Wade is "old school Texas football" enough to please the masses and the media in Dallas. Plus, he's a defensive mastermind. Kinda reminds me of an old coach we used to have.

Wade Phillips, great coach, but if Jerry Jones is going to insist on playing GM, his hands will be tied.

what's great about the wade phillips deal is he has all the potential of being an excellent fall guy, prolly better than barry switzer. i heart the cowboys but they will never be a great team untill jerry stays in the sky box. he is an excellent business man and i am in no way discrediting his football knowledge.

Ok, i'll do that for you..his player evaluation sucks. If the guy had half a football brain he would spend big money on a quality GM like an  AJ Smith. Could you see the Cowboys with him picking talent and the money making skills of Jones? But Jerry's ego will never allow that to happen.

you make a solid statement but this seems to be the trend in football and it too is a flawed idea

jerry threw all kinds of money to get TO and vanderjagt we all saw how that turned out. then again we all knew what we were gonna get when we acquired that particular 'asset'. what makes you think that having a big money GM would do any better? it would just free up jerry's schedule to interfere even more. the main problem as i see it is, dallas football always comes with high expectations and none of those can be met with within 4-5 years like they have been trying to do.

its not that wade phillips isn't capable, but jerry should take a sojourn to tibet for about 10 years and let a head coach build a solid foundation. a lot of this years failures i think could also be credited to tuna's wanign passion. there were times when he was the emotional passsionate guy the cowboys needed and sometimes he wasn't, that can wreak havoc on any team.

It's killin me that the Chargers were raided of coaches as though they won the superbowl, but have yet to win a playoff game in the El-T era... sigh. Losing Cameron and Phillips is going to be tough.

I'm a bit worried for the 'Boys though. With Garret running the offense I really bought into the "offensive minded head coach" theories on the Radio. I thought Turner was a done deal, with the DC to be determined. I'd like to look back and see who Phillips had running the offenses in Buffalo and Denver. That could go a long way towards showing where they may be next year.

A big money GM wouldn't have brought in TO to begin with. If just spending all the money in the Salary cap was sufficient to make you a great GM, then there would be 32 great GMs out there. But there's more to it than that.

Look at AJ Smith as an example. He DOESN'T tend to bring in big ticket free-agents. His big off season signing was Marlon McCree.  Smith's focus has been on building through the draft, which is a long process. But how much did Bobby Carpenter contribute this season? My real point to any of this is just that Cap management and a cohesive team building philosophy are the requisits of a true General Manager, not simply pulling out the check book and singing checks until the Cap is spent. The Cowboys would have been better off if Jerry hadn't brought in either TO or Vanderjack. In a rare instance of agreeing with the Bowling Ball of Hate, I'd take MeShawn over TO every time.

I wonder if he has the star appeal to last with Jerry Jones...  Personally, I thinks it's a good hire...  But, I think that Jerry Jones is much like Wayne Huizenga in Miami: he wants the big name to put butts in the seats.

I hope Phillips is give a fair shake...
