Fw 190A-6 is a mid grade variant of Fw 190A-5 and Fw 190A-8. 190A-6 had the same engine output as the A-5 and has the revised wing structure of the A-8 variant that allows it to carry 2x outboard Mg 151 cannons.

MG151 and 30mm and WGr. It was essentially an A-8 weapons platform, only with 7mm cowl guns. No reason for the A-6, because there's no incentive to fly the A-8. As-is the weapons are the only advantage the 8 has over the 5. Put in the 6 (with identical performance to the 5) and the A-8 never gets used again. Period.
It's better to have the -5 than the -6, because there's some difference between the versions.

There must be something better about the FW-190A-8. Did it have better construction or armor, or increased range? I fly the FW-190A-5 because of the superior maneuverability, but I always imagined that the A-8 was faster.

Only below 2k or so, I think. The A-6 would negate any reason to ever take the A-8. Considering it performs almost identical to the A-5 (considering the same weapons setup) I don't think it's worth adding if it negates the A-8.

Well, the "head-on and run" crowd would still take the FW-190A-8. But the folks who enjoy maneuvering combat in the FW-190A-5 would still probably use the smaller gun package, so you're right; the FW-190A-6 does seem kind of pointless.

Let me reword this again.
Introduce the A-6 (mid-1943 to mid 1944) so we can have a mid-grade variant of A-5 and A-8. After the A-6 is shoved in to the lineup then introduce a later, improved Fw 190A-8 (late ~1944) that produced 2080 hp at full power. This later A-8 version had wooden paddle-blade props to slightly improve climb rate.
