Start -> Run -> msconfig

Be careful what you're killing.  I don't think you can kill anything that will stop the cpu from actually booting but you might be taking out a few things you don't need.

If you do screw up and can't get it to boot to windows what you can do is go the command prompt at start up and type in regedit/restore. That will restore the last configuration that booted up ok. Windows stores the last five.

I use a program called " FSAUTOSTART'. It's a free download just for flight sim games. It allows you to go though a list of running programs and services to pick which ones to shut down. It will tell you which ones that are vital, and should be left running. The ones that I wasn't sure about, I just Googled them to see what they were and what they did.

First go to AH BBS Technical Support and read the Stickys by Skuzzy.

This should answer your questions.

Works for me.
