hope to see Flyboys soon, haven't heard much about it though........
Pearl was a flop.......
Baa Baa Black Sheep is always a favorite for entertainment....

flyboys was great, infact, i should have added it in my post. dark blue world is great too, but not as well known, it's about the polish BoB pilots, quite dark and moving but a great film.

Midway
Flight of the Intruder
Iron Eagle 4
The Final Countdown
-
Memphis Belle... 50% because of the movie and 50% because of the music.
-
(1) 12:00 High - they don't make 'em like they used to :).
(2) The Right Stuff
(3) Memphis Belle
(4) Always - story was ok, the flying sequences and special effects were outstanding
(5) Battle of Britain - great aerial cinematography before the days of CGI
(6) By Dawn's Early Light - not a well known HBO movie about a B-52 crew
(7) NOVA: Battle of the X-Planes - NOVA documentary on the "LocMart" and Boeing competition for the JSF - I know, not a movie but very well done
(8) 633 Squadron - yeah, a little cheesy but still a classic in my book
(9) Bridges at Toko-Ri
(10) Apollo 13 - not quite an aviation movie and is higher up on my list of all time fave movies but Jim Lovell's true story about his impossible carrier night landing when everything went SNAFU always get's me
Honorables - I lump films like Top Gun, Air Force One, Iron Eagle (no 1), Behind Enemy Lines into the same category

Nice list (http://www.airaffair.com/Library/films.html) I found Googling aviation films.
Dr. Strangelove? :lol I guess it did have a significant airplane theme in it... :) I like Kubrick's films.

Aces High (1976)
Director: Jack Gold
The air battle on World War I's Western Front was brutal. This story focuses on one British pilot fighting the Germans.
The Right Stuff: Awesome
Hell's Angels: Amazing number of airplanes involved
Midway and Tora! Tora! Tora!: Great in the original "Sensuround"

Hell, if you liked "Always", you should see the ORIGINAL version, "A Guy Named Joe" with Spencer Tracy, Irenne Dunne, Ward Bond, and Van Johnson. Spencer Tracy was the ghost pilot, Irenne Dunne was his girl friend, Ward Bond was his best friend, and Van Johnson was the P-38 pilot Spencer Tracy played "guardian angel" to. It's a lot better than "Always".
I bet I've been asked a couple of hundred times if "SaVaGe" cam from 12 O'Clock High. It's one of my favorite movies, but no, it didn't. "SaVaGe" comes from my Cherokee Indian heritage.
Another great movie, although you don't really SEE any flying, is "Command Decision". There's something odd about it though, if you see it, you'll figure it out, eventually.

If you haven't seen Dark Blue World, i highly recommend it, only saw it a couple times here.
1. Battle of Britain
2. Dark Blue World
3. Midway
4. The Hour and fifteen minutes of awesome graphics and fighting in the middle of Pearl Harbor > Tora! Tora! Tora!
5. FlyBoys(graphics are awesome, however the Red Baron character in the movie, the bad guy in this case, is black with all other fokkers red, woulda been better if it was the other way around, but still good.)
-
tuskegee airmen was an okay film. It should have been better. Even many of the airmen alive weren't completely happy with the film.
I thought it was a nice film.
12 o'clock high and Dark Blue World are my top 2 favorite aviation films.
-
memphis belle
best part was when the tail gunner hit a 109, shouts with glee at the kill, then the downed plane chops right through the tail section of the rookie b17 next to them.
war must be hell.
dambusters close second for the music.
-
Thanks JB88! LMBO!
HiTech: What do you make of this?
Skuzzy: I can make a crane, or a hat, or a paper airplane!
Airplane definitely counts, it was a war movie (well, a small part of it!)
Ted: My orders came through. My squadron ships out tomorrow. We're bombing the storage depots at Daiquiri at 1800 hours. We're coming in from the north, below their radar.
Elaine: When will you be back?
Ted: I can't tell you that. It's classified.
I also liked "Tuskeegee Airmen", but felt it could have been better.
I guess when it comes down to it, there's a lot of "good" ww2 movies, but very few "great" ones.
I guess I'd count Tora Tora Tora and maybe Midway, but that was more about the back story and only partially about the air war.
There was one, I think it was called "Bomber Command" or "Strategic Command" about a pilot on the B-47s flying the SAC flights during the cold war. It was interesting enough, despite a lack of real action.

The Red Baron in Flyboys was the one that let the American Pilot live when his guns jammed, and the American later shot down.
-
Air Force- Wartime movie starring John Garfield. Story of the fictional B17C Mary Ann. Great film of early B17s. You've gotta suspend your disbelief as they fly into the Pearl Harbor attack, then head for the Phillipines via Wake Island. The Mary Ann has to belly in but somehow the crew builds her back to life and off she goes to spot a Japanese task force and call for help.
Angels One-Five- 1950s movie about a fictional RAF squadron during the B of B. They managed to scrape together 5 Hurricanes for the flying scenes. Good old Sceptic.....
Some of the carrier films are good too. "Fighting Lady" "Bridges at Toko Ri"
Battle Hymm-The story of Dean Hess in Korea flying F-51s.
The Hunters-F86s over Korea.

Interesting about Memphis Belle (The movie). I talked to some 91st BG vets and they hated it. Then I talked to a 301st BG vet tail gunner and he thought it was great. He'd been shot down in February 44 and ridden his 17 in, trapped in the tail and somehow survived.
The movie was no where near the real story as they pulled in all kinds of stuff from other incidents. The Belle was not shot up on it's last flight and only one crewman was ever wounded and he described it as a 'pin scratch'.
The War Lover with Steve McQueen and Robert Wagner is a decent B17 film along with 12 O'Clock High.
-
thanks guppy, me not being a war vet didnt notice the historical aspect, i just have good memories of watching it aged about 15 when i was bed ridden with a broken wrist, two broken elbows(skateboarding), snapped and pinned 5th metacarple (from a fight at school where i stupidly punched the dude on the forehead, he went down but i came off worse) and a nasty bit of difficulty when it came to whiping my arse on my own :)
i carried on skateboarding for 4 years anyhow.
i am rather ignorant of most of the films mentioned here, i must do some DVD hunting.
-
In no particular order (except as I think of 'em)...
Memphis Belle -- Yeah, it's fictionalized, but as far as a depiction of the bomber raids go?
Flyboys
Midway
Tora! Tora! Tora!
Airplane! of COURSE gets a mention!
Top Gun gets a mention just for its 1980s action cheesiness. Besides, forget Maverick. We all know Goose made that movie.
I can't believe no one's said this: Star Wars Episode IV -- I mean, c'mon, Lucas BASED the dogfights on the old WWII gun cam footage
Last Starfighter -- The Death Blossom reminds me of watching those spray dweebs who clamp their fingers on the trigger as they spiral to their deaths after I've shot their tail off. :D
Anyone who says Pearl Harbor needs to be shot into the sun. That movie was just plain (no joke intended) WRONG on about every technical and historical detail you could throw at it. If Jerry Bruckheimer (I love how Firefox's built-in spell checker recommends "Weisenheimer" as an alternate spelling, ROFL) didn't still have to finish Pirates 3 I'd recommend HIM to be shot into the sun along with the Flanneled One for frelling up the Prequels and Original Trilogy.

I'd have to say Memphis Bele, mainly because I saw it when I was six and it is the reason that I have always been interested in aviation.
It started childhood dreams of being a pilot and a fascination with the war.

Can't beat 12 O'Clock High for the feel of command.
Ever realize that the movie never left the ground, but they still got you to feel the tension and terror of the air war?
That's the difference between special effects, and effectiveness....

Has anybody besides us Arizonians ( it was fimed here. . .) ever seen "Cloud Dancer"?
It has the guy from Kung-Fu, (david or Kieth) Carradine as a stunt pilot. The plot is a little strange - something about he doesn't want to have kids 'cuz he's shootin' diseased bullets or soemthing, but the acrobatic scenes are great. If you like Pitts Specials and civilian aerobatic flying, you'll probably enjoy the flying sequences in this one.

i remember a film i saw a few years ago i havent seen it on tv for ages.
It was about b17s and there mission and the airfield had a spitfire pilot as co between for the english and americans who ended up doing some stunt flying in one of the b17s.

I think that is left to the interpretation of the viewer. He is described as being a triple ace and not named after him, he only stands out because of his honor in fighting. Doesn't really matter though, was still a good movie with great air combat scenes.
-
Too many movies to pick from...but probably my favorite scenes ever were the in-cockpit scenes from Flags of our Fathers. I've never seen or rather...heard...something so awesome.

Awwww.... at least break the options up by which war the movie comes from.
WWI: The Blue Max -- no question here: the planes, the fighting, and Ursula Andress scantily clad. A big thumbs up.
Zeppelin -- giant flying gasbag takes german super-secret mission (and british double agent) to Scotland and (most of the way) back. Much cooler giant flying gasbag here than you will ever see on ch 200.
WWII: 12 O'Clock High. -- the movie that makes me take up B-17s to Bishland. Note to HT: if you like this movie, how about giving us B-17 drivers some decent strats to bomb?
Flying Tigers: -- hey, Its JOHN WAYNE and P40s. Particularly like the suicide airliner/bomber ending with all the cans of nitroglycerine.
Air Force: another good B-17 movie. Particularly like the part where they add a "field mod" tailgun to a early model B-17.
Korea: Bridges of Toko-Ri - OK if you like William Holden.
Viet Nam: Flight of the Intruder -- where else can you see A-6s and have a black-italian mafia-connected squadron leader?
-
Battle Beyond the Stars
Battlestar Galactica

I "grew up" on 12 o'clock high (TV series). Movie was great as well.
Out of all the films mentioned I think The Bridges at Toko Ri stands alone in the sense that it captured the realities amazingly well (flight of the intruder also). The vast majority of combat flying is always moving mud, often more dangerous and always less glamerous. I've had a love affair with the F2H Banshee ever since I 1st read the book....the book is loosely based on a true story.....the events behind the movie (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0IAX/is_3_84/ai_108548248)
-
Flying Leather Necks is my favourite, Battle of Britain is second and Black Hawk down is third cause i like little birds :)
I don't beleive the Red Baron was the pilot in flyboys, put subtitles on during the bar scene when Rawlings says that he shot Wilfred down, it given the full name of the pilot and i think wilfred was the pilots last name. Pretty sure it wasn't the same name as the Red Baron's.
-
i really liked tuskagee airmen
but my all time favorite scene from any flick is from Empire of the sun!!!
the way the kid reacts to the p-51 raid on the pow camp is priceless!!
this scene can be seen on you tube
just type in "empire of the sun " and look for p-51 raid on pow camp.
the best!!!!
another scene shows the kid hugging what looks to be a zero
he,s not supposed to be there
japanese pilots come upon him hugging the plane
instead of turning him in
they all salute him!!
alot of great scenes in that movie.
but check out the p-51 raid under Empire of the sun on you tube!!!!
p-51 !!!! cadillac of the skies!!!!

Eagle, you've got some good ones in there.
How about, not my fav, but a pretty good movie, the one with Jimmy Stuart, June Allison, and Karl Malden? Was it "Strategic Air Command?"
hap
p.s. either 12:00 or the one with John Wayne as best. Wing and a Prayer ok too, but not in the same league, but some great scenes esp the one of the flight deck with the battle on the loud speakers. Pearl Harbor good too.

I remember seeing it in the theater and just those quick scenes had me salivating. :)
Heh, heh.
It reminded me of the time I was strafin' A23 in a F4U-1D in the Orange Areana when I got 12 check 6 calls....VonBraun, check your six!!, check your six...

Been trying to get the DVD but no luck so far.
Netflix says it will have it when it's released onto DVD, but doesn't know how long that will take.

Here are my favorites:

The Blue Max
And one no one yet has mentioned:
Porco Rosso

I haven't seen a bad aviation movie, except for any of the Iron Eagle series.
Best civilian aviation flick is Fandango! (http://www.mustardweb.org/issue1&2/fandango.htm) Funniest aerial scenes on film! Period.

644 Squadron...The Mossy Story
-
Air Force- Wartime movie starring John Garfield.
I just watched this two nights ago. Yes, campy, but as you say, great footage of early B-17's, and I really admired that they made it in 1943, and I admired some of their models/sets they made. Impressive for the time. I liked it.
Thanks for the suggestion. :aok

Yes "air force" is on top of a list of many fine old films, check out "a guy named joe" some great early 38 footage! John Garfield is always entertaining in any film but those films are from another time and place so you kind of have to look at it from a different perspective. Todays camp was hi drama back then. :D

So far, a lot of great hits (Battle of Britain, Flight of the Intruder) and some ridiculous misses (Iron Eagle, Top Gun) . . .
One yet to be mentioned:
I Wanted Wings – 1941
Awesome flying scenes. Filmed at Randolph AFB, Texas. Early B-17s.

Written by Bernie Lay, better known for his combat flying and writing of "12 O'Clock High"
The story is a bit of a stretch even for 1941. The old hidden girl in the bomb bay trick! :)
