I recently had a hard drive failure and I’ve just about got everything up to scratch, but I’m having one problem with my motherboard/front USB ports, they're not detecting sweet fa joystick/printer etc.
I’ve installed all the drivers and utilities off the Dell CD that came with the PC and I’ve still got no clue why it’s not working.
Can anyone help ? In the mean time I’m going to try and find the answers from Google.
P.S: Driver issue maybe ?

Thanks for the quick response sir, I've got my USB controller enabled in BIOS so that should not be the problem. I've tried using every USB slot on my motherboard so that counts out a fried USB port.
P.S: I'm sure POST would tell me if anything was wrong on boot up, error messages, beep codes and all that good stuff...
Any other help would be great... If not I can always ring dell on Monday if need be.

Don't know what OS or what service pack your on, but with Windows 2000 and USB 2 there is no support/drivers until you do Windows updates.
So might want to check the windows updates under hardware.

@ anyone, I fixed the problem last night after some brain storming with a good friend of mine.
I went into device manager and uninstalled my USB Root Hub and rebooted my PC. when It loaded up it found the hardware and reinstalled the driver and now all is well.
P.S: Sorry for the lack of info Kev, just so you know I have Windows XP ( Server Pack 2)
Guys and thanks for your help.

One other thing I just ran into is that the front panel USB hookups on my system seem to be under powered for whatever reason. Although I have never had a problem with my TM Cougar setup (that I know of) and another USB key that holds a lot of work information. But the problem did occur after getting a different USB key from a trade show with all our lead information from customers who came by our booth. The original USB key that I use came from the same trade show in 2006 and was 30MB while this one was only 16MB and XP gives me the error message that points to the front panel being under powered. SO just check that and see if that happens again in the future.

And for future reference, the latest Dells (an E520, in this case) have BIOS settings to enable/disable the front USB ports seperately than the rear USB ports. As such, it is totally possible that the rear USB ports work fine and the fronts are "dead" as a result of a BIOS setting...
