Title: Iron Gunsight Embellishments

What's your favorite way to embellish the iron sights on your guns?  Leave them as is?  Dab white paint or other colors on them?  

This is not about what TYPE of iron sights, just what colors you have on the back of the front sight on the tip of of the barrel and on the sides of the rear sight.  

Neither is this a question about any kind of telescopic or electronic sight.  Just the usual iron sights.  

I can't decide what works best for me.  I shoot mostly at paper targets in indoor range.  Black sights get lost in the bull's eye (okay, I know, should sit on top of sight picture), fluorescent orange can do same on orange bull's eye, bright green might be okay but might not do well outside.

Is there one color or trick that works best in ALL situations?  I can't find it.  Seems like whatever color, there's always a target somewhere with that same color.  I had a new Ruger .22 rifle with what I assume is the latest thinking: barrel tip sight fluorescent red and rear sight fluorescent green on each side.  A bit too much color for my taste.  

I'm inclined to either leave the sights black or dab them lightly with white paint.  The Ruger Security-Six I bought used had white, and it was okay.  After a factory refurbishment, Ruger put a new barrel on and left the front sight medium red (not bright), but so far I'm not liking that with the back sight flanking that in white.  

So what iron sight colors do you use on your guns, and why?

I like to add blue neon lights and a chain steering wheel.

Chain steering wheels are only in vogue for the terminally ghey.


I used to compete in IPSC with a red front site and white or yellow on the rear. The contrasting colors helped pick up the sight alignment in a hurry and showed up very well on black targets. If I were going to shoot with light colored targets like neutral cardboard silhouettes I used black on the sights.

On my BB guns I have a fluorescent green "tube" (whatever they are called) on one and red on the other.  They do ok.

Every time I would have to re-qualify for the state all we ever did was to put chalk on the front sight.  We where never issued permanent fire arms because they where assigned to the post.  Some posts had them, most did not.

Halo,  if you don't mind replacing the original sights try fiber optic sights like these (http://www.truglo.com/index.asp), I love them one the firearms that I currently have them on.  There are a few different manufacturers to cover many applications, just Google "fiber optic sights".

On my deer shotgun I use white out on the sights.

Bird barrels for that gun and my Trap/Skeet guns have HiViz Fiber Optic Sights.

I have this in green on my bird barrel to replace the stock 11-87 front bead:

Not so well.  If you are a true homeboy gang-banger, you must hold the gun sideways, at an awkward angle, and ABOVE your head, while popping off the rounds (while at the same time, cussin' and dissin' your target).  So, you can't really look down the sights for a good picture anyways.

But it do make a statement.
