Title: GV icons
Post by: AKDogg on February 09, 2007, 08:06:59 PM
Remove the Enemy GV name tages from planes as they alrdy are with gv to gv.  Gives the planes to much adv to kill GV's with icons.  U can't hide in trees or nothing away from planes.  I mean really,  why have planes see the gv's with ease and not the GV's see other GV's.  It should be same for both, no tags for GV to GV and plane to GV.

Hrm... considering the last time I was in a plane at 30,000 feet and it banked somewhere over Texas, and I was still able to see the motion of traffic (if not individual cars itself, still the motion), and the fact that I could see swimming pools in back yards clear as day at this altitude, and add to that the fact that soldiers on the ground saw miles-high plumes of dirt on Sicily before they could even HEAR the tanks, coupled with the fact they could hear them well before they could see them, add to that the fact that when there's a tank anywhere nearby it'll be visible in EVERY situation that doesn't include it being parked with the engine off inside a building and underneath a camo net.

Gee, guess what, if you hide in a barn the planes can't see your icon.

The rest seems about right. Icons need to stay.

Congratulations!  You just got virtually ***** Slapped!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBFn9Pkcj6A&eurl=

But yes,  I agree with Krusty.

Things are fine the way they are,  I can see where you're coming from.  But "If it ain't broke don't fix it".

Sure, take the GV Icons away.... just be sure to add thousands of troops to the front lines, running patrols, and manning LP-OP's with radios to call in your position to us.  Give them a few AT weapons too.  And land mines/mine fields.

We'll call it even.

Or we can keep it as it now, have have the icons (which can be very hard to see from the air if you know where to hide a GV)  simulate all that foot soldier activity on the battlefield.

My comment was not smart-arsed. My comment was quite to the point. I described just a handful of the many factors that show you why GVs would be visible at much much greater altitudes with just the naked eye. Heck in AH at least you can't see an icon til you're below 1500 feet! Imagine if we had real 20/20 eyesight modeled in this game!

Boots on the Ground anyone?

LP-OP -- Listening Posts / Observation Posts?

Scouts?  Patrols?  Reports from civilians and coastal watchers?

I don't like gv icons.......... I don't think they are necessary.

In AH I can see the black dot of a gv in the open long before I get close enough for his icon to appear...............  and if the reader looks at my DXdiag he/she will note that it is certainly not a high end spec.

Camouflaged gv's in cover were not easy to spot and whilst much may be visible from 30K, camouflaged stuff is not easy to see.......cars are not camouflaged and swimming pools are certainly not.

Since we can see the gv's without the assistance of Icons it begs the question as to why we need them................... well when gv's run for cover their icons follow them and as a pilot circles the area of cover the icon flashes on and off depending upon angle and line of sight.

This will equally happen when the gv has attempted to hide in a barn.

It is this aspect of Icons that I dislike the most..GV's under cover should not have icons declaring their presence.

I would agree that it would be neat if certain terrain tiles were considered dry and dusty such that when GV's traversed them they throw up an additional dust cloud...how this would be achieved without FR hits I am not sure......I doubt it has to be the 300ft high plumes that some pictures show.......... a slightly more voluminous version of the Turret fire graphic currently used may be sufficient.

Why we need icons on GVs...

Hrm...

Well, if you look down the street you can see the car parked 15 houses down (if you have a clear line of sight). You can probably tell the make, model, color, and what color the rims are on the wheels. At the SAME distance in AH it would be a blurry blob of 5 black pixels.

That is why we have icons. The human eye really is a wonderful thing, and no game, anywhere, ever, has come close to replicating what you see in the eye with simple on/off squares (pixels).

EDIT: Now, if they started making LCD monitors with pixels a fraction of the size they are now (and just a crap-load more pixles per screen!) then we'd get closer and closer, but we'd always be limited to tiny little squares gonig on and off. Like, say my 19" LCD, which tops out at 1280x1024, all of a sudden had 9x the resolution in the same dimensions. That would give me 3840x3072 (not a good 3:4 ratio, because 1280 isn't true 3:4) for the same size. That means I could run everything at much higher resolution and see much more detail, but I'd have problems with icon size, font size, and the size of things that use specific pixel measuremeants instead of ratios to display on screen.

EDIT2: 1280x1024 is about 1.3m pixels total. 3840x3072 is about 11.7m pixels. BIG difference. Now all I can do is hope and wish they advance in this area.

I am going with Tilt and Dogg on this one and I love to drop eggs on GV's.  THis would add to the challenge of it.  I can see the dot on the ground before the icon itself appears and I could care less what it is.  Flak, Pnzr, Tiger whatever... I will drop an egg on it.It sucks to be an M3 and run to a base and can't hide because of your icon.  Why not have them for GV to GV action then?  Having an Icon giving away your location takes away from the 'reality' in a sense of the game.  Yes this is just a game, but they should go away from the icons for GV's.  Plane vs. Plane is fine but it a plane it is needed, GV's is a different story.  And last time I looked at 30k down I couldn't tell if it was a Buick or a Chevy driving down the road, let alone looking 15 blocks down.... maybe with my binoculars.  Just my 2 cents...
