Title: Im so clueless
Post by: ronwood06 on February 05, 2007, 09:50:05 PM
  I have a compact preserio  pentium 2 intel MMX , with 384.0 MB RAM that a friend gave to me and i dont have any idea how to upgrade it or if its worth upgrading. Can someone tell me what i would need to have done  to have the best performance for a moderate price?  (For instance pentium 3, video card, sound card, Windows version?) Thanks I hope someone can help!!

Pentium 2's are dead. No upgrades possible. Donate it to Goodwill.

Higher end Pentium 3's can still have a life as low traffic web servers, but even those are reaching their end life.

Pentium 4's while still in use and available are retired as of last year.

Pentium D (Duo-Core) are still widely available.

Pentium Core 2 is the current Intel processor.

there 2 main companys that make processors (CPU)  for computers

Intel makes pentiums , Duo core , pent d ..ect

AMD makes Athlons/ A2's/ duel core 64 bit ... ect

A computer with a 2.0 ghz cpu   and  512mb of ram along with a good video card either agp or pci-e makes for a Good gamer .

to put it simply  you have to put the video capability's of a Xbox /PS into your computer to make it a good gamer  thats why we use high end video cards .

other wise the computer is just a word processor with min video capabilitys .

To build a good gamer it takes a fair amount of study and observation of what everyone else is using  because theres so much stuff ... bolth AMD and Pentium have Forums like this that have tons of good info .

I have an Athlon 64 3200 chip that runs at 2.2 gig, and it is a year or 2 behind the curve--also have a 256 meg vid card (fx5700) that is ALso a year or 2 behind the new---game runs fine, and the motherboard I just had to buy to replace the one that died was only 59 bucks (I'd expect cpu would be similar)--however, I betcha a modern mb won't fit in a pentium 2 box, also prolly need new power supply.....hmm..best bet is go to a mom and pop computer store ans tell them how much money ya have to spend:aok
