bit to help you find your feet, it's a large squad, plenty of brits, and filled with nice guys and good pilots. if you like us, we can send you a squad invite ;)

Found out the hard way that Logitech headsets don't like solo flights across the room.........I hate those bad nights!

Actually, Logitech spawns it's headsets from the belly of the underworld. They do, in fact, Enjoy being tossed across the room and go out of their way to cause this whenever they can. I've got a Logitec Logo on the opposite wall, I aim for it now. I won't by a new headset until this one physically breaks, it's a test of wills, but I'll triumph, I do keep trying.
Welcome to Aces High emalo.

Somebody mentioned "any old twisty stick" -- any EXCEPT a Logitech stick. Don't buy their joysticks, ever. It will stop functioning properly inside of 1-2 months.

Hello fellow Brit (Coventry here) the best advise has already been given but I'll repeat it DO NOT BUY LOGITECH. They won't last more than 3 months. Pop down to PC world and get a Saitek. You need a 8 way HAT switch (views) and a rudder twisty stick. If you can, go for the upper end of Saitek for about 35 quid. I use a stereo head set cost 30 quid but PC world have cheaper one's for 15 to 20 Quid. May wanna scan your local car boot for head sets...couple of three quid type of thing. You may even find a good stick for a fiver.
The "Web Page Help" (when in tower) is the instructions please make sure to read KEY / DOT commands. A 30 min read saves 3 days of asking questions. The hole thing is worth the read to bring you up to speed.
May I also recommend a 4 pack mini fridge for the Friday night Loooong session. Saves all that running AFK :D
Learn these phrase's "I'll be with you shortly. These guys are relying on me right now". "Oh, I'v seen it. I'll be down in a bit". These only work on the wife / girlfriend a few time be cunning :aok

Hi emalo. I'm based near Hebden Bridge/Halifax so practically neighbours. Online handle is BMwhisky, but since demise of BM squad will probably change back to plain ole "whisky" soon.
I'd be happy to help out if you need. :)

That aside my squad is made up of Brits so your more than welcome to come fly with us. You too whiskey!

I would have to disagree. I use a logitech, have done for about 3-4 months, works fine! Its attack 3, and im happy with it! Ok, so its not twisty stick, but still works!

I have to agree with everyone about Logitech. Krusty said they'll stop functioning properly in 1-2 months. I happen to own a Logitech stick and it's NEVER functioned properly!

That is a load of horse manure, to be kind about it. I have used Logitech for years. I upgrade to newer ones about every 3 years but only had one break. It was 5 years old when it broke!

Buy a joystick, fly for awhile..if you like it then buy a headset.
DO NOT buy a plantronics 40. It is Th3 SUCK!
Yea I JUST joined a few days ago. Loving it and, I can see something that would build up. Nothing too serious as to take too many hours like MMORPG's do, but enough to suffice my gaming addiction, coupled with the BEST community I have encountered thus far. :)
btw I bought the ps33 saitek found at best buy for about 40 bucks.
It's a C+ or B- joystick. Stick is too long. The hat is too tiny and the unit itself is very light (gotta hold it down moreso than others) and the usb cable is WAY too short.
The nice thing is, there is a nice button that you can easily hold down while hatting to do upper views. Lotsa buttons to program but , you'll have to experiment with those as I'm just trying mine out.

<-- Avid Mouse user that still has no mic.

What Raptor doesn't realize is that the minute he does get a mic we're going to kick him out of the squad....
