Title: Question for Scotch Drinkers
Post by: Xargos on February 06, 2007, 04:38:25 PM
How many of you only drink scotch?  If you do what brand do you prefer, what size bottle do you normally buy, what's the price in your area and how do you prefer to enjoy it?

I drink Johnnie Walker Black with ice and a splash of water to activate the taste.   A 1.75 Litres bottle goes for about $63 down here in Charleston S.C.

Im a Glenlivet and Macallan fan. I prefer it with one or two melted icecubes depending on size of icecubes and ammount in glass.

Size of bottles is usually one liter, or 0,7.

my favorite whiskey is jameson irish whiskey the 12 yr old is very good but the 18 yr old is superb.  my favorite scotch whiskey is usqueabach.  it is a blended whiskey but I prefer it to the single malts any day.

having typed all that I'd rather have maker's mark.  bourbon whiskey is a mighty fine sipping whiskey and you'll be hard pressed to do better than maker's mark in my opinion.

Glenlivit is good stuff, but I prefer Aberlour. Tastes better and less expensive. Aberlour a'bundah is the shizznik.

My dad just uncovered a bottle of makers mark in his basement from 1955.  I cant really find a web site that would put a dollar value on that but I offered my old man 100 bucks for it, cash on the barrell head.  (maybe it was wild turkey???).  i wanted to see if it would taste like fine aged whiskey or rubbing alcoho.

It would taste like 4 year old bourbon. Spirits do not age in the bottle. Aging only occurs in wood.

Glenlivet and Aberlour are the same company (along with Scapa, Ballantines, a whole mess of other scotches, Pernod, Ricard, Seagrams, Jim Beam, and Wild Turkey).

Different distilleries though.
I'm currently working on a 14-year cask strength Glenlivet bottle I picked up at the Aberlour distillery in December. I was too cheap for the single-cask Aberlour.

1955 maker's should be fun, but once it's sealed in the bottle, it doesn't age. You need the oak barrels for that.

The first bottle of Maker's Mark was sold in 1958 and featured the dipped red wax seal.

If you've got one of the first, I'd think some Maker's Mark devotee would pay big time for that.

Good luck!

Last time I was sober, man I felt bad
worst hangover that I ever had
it took six hamburgers and scotch all night
nicotine for breakfast just to put me right
'cos if you wanna run cool
if you wanna run cool
if you wanna run cool, you got to run

Scotch....*shudder*

Just cannot drink the stuff.

Same thing with cognac.  When I was in Africa my host brought out a ludicrously expensive cognac to "treat" us.  I couldn't drink it.  I ended up excusing myself to go to the bathroom and poured it down the drain.  I have no idea how many hundreds of dollars I wasted, but for me it was undrinkable and I didn't want to offend the guy.

Five minutes later he poured me ANOTHER one despite my protestations.  That time I was able to say that I could only handle what I had already been given and this was accepted.  My host ended up drinking that one.

Obviously my day in day out scotch is Craigenmore, Have a bottle of abunadh in the office, (thanks to a player) that is getting very close to being opened for a special occasion. Havn't ever tried abunadh before. Will drink that with just a splash no rocks.

Craigenmore I drink just on the rocks.

Others I enjoy
Might have spellings wrong.

Glenmorenga 18

Royal Locknar.

Oban

Laphroig , thanks to Blue Baron

I have ..

18 yr Glenlivet
15 yr Glenlivet (French Oak Reserve)
12 yr Balvenie

All are very good IMHO. I never liked the Macallan. I also keep a bottle of Makers Mark just for those times when I want something different.

I agree about the Aberlour, good stuff indeed. Even the 10 yr old is very smooth.

Amazing how good Laphroaig is with just a tad of water in it, isn't it?

Not nearly as good without the water but wow... it's so good with a wee bit of water.
Title: Question for Scotch Drinkers

abunad'h was supposedly born as an attempt to approximate "good scotch" as it was made at the end of the 19th century. It's quite a different taste, and worth sampling.

I was skeptical about the "splash of water" doctrine, but, indeed, the tiniest drop seems to do the trick (especially if you've got an unfiltered-or whatever it is they do-scotch)

I know most of you "pure" whiskey drinkers will probably snub your noses at it, but my favorite drink is Drambuie.  Sure, a great aged single malt is a beautiful thing, but Drambuie is like liquid gold that wakes up all  your tastebuds and says "hey lets go party!"

Awesome stuff.

My regular is Aberlour, although I've got a bottle of Laphroaig that gets the occasional sip taken out of it. Single malts in this house are drunk neat (with a couple of drops of water to bring out the flavour).
When the unwashed masses come over I break out the Famous Grouse, a decent enough drink for a blend that doesn't break my heart to see polluted.

Cheers

You ought to drop those clowns at Laphroaig a line; they still don't know how to drink their own whiskey.

Cardhu- before they changed the set up, Macallan as an everyday/week thing, Johnny Walker black sometimes, To be honest, I like Famous grouse too, It all depends on the mod and whom I'm with as to what I'll pull out, I have about 2 bottles (one in a decanter) of the orginal Cardhu and so I really ration myself on that one.
Never put Ice in any of my whisky, usually one/2 fingers of whisky then the same for water.

I never really understood why anyone would want to drink scotch when we have bourbon available.

I used to only drink scotch in college, mostly cause I could rest easy my roomates would leave it alone.

Maybe, but I bet they know how to spell it.

Scotch is whisky (without an 'e'). Go and check a bottle if you don't believe me.

Depending on mood, I'll generally go with either a Springbank or Talisker. Usually straight, no ice.

There are many fine Bourbons available, and many Scotch whiskies are Bourbon like, but the range of styles of Scotch goes way beyond that of Bourbons.

Its not really a 'one or the other' type thing.

Yeah I know, not apples to apples.  Especially when you start talking about single malt vs. blended, many ranges of flavor.

I've never noticed a 'different' kind of buzz from drinking any form of alcohol, beer, wine, spirits, whatever.  I believe it is all ethanol at its basis, just how it is processed and the flavor it has makes one drink different from the other.

Also, nomatter what it is, if I drink too much of it I get a hangover, no if ands or buts.  Sugary drinks, like schnaps, ugg, hangover even worse.

If you mix soda with your whisky it's going to give you a hangover.  Next time you get a good quality bottle only use water,or drink it strait, and stay with that one drink all night.  I think you will understand then.

Do not be tempted to drink any other kind of booze that night (or day if your like me :D  ).
