4 hate-crime beating teens get probation
By NOAKI SCHWARTZ, Associated Press Writer Sat Feb 3, 4:19 AM ET
LONG BEACH, Calif. - Four of nine black teenagers convicted in the racially charged beating of three white women on Halloween were sentenced to probation Friday.
Punishment could have ranged up to confinement in a California Youth Authority lockup until age 25. The teens were ordered to serve 250 hours of community service, 60 days house arrest, and take anger management and racial tolerance programs.
"It was an awful crime. Terrible, emotional and physical injuries," Juvenile Court Judge Gibson Lee said.
Last week, Lee convicted nine teens — eight female and one male — of felony assault, with a hate-crime enhancement against all but one.
Among those sentenced Friday were an 18-year-old youth, his twin sister, their 16-year-old sister — who didn't receive the hate-crime enhancement — and another 16-year-old girl.
The other five defendants face sentencing next week. Names of the defendants were withheld because they are juveniles or were juveniles at the time and were tried as juveniles.
The 18-year-old male teenager had pleaded with the judge, saying he was innocent and tried to help the victims, including taking a skateboard away from an assailant who was using it as a weapon.
"What will my life be like? I'm 18 and convicted of a hate crime," he said.
The victims were in an affluent area of Long Beach that draws crowds with fancy Halloween displays when a crowd of black youths yelled racial insults and one shouted "I hate whites," according to prosecutors.
One victim testified the trio was pelted with small pumpkins and lemons. A witness testified two of the women were beaten with skateboards.
Prosecutors said the beating only ended when a black motorist stopped, pulled the assailants away and shielded the women with his body.
"I'm not sure if all the emotional scars will ever completely vanish," 21-year-old Loren Hyman, one of the victims, said earlier in a victim impact statement. "I feel like the beating I endured on Halloween night is still not over."
Two 15-year-old boys face trial later on charges of felony assault with the hate-crime enhancement.
if you really think the 15 year olds still to be sentenced will get something other than probation you are deluded.
the "Adults" of 18 only got probation.
this one just kills me:
"What will my life be like? I'm 18 and convicted of a hate crime," he said."
guess you shouldn't have beaten up on some one then huh?
if you have been following this case you probably aren't surprised... I still call bull**** though.
-
I agree with your disgust, they should not have been arrested and given probation, they should have just been shot at the scene. It's all about deterrence.
-
Totally hypocitical B.S.
But it's been going on for years and years, so i'm not suprised.
-
Didn't you know? Hate crimes only count against the whites, not for.
-
i srive right thru downtown long beach everyday on my way to work. the courthouse area had been packed with news fans and extra police for days. google up some of the earlier information about the beatings and you will find they were especially savage and brutal. it's a crock of S that they got off so easy.
i'm disgusted.

One of the girls was battered so severely she will require ongoing surgery to repair multiple fractures around her face and to reposition one of her eyes.

I agree. If you kill someone you should be put to death. It's not any worse (or less worse) if you kill someone because of their race, religion, or sex.
Murder is murder and Yahweh says, "An eye for an eye, *****!"

Now they do, but we'll just ignore the other 300 years for now. Not saying this is right at all, a hate crime is a hate crime and the black community would be up in arms if the reverse situation happened most likely, but I could imagine some people haven't forgotten the Jim Crowe era.

300 years? , 300 years?, you want to spend your life in the past or live in the present and plan for the future?
don't try to lay guilt on me for what happened 300 years ago.
-
You know the black people and the white people that lived 300 years ago both have something in common....................... ............................. ..they're dead.
get over it.
-
sandie gets it in this case... motivation should not be a factor... I would go farther tho and say that all crime is a form of "hate".
debonaire... damn... I hope you are amusing yourself at least.. that is really all we can ever hope for in any case.

Show me a slave that I(or anyone here for that matter) owned in the past 300 years or the excuse is not valid.
-
I haven't forgot the jim crowe area... the stupid rednecks shot us (no pun intended) all in the foot over that one... it gave us gun control.
We had little or no gun control before that but the KKK pinheads all wanted to disarm the "darkie" so they passed all kinds of gun laws that only applied to blacks (no one would apply em to whites right?).
the lesson from jim crowe should be that all race based law is evil and ends up hurting everyone.
you can't believe in equality and then pass laws based on race. no way to squirm out of that truth.

There is black racism as other, they should be equal to the law.
All racial crime is equally bad.

wrong....
crime is bad. it matters not how much or little you liked the victim.

270 years ago, my great great great great great grandfather was jailed for 2 days because of public intoxication by the Germans. I believe he was falsely accused. I DEMAND REPERMATIONS FROM THE GERMAN PEOPLE! DARGH!
-
The Judge was not going to have his name associated with another race oriented riot and burning down of parts of L.A.. You can convict for capitol murder and send to jail or execute a black person in L.A. for killing 50 white people on film with a baseball bat one at a time while smiling for the camera and yelling racial epitaphs. But the moment you convict that black person for murdering those 50 white people as a race based hate crime, L.A. will be burnt to the ground as a group response.
That will be the only legacy that will go on the history books for that judge. How many times has L.A. been burned???????
-
I demand a large sum of money because my ancestors weren't told that 300 years later their slaves would be complaining about the past.

That these laws got put in place is sad.

You can't blame my ancestors for slavery or its resultant evils.
None of my kin-fokes owned a slave. They was too pore.
Mind, they might have wanted to some kinda bad...

Exactly right and exactly why hate crime convictions are usually more harsh on whites.

From what I can find on my fathers side of the family, they were brought over from England in chains and the first generation were no better than slaves, and they were Welsh....I hear with a tendancy to sheep and chicken theivery which got them in chains on a boat bound for the colonies.......
So reparations...heck everyone else can get in line behind me in that case...I still feeeeeeelllllllll the weight of those chains and the revulsion that comes with riding on sailing ships....ohhh the painnn and the suffering...ok whar is my 300 gazilion sheep and chickens.......and an apology from the Queen of England to my family...hhhhmmmmmmmm........
-
my family never had slaves, if they did i might be rich today, so i should get reparations for never having slaves.
-
Many slaves were captured by their own kind and sold to slave ships. Many were also sold by their families.
I do not condone slavery but it happened.. nothing can change that. If people want reparation for something that never happened to them, I can't see the point. No one now living had anything to do with what happened so long ago.
If some folks still want reparation... we should offer a free cruise back to Africa one way of course. Anyone wishing to be an American and equal should stay. No hyphenated so called Americans need apply.
As for HATE crimes.... I see no difference in someone beaten for his/her race, creed, color as someone beaten for anything else... money, coat, shoes...
If you want equality.... quit trying to be different.... your either American or your not. This means everyone of all colors.
-
I'm not putting anyone to blame for the past....and I'm certainly not saying this case was justified. Just pointing out that there were many hate crimes committed in the past with no consequence(Emitt Till, Alabama Schoolgirls etc.) that for it to swing the other way once isnt anything new?
-
Couple of things that irk me about this...
Slavery was not exclusive to whites. Every race has had it at one point in time, and most of them were slaves to their own race. For anyone to say "You owe me" is a total crock.
Those kids got off easy because the black community would have rioted and thrown a fit. Whites will just go home and blog about it or complain on a bbs.
"Hate crimes" is one of the more stupid things this nation has come up with. It's right up there with being politically correct, outsourcing jobs, and allowing illegal immigrants to stay in country.
A crime is a crime. All "hate crime" is doing is allowing reverse discrimination. It's going to get to a point where if a white person sneezes they'll be sued for contaminating the persons oxygen.

Shouldnt swing any way at all, but. The racial crap in this country will never end in my lifetime Im guessing. You can only take being force fed this bull**** for so long you only end up caring about you and yours. I guess that works as planned for the people that thrive on this stuff.

I hate everyone equally.

If blacks were treated as badly as my grandfather and his father were treated in the coal mines when they got here...
They would get all weepy and nostolgic for the good old days of being slaves on the plantation.
Where is my reparations? the frigging mines are still open.

The sentence is a crock. They should do time, at least the older kids.
Now if you think racism and blacks being treated as second class citizens ended 300 years ago I'll be happy to point out how wrong you are.
-
In an above Post it was pointed out that there were "white" slaves in the US also. Most of them came from Europe....England, Wales, Germany etc.
In exchange for room and board these "Indentured Servants" were sometimes given little food, no education, a place to sleep under a roof somewhere....maybe.....for their labors. Some were found buried in basements. Was a show devoted to it on the History Channel (I believe)
Life was not at all good for them either. Just proves that those who are greedy will take advantage of anyone at anytime.

MT... some racism is bad.. some is just wrong but unavoidable and not really important.
When you throw out "racism" you are not really saying anything.
Give me an example of your idea of current racism... something specific... and I will tell you if it should be a crime or not since you seem incapable of making a rational judgement.
In the case of the kids here... racism caused the blacks to act as they did. they hated the others because they were white. the hatred is not a crime... the beating was.
sooo.. give me an example of the racist crimes you see every day please.

Racist crimes? What are you talking about? I never mentioned racist crimes.
I'm just amused at the poor oppresed white folks who are so downtrodden by society now that the black man is getting all the goodies.. lol.
That sir.. is funny.
-
Did you even read the article? Some colored boys beat some white ladies nearly to death, dislocating eyes and such, and they get off with a slap on the wrist. Oh, yes, we evil Aryans are certainly oppressing the black man.
I've never mistreated anyone because of their skin color (or any other physical attribute), so I object strongly to being lumped in with those who do - and punished for it.

Go read my 1st post Benny. then get back to me.

I don't see how this can be interpreted in any other way than "Blacks are still being treated as second class citizens." Seeing as how the colored boys are getting off pretty much scott free after ruining someone's life, I don't see what basis you have for saying that. I don't know about where you live, but where I live (and in the story), white folks have to defer to colored people. Never mind that I've never done anything to them.
-
300 years, no.
But watch out for it reverting. Who doesn't recognize "My grades are only lower cos I'm black" etc.
Oh, my ancestors were slaves too...a looong time ago, - from Ireland and more.

I have invariably found that those who say, "My grades are only lower 'cause I'm black" happen to be disrespectful to the teacher and don't do much work. The black students who are polite and study hard get good grades, just like the white students who do so. Moreover, the white students who are disrespectful and don't work get bad grades, too (I would know, I was one of them).

"eight female and one male"
Colored boys indeed. :aok
You want to talk about society today and the continuing issues blacks deal with I'll be happy to go into it with you. I don't think it is appropriate for this thread. Your response to my post is proof of that. The perpetrators in this case weren't treated harshly enough. Racism or slavery or any other social stigma you may want to dig up are irrelevent to this topic.

those are sellouts and oreos who are just "acting white" to please the whitie. Pretty soon they'll wanna move out of a ghetto and move into a nice neighbourhood with the whitie. And if we allow that, what would happen to those who stay in a ghetto?
