http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/07/bill-banning-ipods-and-cellphones-on-new-york-city-streets-comin/
After two pedestrians have died while crossing the street and either using a cell phone or iPod, a legislator in New York is proposing that said devices be banned from public spaces like that.
Personally, this seems like another example of idiotic nanny-state legislation, but if the Aqua Teen Hunger Force thread that exposed the hidden dangers of light emitting diodes showed me anything, it's that panicky overreaction is not only ok, but if you DON'T do it, you're letting the terrorists win. Sixpence, BTW, I cede the floor to you.

Is that an example of the survival of the fittest?
Are they not smart enough to know that there are vehicles out there that can kill you while crossing a street?
The stupidity of people can't be legislated out.

However the Legislature will allow it In :)

Drivers should be paying attention as well as pedestrians, but I agree, survival of the fittest.

What gets me is that folks can get so excited about a couple of people getting killed while using iPods and cell phones, yet they turn their heads to the fact that millions of people die every year who are wearing shoes. If you look at the correlation between dying while wearing shoes it is frighteningly high. Look at pedestrian accidents alone: a little less than half of the pedestrian population of NYC uses iPods or cell phones; this has resulted in only two deaths. Over 95% of the pedestrian population of NYC wears shoes and this typically results in nearly 200 deaths a year.
Ban pedestrians from using iPods or cell phones? Ban pedestrians from wearing shoes first!

Damn John, you had me thinking I was wrong, the article states people crossing the street were hit wearing iPods.
