What exactly happens in a disco? Every so often I will be flying around fat, dumb and happy then suddenly i get kicked to the desktop. I usually just start up AH again only to be in the main arena for a mere few seconds before AH locks up, my windows mouse cursor shows up and my system doesn't respond to anything but the power switch. Any ideas? I reinstalled win98SE lastnight due to other problems, and I am going to reinstall Direct X 8 right now. Help!

Sounds to me like your system is overheating. (A disco is "disconnected", meaning you lost your connection to the internet.)

hmm... my cpu is running at 51C and motherboard temp is at 29C. Will a disco throw you back to the desktop? or give an error message?
thanks
Ok, it threw me to the desktop today while in offline mode, so i know it's not a network issue now. I popped the case open after that, lets see if it helps.

What type of CPU is it? If that's an Athlon Tbird, that's warm, but shouldn't cause lockups. If it's a Pentium 3, that's probably too hot.
I wish I had some information about your particular system, but more often than not a CTD from a game followed by a system lockup usually indicates a few things. First (most often) the video card is overheating. Next would be insufficient power supply for the system. Last would be a driver issue, but since you just reloaded windows this becomes less likely.
My guess is the problems are heat related. The easiest way to test is to take the sides of the case off and get a fan to blow cool air into the system. If the lockups cease you know heat is part of the problem. If they don't stop, your powersupply could still be to blame. Most monitoring software can check the voltage levels coming off the power supply. Of particular interest in your case would be the 5V+ and 3.3V levels. If there are spikes or the levels are not within a few tenths of a volt I'd be concerned.

It seems you were right. It was a heat issue. I used to run my system with the side cover off all the time, for some reason I recently put it back on. I took it off again and everything is running normal. The cpu and mobo run at much lower temps now too. My system is an athlon (slot a) 500 oc'd to 800 with an asus geforce 2mx. It has run stable ever since I cracked that cpu case open with my dremel and oc'd it. :D maybe i put the cover back on to quiet the noise... hmm... oh well. thakns for all the info and help!
