Pulled up to the gas pump today, windows rolled down, listening to a favorite song that came on the classic rock station that I rarely get to hear. It wasn't bleeding ears loud by any means, and I usually leave the truck running. So I left the window down to listen while I was gassing up. No one around until an old guy pulled up to the opposite side. . . After he got out and started pumping, he starts up:
Old man: Kinda loud, isn't it? (with a scowl)
Me: What? (hehe)
Old man: The music?
Me: Eh, I like this song.
Old Man: Well you should turn it down, or off.
At this point I was about finished and was ignoring him while checking the tires. Well, above my blaring radio , I could still hear him complaining to somebody in the car and shaking his head lookin at me the whole time, so I finally said,
Me: What's the matter?
Old Man: You should turn your radio off.
Me: Well noone asked me politely to.
Old Man: You can't take a hint?
Me: No, but I do accept polite gestures in the forms of direct questions.
Old Man: Uh huh.
Me: It must be a generational thing. Hold on, I think I've got some Lawrence Welk in the back if you'd prefer.
Now I will admit, I was a bit of a smart-alec. But given his posture and demeanor, I knew from the start that I wouldn't give in to him.
I definitely know when to show respect, especially to elders, but he was just in a bitter mood.
I just hope that I retain as much youth as I can when I pass 60. 25 years to go.
-
I remember when I thought 35 was "old".
What song was it?
-
Oddly enough, Rush - 'The Spirit of Radio' - a great driving tune. :D

I'm the same way sometimes. The only time I'll listen to loud music will be in the car. I was listening to One of These Days (live version from Pulse, on a mix disc I made) by Pink Floyd. I was at a red light, when the outro started, the look on this woman's face next to me was one of fear. I gave her sh*iest eating grin I could muster and said "It beats Rap though don't it?"
I wonder if I should test the statement on the back of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars? "To be played at maximum volume." Might be an experiment soon.

I pulled up to the gas pump this morning.
Turned 44 Friday.
Some kid had Ozzy playing like it was something he discovered.
I asked him to turn it up.
Freeked him out.
-
There are few things I find as irritating as some jerk forcing me to listen to his music. I think it's a terribly rude and anti-social thing to do, expecting others to listen to your music.
It has nothing to do with old age... I've always felt that way.

I have to agree with eagl on this one. I have felt that way too as long as I can remember. Part of what irks me is the fact that my hearing doesn't always let me understand the words so it ends up being just noise.

When my daughters were growing up , every once in a while they would rush in with " Daddy, Daddy you just got to listen to this song I found. It`s awesome!"
One was by Jimi. :)
I have one neighbor who has nothing to do , so she spends her time seeing how much poo she can stir up. You will see her out on the street( I use the term street loosely) pacing up and , cell phone in hand , with them jaws in high gear.
I like to serenade her with Kid when I have the chance. :)
I make sure that the line "I`m your *@^%#@ +*&%$#@ h-e-r-o" is at proper volume. :rofl

I play it loud enough so as not to hear your complaints.

When I get that old I fully intend on annoying the hell out of all the youngsters with MY music at full blast :D

I would have to agree with debonair on this one... rush is not as bad as rap but it is a close thing. I woulda just fired up my car so that you couldn't hear that crap and I didn't have to. flowmasters from a big block is just the ticket to drown out that crap.

-
Wrong Mash....I turn mine OFF when I step out of the car....and I don't play it ground-shakingly loud with the windows rolled down while driving in public.
The way I see it....which you obviously don't....is that the people around me shouldn't be FORCED to listen to my music.
Practice a little consideration for others.

The only time i don't like it is when some kid is pounding some crappy rap from subwoofers all all you can hear is the damn thumping. Otherwise you can play Abba at a reasonable volume and I wouldn't care.

thats the point of the story I think...
with my window down or door open I can hear my music at the gas pump at a very moderate volume. I have the plain old factory stereo in my Buick, so it is not some bass thumping rap jungle-drum thing going boom.
my gas tank is on the passenger side of the car, and I take the time while the pump is going to empty any trash I have accumulated ao the door is open, and the music is never loud enough that it is "offensive" maybe 1/3 full on the dial.
-
Every form of music sounds terrible to many people. It’s rude to make others listen to yours.
You were rude and disrespectful.

Bingo! Let the whiners whine. I don't have mine "ground shaking loud" either Shuckins.

All the old guy had to say was
" excuse me sir, but would you be so kind as to turn down your music please while we are refuelling, it would be most appreciated"
kinda like when asking for supplies in a tiger with a blown turret or engine.
And i'm sure there would have been no problem.
Except that the last time the old guy tried that some kid told him to go f*** himself.
Or another possibility is you could have turned down your music when the old guy drove up, and not forced him to have to say anything.

There are a token few here that are just plain offended by anything. But questioning my character without actually being there is tough. So to have to go into more detail is a moot point, but...
Vertex was correct. The way this man acted and talked was anything but cordial. He didn't ask me to turn it down. Just expected that I would, and he could do the heroes dance or the I told you so.
The window was down, gas tank on driver side. It wasn't loud at all. It didn't have to be. I was right next to the window.
I think he was more offended by the choice of music. As are some of you. I don't care. So what. I think if I was playing something older like Creedence or Jimi or the Stones I would've got the same response. Or I think he was offended that I'm a long haired musician driving a nicer vehicle may have pinched a nerve too. Or he couldn't afford 'teh hi octane'. Or just found out he has to get a colostomy bag. Who knows. Some of you guys did miss the point. Respect comes to those that earn it. He didn't. IMO

I think they've done reports on those earbuds that are popular for MP3 players now, and they actually cause fairly substantial hearing loss do to the sound going directly into the early and not dispersing like regular headphones would. Teenagers...

There is this white kid down the block from me and every time he drives by I can hear his Damn rap coming from his car so loud it drowns out the radio in my room, now note that it's winter here and that my windows and doors are closed as well as his. This kid must not have a job because he is coming and going all day and all night. There needs to be a law that I can shoot anyone playing their radio that loud at 3 in the morning, I wouldn't shoot to kill as long as it wasn't rap.

I don't force my music on other people, I think it's rude. If I'm driving the vette and have it bumping, I even turn it down at red lights. Playing your music so that others must listen to it is selfish and rude.

Neither did you. Worse, you're trying to justify your own poor behavior and total lack of social decency by pointing fingers at other people and trying to say that anyone who thinks you're rude is some sort of token group of intolerant bigots.
You've earned something here alright, but it sure as hell isn't respect. You've proven that you have no sense of consideration for others and will make up excuses to justify your own poor behavior. That says a lot about you, demanding respect when by your actions (forcing others to listen to your music) you have made it very clear that you respect nobody.
It doesn't matter what kind of music it is. I know for a fact that no matter what kind of music I am listening to, some people will be irritated by it if I am playing it too loudly. So I turn down the volume or turn it off so others don't have to listen to whatever it is I'm listening to. This is basic common courtesy and is a basic social skill that apparently nobody ever taught you.
If you look around, you see that respectable people do not act as you did. They show more consideration for others from the beginning and regardless of how they're approached, when they're informed that they are negatively impacting others they correct their deviant behavior. You went the opposite way and are now standing up for your behavior. Way to go superstar.

I have to disagree to the point that he wasn't playing it "loudly" and the way the man reacted to him was just plain rude.
someone talks like that to me in public it doesn't matter what the circumstances I will ignore them.
I have had people come up to me out of doors while at a park or other place and tell me I must put that cigarette out, as it offends them. this has been people who have come over from 20 yards + away, and totally rude say "put that disgusting thing out" usually a woman in here 40's to 50's
I simplly say "no" and go on with my business.
I actually had one woman say "I TOLD YOU, PUT THAT OUT" yelling at me. this was at the state fair, in the middle of the parking lot. I said "so?" and she got furious, and huffed away. when I got back to my car at the end of the night there was a key mark along the drivers door. I don't know if it was her or not, but kind of a coincidence huh?
people who attempt to "force" their will on others in public places are wrong, no matter what the situation.
there is a thing called manners, and I think that is what the original point was by Black Sheep. he is by no means a child, if he is telling the truth about his age, he is 35. I myself am 33 (34 in 2 weeks) and know what good manners are in public places.
the smoking example I cited above is just an example of how some people have become in this world.
to make a giant generalization, I have noticed this mostly form "middle aged" baby boomers mostly in the 45-65 range. almost all of them I have encountered are hard core liberals. The kind of people I am talking about are the ones that make rude comments to a waitress if the butter given to them at Denny's is not the right temperature. These people care nothing about the rights or thoughts of another person, as everyone should do and live exactly as they say and think, regardless of the situation. they have no concept of politeness, and seem to never heard the phrase "you catch more flies with honey".
If I am doing something "offensive" to someone, and they politely ask me to not do it, I have no problem listening to them, and accommodating them how and if I can.
-
people who attempt to "force" their will on others in public places are wrong, no matter what the situation.
Like forcing others to listen to your music huh? Oh ya, that's what Black Sheep did and you didn't think it was rude... now there's a contradiction.
I have to disagree to the point that he wasn't playing it "loudly"
No, he said it wasn't.. "bleeding ears" loud.

Again, this shows how some have missed the point. This apparently struck a nerve with you however; and to the point that you've actually taken it personally, AND inserted what you think MY traits are into the equation. They are irrelevant to this situation. My stance was neither forward nor opposing as you suggest. It was neutral.
Thanks though. Your dialogue serves as a perfect example of this guys behavior to me. And also you lack of understanding what you read. Dolt.

Thats pretty much it Megadeth Dave! Yet I can tell that my tolerance for rude people wears thinner every day. My God, I am getting old!
Contrary to some, I do go out of my way on a daily basis to help others. But regardless of opinion here, at least it's a healthy conversation from both sides for a change :)

Black Sheep,
How have we missed the point? Just because we are not all rallying behind you and your point of view does not mean that we missed the point and have not viewed the situation for what it really was. You described the scenario and quoted what each of you said. I also know that what some people consider “not loud” can be nearly painful to others. I’d also say that you were the first to be rude. He had a right to be ticked at you. Just like if someone wearing a giant hat sits down in front of you in the movie theater; you shouldn’t even have to ask them to take it off. This old guy may have been the first to ask you to turn your radio down in awhile but I’d bet that many others have not said a thing. Many people know that anyone who can be so rude as to play their music loudly are also somewhat likely to turn violent when asked to do something as basic as turn down their music. Others may have wanted to say something but decided to play it safe. They also probably figured that anyone who is so cocky and rude to play their music loudly in public would also remain rude and cocky when asked to turn it down. I commend the old guy for even speaking up for his basic rights.
Tell me, if he were a younger and bigger and scarier looking, would you have turned it down or would you have allowed things to escalate into a fight? What if he was the same age and size?
Last week I took my wife and three little kids sledding. When we were getting out of the car there were four high school boys in the parking lot who were exuberant about their sledding experiences and were swearing in the process. I thought about asking them to not swear in the presence of small children. But I also figured that if they were rude enough and disrespectful enough to swear in the presence of three little girls they might also be the kind who would enjoy beating up a dad in front of his three little girls. We were the only ones there; I knew if things turned violent I wouldn’t stand a chance. Even though I had every right to expect them not to swear in front of my children, I didn’t say a thing. I’m not the kind to pick fights. Perhaps if a few other dads were there I would have said something though.
I don’t see your situation as being much different.
You can’t see past your own pride.
Unfortunately your pride has made you into a jerk.

Old Man: Kinda loud isn't it?
Me: What? (hehe)
^
This indicates to the casual reader that you considered the entire situation to be funny......as in "There's nothing you can do about it old dude!"
Stating that "I was being a bit of a smart alec" is the most honest statement you made in this entire discussion.
By the way, the music may have been louder than you think. Have you had your hearing checked lately? Lots of decibels in a confined space such as a car will cause significant hearing loss by the time you're thirty.
-
I think his whole point is that if the man had asked him politelyy to turn it down, he would have obliged and turned it down. Instead the man acted as tough the airspace around the gas pump was his and his only....for all BlackSheep knew the man would have been grateful to listen to that song and had he made his opinion known a little more politely then he might have got a different response.
-
sheep... I think we are getting to it now... you want to have long hair and play your music out there so that everyone has to hear it... LOOK AT ME... I'M SO DIFFERENT... I'M A MUSICIAN.
sheesh.. you want to get a reaction from people... seems you are begging for it. bet you have stickers on your car... in your face musican ones right?
No one cares about your long hair.. it just makes you look stupid... no one likes your music and they would rather you didn't force em to hear it and...
I bet I wouldn't like your stickers or the car they are on. That is the reaction you want... you are looking for that result and now you come here acting all shocked and rightious... If you didn't get this reaction once in a while, you are the type who would just turn it up and get a nose ring or neck tat.
You don't get it because you want to play the martyr or make some statement about anyone who isn't as with it as you think you are.
I bet your car sucks too. what is it?
lazs
-
Or he could have taken the hint, no matter how it was presented, shown some consideration for the elderly man, and his companion in the car who was evidently also annoyed by the volume, and turned it down.
Is his day gonna fall apart if he doesn't listen to his "music" while pumping gas?
I don't think you guys are getting it. The very act of playing loud music in a public place where others have no choice except to listen to it is RUDE. Your definition of "loud" may be different from that of a person whose hearing has not been damaged by years of heavy metal played at full volume.
This is such a problem that in many areas of the country there are lows regulating the size, power, and speaker size of music systems that can be installed in cars.
Sounds like he is part of the problem.

Most of us were taught to treat everyone with respect unless they do something to make themselves undeserving of respect. Generally respect is automatic among civilized people.
I bet you’ve bought into the idea that has many of today’s youth confused: respect = fear & threat.

Color me strange (I know many of you have) but when my brother-in-law lost most of his hearing at age 32 from constantly playing his music way to loud (this included walking around with head phones on, CRANKED up so loud you could easily feel the bass without wearing headphones) I invested in mutual funds that have a prime interest in medical companies that make hearing aids. Its doing very well considering that the baby boomers are all hitting deaf retirement, and the next generation is deaf 20 years before their baby-booming parents. :)

if noises emitted from your car that others hear is rude well then **** I guess I have every right to go up to any ricer I see and rudely yell at the for the fart can sounds they put out because it personally pisses me off and I hate that noise.
they ARE making that sound intentionally, AND FORCING me to listen to it. and I very very very much dislike that sound.
so basically you are telling me it is my right and I SHOULD go up to each and every one and demand they install a normal and quiet exhaust.
if they refuse I have every right to be a total **** to them, and be pissed off they didn't submit to my demands.

The only two people were there who said anything disagreed with whether or not the music was loud or not. One of them said it was too loud, why do you believe Black Sheep? Go back and read the description and dialog that Black Sheep posted; he was a total jerk about the whole thing.
It’s been stated by many that no one has the right to force everyone to listen to their music in public places. Only jerks choose to.
You quoted three of my questions, what you said doesn’t even make sense or tie into my questions.
Are you also the type who thinks that everyone needs to earn each other’s respect?

Black,
You brought the subject up, and appeared to be quite pleased with yourself.
Yet, it has backfired on you, because from your own accounts of the encounter, it appears to some on these boards that you were guilty of "arrogance of youth."
Ask yourself, "Is that indeed the case?"
And the next time a similar situation takes place, say something like the following: "Sorry sir, didn't mean to bother you. Sure, I'll turn it down."
It's easy, and far preferable for building good will.

Hey, exactly where does it say he was playing music "not loud"?
That's the second time you've tried to pass this off. I'm not going to allow you to change the story to suit your needs.

Well I by no means asked for validation of my actions here. I simply shared the event that took place. And i chalked it up to perhaps a generational gap. I figured it might rub some people wrong, but what do ya do? Hindsight, I probably would have pacified the man, had his responses been more cordial.

you seem t9o have not read my posts.
It is not about "loud" music" or any perception of loud, or anything to do with that.
It is about general politeness to an individual.
I never said anything about "gaining" or "earning" respect in the broad sence, it is about politeness.
if black sheep was "impolite"about playing his music, as what appears to be the general consensus here *(see note) then so be it. he was wrong. what gives the right of the "old man" to be an a** to him? because of the hair? the car? the imagined and assumed lifestyle?
I can think of and have witnessed a million situations similar to this about a selfish "old man" imposing his will on others regardless of the outcome. no matter what "social norm" black sheep supposedly violated, be it assumed, or imaginary, gives the right for someone to be a total jerk about it.
"reverse" the situation again, and and old liberal comes up playing NPR liberal talk radio, and I happen to hear it from his open window. can I walk up to him and say "kind of political isn't it?" ?
he smiles, and keeps his bush bashing playing, can I NOW get rude? (rhetorical, wasn't I just in my non-committal, blanket remark about what was playing, without actually stating my preference?)
I don't care if you are playing "yankee must die" by some redneck band while up in the new england area, you WILL hear something "offensive" or whatever may not suit your tastes, and if it not suitable to you, no matter what volume it is, it will be "too loud" for you. if you want it to not bother yourself anymore there are MANY ways to go about it, other than being a sarcastic salamander.
all my quotes before where trying to attempt and tell you that bold statement, but i guess you don't care about that. as you asked I will answer, it has nothing to do with "earning" respect, or anything similar, it has to do with general manners. fins, go ahead and say black sheep was doing something "without" manners, or whatever, do you still have to be an arrogant bellybutton about it to him?
guess the lowest common denominator is the rule in todays ameerika, and approved by the majority as it seems here.
*note: music is a great thing, and my goodness I can't believe so many are so opposed to music as a whole. I hate rap, and hate rush too, but music is music, and to say just even casually hearing it is a crime, then my God, BAN TEH MUSIC! it is amazing the senile talk radio viewpoints that are shown. LONG LIVE NPR!!1111

Skuuucruuu the old fart. :)
Let him roll his windows up and discuss what Bush has done to PO him off today.......or something. :)
Rude is a tree grinder running at 6:00 AM on Saturday morning just outside your window. (They left btw after I kindly explained the facts of life)
Rude is having to sit in a traffic jam for an hour because some morons just can`t keep from slamming on the brakes and rubber necking just because some cop has Jr pulled over on the shoulder and causes a total back up.
Rude is being forced to listen to 20 ear piercing car alarms going off in one parking lot because the morons using them hasn`t got enough to sense to know what button to hit............not to mention the fact that they are useless against pro car thieves.
Rude is that horrid sound a Suuuuuu Zoooooo Keeeeeee makes.
Rude is what I told the Yup couple sitting in a restaurant, next to my table, making all the comments about why the owners of the restaurant would let the couple wearing the MC club colors even enter the place. "Such trash" and other comments. I once again, kindly explained to the gold and diamond laden moron and his Mabilene queen that the "trash" owned the place. :)
Rude.......but sooooooooooo enjoyable.
If a little music playing is your biggest problem in today`s world, as far as noise goes, then your freakin deaf anyway, so it wouldn`t make any difference.
Get a grip people. :)

So every request should always be made with the most polite request possible regardless of what the person is doing?
Let’s suppose that a kid was playing rap music laden with swearing at a very loud volume and you’ve got a carload of small children. In that case if you want them to turn down their music you should have to ask them politely? Or, would you consider that the kid had already exceeded the limits of being respectful to others and would deserve a more critical tone?
-
black sheep... you are the one who brought up what you drive as being relevant You are the one who said that he was probly envious of your car that was "nicer" than his..
I call BS.. when I see someone like you there is really nothing about you that makes me envious. I can just snicker to myself... you have the long hair uniform...you call yourself a "musican" and you drive some crapbox and...
To top it off.... you listen to really crappy music..
Now, normally, none of this would get more than a snicker from me... but noooooo... you have to hop up and down and get all LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME... SOMEONE LOOK AT HOW COOL AND REBELIOUS I AM. on us... Again.. that would not be too bad but then...
you inflict rush on us.. why not just spit at the guy or blow smoke in his face?

lol black sheep, you have all the old men's panties in a bunch.
you'll have to excuse lazs, if it isn't abba it isn't worth listening to.
that's probably the same old guy that told the guy who pulled up on a harley "turn that loud motorcycle off *******!!"
And then when the guy told the old man to take a hike, the old man handed his bellybutton to him! haha!
-
six.. you are talking to the wrong guy... it is black sheep who is more likely the abba guy. Did you hear what he was listening to? those "musicans" are more my age than his.
my motorcycles and cars are all very loud. I think they sound great. I know there are some who don't... I shut em off when I am parked so as not to annoy people.
Polite should not be an age thing.
This guy seems to think people are envious of him.. I am just saying that he is a joke to me until... he gets impolite.

indeed. the entire problem really stems from the fact that many younger people have never had the benefit of a well administered bellybutton whipping.
this stems from the systematic take over of the public education by the hand wringing limp wristed bleeding heart liberals. allow me to direct you to one of my favorite quotes by the late Robert Heinlein "an armed society is a polite society, manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life".
extrapolate that concept to the not fatal but equally effective method of a good public thrashing to one such as our thread initiator and his bevy in the peanut gallery. such an action would provide these petulant and untried gen xers a valuable life lesson.

LOL, Storch is “calling out” Black Sheep.
Black Sheep,
The main point here is that you never developed a basic sense of common respect. If everyone had your attitude and behavior, the world would truly suck. You belong in a ghetto.

whatever dude - I'm from that area too - but keep it up - its great - You really are a 'tough guy' aren't ya? Karate Kid.

As an older guy .. I don't even bother goin over to the juke-box hero's.
Figure all their taste is in their mouth, and if they're stupid enough to play it loud enough so everyone knows they suck, .. they made their point.
Goin over an tellin them 'dood, you suck' would be redundant.
Askin 'em to turn it down is a waste of time.
I'd prolly end up shovin somethin through their speakers before they got the point, cause those types are purty dense, yanno?
Prolly right after the 'Lawrence Welk' comment.

exactly greyeagle.. we are laughing at the kid with his retro long hair and all in his little crapbox car with the radio on loud enough for us all to hear..... of all things... rush..
the guy is a joke. He is simply looking for a reaction... he wants the attention.. the older guy politely asked him it it wasn't a little loud and he magnified that into a who generational war thing... he wants it to be some kind of him against the world thing cause he is so cool and all... being the only man to ever wear his hair long and able to appreciate..... rush?
what a twit.
yeah right.. it was your long hair and "muscian" status and that really nice car that only someone as hip as you could have.

If you're idling that's one thing, if you're sitting there revving the motor(playing loudly) then you are rude.
Look, you are just a guy that loves to disagree, you are one of a few on this board who gets some kind of satisfaction just by being argumentative, regardless of the topic. If you can't see that BS's actions were selfish and inconsiderate, that just says to me that you are probably the same way and no amount of civil discourse is going to help you. That said, I'm done with you. Go on about your life being like BS if it pleases you. I only hope your comeuppance isn't too painful for you, beyond perhaps a few stitches and a trip to the ER.

I have yet to see a Harley owner NOT rev at a red light. I ignore em, and they stop. I even had one tool circle my Explorer in Myrtle Beach three times, like I was supposed to be impressed. Funnier yet, I'm laughing at him, and after third circle, he ended up getting a $1000 fine for loud pipes. Why was I laughing? The moron didn't see the lights flashing 50 feet away as he was finishing up writing up a handicapped parking violation. The Cop and I chatted for a bit while my wife was buying a bracelet at Barefoot Landing.

But your actions seems to show your lack of character well beyond what you may perceive mine to be.
You may well hit 100,000 posts before you actually offer something interesting to this board. I hope you grow up. And understand what you read before you incite and FLAME others. CHILDISH.

Again, the old guy came on with an attitude, and he gave one back. What you can't see is the people here are giving BS exactly what BS gave the old guy, an attitude for an attitude.

BS didn't "give one back" He started it with the loud muisic.
Until you see that the loud music was the first act, the inciting force, of the "rude exchange" you will not understand what ocurred.
Think about this, would the old guy have been likely say anything to BS if the music wasn't loud? Be intellectually honest. It's ok to consider others perspectives here. If you admit you are mistaken I am not going to stand up and say "Neener neener". Instead of trying to "win" consider what actually took place.
Again... none of the exchange would have taken place if BS hadn't been playing his music loudly. I'm guessing most of us like loud music... my fun car has 1600 Watts in its' two amps so it's not like I don't love the thump, I just don't feel it's appropriate to force my music on others.
I do not believe you are so obtuse that you do not recognize that the loud music set the event in motion. I believe you are smarter than that. I honestly believe that, at this point, you are arguing for argument's sake.. just to win. Remember, BS initially said not "ear bleeding loud". This was an admission that the music was at least somewhat loud to him. Think of what the old guy, considering he prefers a different kind of music, must have thought.
-
YOU assume it was too loud - what gives you the right to say? Cause he did? Too many people take it upon themselves to insert whatever THEY like in order to support thier stance. My original post has been mutated to fit the needs of the chosen few set on flaming for the sole purpose to flame.
What makes you believe that this man doesn't stir the pot wherever he goes, a bitter old man? By old - I'd say he was between 60-65. Who knows.
My hearing is perfect and he must've had some great hearing too -
If he were stone deaf, we wouldn't be arguing eh?
And by the way, it's a Bose stereo in my 2003 Pathfinder. You know what you can do with your Sparkomatics. And Lazs, my other car is a '05 TSX, and I'm in the process of renovating a '69 XKE - since you just HAD to know.
I never asked for bias in my favor ONCE, so you can let that go too.

Yes.
Why should we believe you? Because you are posting here?
For every old guy who goes around complaining about music being too loud when it’s really not, there are 20 jerks driving around with their music playing too loud; loud enough to annoy most folks.
When people are accused of doing something wrong they naturally underplay what they did and then belittle their accusers. Any parent would recognize this.
It’s certainly possible that your version of the story is realistic, but the smart money is on the old man. Even if the music wasn’t loud, you were still rude, sarcastic and disrespectful and should have turned it down.
-
...................it keeps going and going and going and going and going and going
-
black sheep.. I would not be envious of either of the cars you drive.. I wouldn't drive either of em.. the XKE would be nice but you don't drive it.
You were rude to inflict your music on others. Now you have taken an attitude about it and are shocked that everyone isn't on your side. You played music that offended people around you... you then went on to demonize the guy who didn't appreciate it with your assumptions that he didn't like your or was jealous of your long hair/musican status/pos car/ and....
How do you know if my posts are "worth anything" unless you are reading them... If you are and still think so... I would suggest that you stop doing so.
sixpence.. are you that dense? If you run straight pipes on a Harley (as I have done) and rev it at the stop light... you are doing it to get attention...just as black sheep was doing with his music whether he will admit it or not. Now that is fine... but if you want to be noticed then it is pretty lame to not take the good reactions with the bad...
If our musican style and car fashion maven had met a simpatico person... someone who had a mullet and thought pathfinders weren't the uglies cars every made.. and happened to like (of all things) rush... then all would have been well.. they coulda exchanged nods and winks and secret handshakes.
I at least knew that I was irritating people with my Harley or hot rods and admited that I wanted to be in their face... Now days...if I have to rev it then there is a problem... if someone says "do you have to do that?" or some such I would simply say.. "sorrry. know it's loud but I think a float is stuck and it will die if I don't rev it." or some such.... huge difference.
no one says you have to be polite in crowds... you don't have to hold doors open and you can spit on the street or curse if you want... You can play your irritating music at people.. You don't have to be polite. I think it's a good idea tho.
lazs
-
I think the point being missed here is that the volume of the music is not relevant. If it was playing softly and the older man was disturbed enough by it to say something, the polite thing to do would be to turn it down. What you did was not polite. It should not matter how nicely you were asked or how crotchety the old man was. He was bothered and it really would have been no sacrifice for you to help brighten his day a little. Think about that, and maybe when you grow up you can treat people with respect.
-
mt... most of us did not miss that point in the least. some pretended to tho.
lazs

indeed. rush at any volume level, including zero is offensive.

a city in florida passed a "noise ordinance", cops have DB meters, if your car music is too loud you get a ticket.
i hate it when ever new laws are passed, we have too many laws right now, we don't need any more.
but the law was passed because of people who don't know how to act in a civil manner, and must be controlled by more laws and rules like little childern.
turn down your damm radio, and shut off your engine when refueling, (read the sign on the pump).

Right, but he didn't pull into the old man's driveway. He pulled into a gas station. Let me tell ya, during the spring and summer when I pull in to get gas and i'm standing there filling the tank, all kinds of cars pull in with a loud radio. That's life at a gas station. And again, if a loud car radio bothers you, then the last job you should have is pumping gas or working at a car wash

Let me tell ya, during the spring and summer when I pull in to get gas and i'm standing there filling the tank, all kinds of cars pull in with a loud radio. That's life at a gas station. And again, if a loud car radio bothers you, then the last job you should have is pumping gas or working at a car wash
Umm the old guy wasn't working at the gas station.

and I usually leave the truck running. So I left the window down to listen while I was gassing up.
Not only do you leave the truck running while gassing, (which is a safety and environmental hazard by emitting tons of CO2 while ilding aimlessly and risking an explosion wiping out half a city block and causing even more environmental degradation) trucks aren't s'posed to be playing Rush, they need to be playing Hank.

^^^ You knew the Hank dropping had to start sometime.
Maybe if he had played Hank the old guy woulda bought him a beer instead.

The fact that we actually had a conversation without shouting, and that i could hear him talk to whomever else he was with, proves the music was low enough to be tolerated. Just FYI. But that wasn't why i posted in the first place. I posted to say I hope I can keep a cool and open mind in the future when it comes to younger people and thier lifestyles.
But I never once put myself in the right. Again, never asked for bias - I even called myself a smart alec about it - Rude? Perhaps - But none of you were there. I basically gave him the same attitude.
Moral: You can be a bitter old man and get away with being a tool til you die, but as an isolated incident, it's enough to brand me as the bad guy.
O' Club Logic.

The best reply I've ever heard was from across my caud sac... a retired Korean War Vet to his young punk neighbour blaring his music loud early in the morning from his lil pickup truck..
"Son can you please turn the music down, my wife is sick and needs her rest."
"Hey it's my music, my truck and it isn't too loud."
"Do I need to shove the truck up yer arse to get you to turn the music down?"
Music went down fast....

whiney suburbians.
A heart that's full up like a landfill,
a job that slowly kills you,
bruises that won't heal.
You look so tired-unhappy,
bring down the government,
they don't, they don't speak for us.
I'll take a quiet life,
a handshake of carbon monoxide,
with no alarms and no surprises,
no alarms and no surprises,
no alarms and no surprises,
Silent silent.
This is my final fit,
my final bellyache,
with no alarms and no surprises,
no alarms and no surprises,
no alarms and no surprises please.
Such a pretty house
and such a pretty garden.
No alarms and no surprises (get me outta here),
no alarms and no surprises (get me outta here),
no alarms and no surprises, please.

what I like is that having just met someone and.. only by getting into his face...
sheep boy is able to brand him a bitter old man for life.
I think it would be just as fair and more logical to brand sheep boy as a self centered, fad following, rude little twit with bad taste in music... lot's more evidence.

Yeah, from now on, whenever i'm at a gas station and someone pulls in with a loud radio, i'm going to get in their face and tell them how rude they are and turn down the radio. See where that gets me

six... if it really does bother you and you have the guts to point it out then you should.

Name another band that hasn't had a lineup change for over 30 years. It "they suck" as bad as some say, then why on earth have they sold 23 Gold albums, 4 Platinum (I believe 3 multi-plat's) records. IIRC, they are only behind the Beatles, Stones, Aerosmith and KISS for the most consecutive Gold or Platinum albums by a band in history.
Yeah, they suck, get over yourselves.

masher.. ok.. fame is a measure of greatness and talent.. how would you explain rap and paris hilton?
Its no big deal... you can be as rude as you want.. just don't come crying here like a little baby girl about how mean someone was to you when you were being so cool. How they are dumb to not "get" you.
Not everyone gets rush.. they seem embarassing to me. I would ask that I not have to listen to it. I have told people to "turn that crap off" when I was forced to listen to rap. I took my chances just as they did... they took the chance someone like me would get into their face and I took the chance they would try to kick my ass...
it all works out. don't matter who started it.
One rude thing I did lately... was on a slight incline at a stop light in my big block... it is a six speed stick so I was on the brake in neutral (long light). A woman pulled up behind me in a jap suv of some kind... you know.. the silver kind... and she got right on my bumper. I mean right on it. when the light changed I didn't move for a few seconds cause I had to figure a way to take my foot off the brake and let out the clutch and hit the gas all at the same time. she got on the horn... hard..
Ok.. so I just let the clutch out.. I coulda idled ahead a tad and then got off the brake and worked the gas but... didn't like her attitude. she even had a cell phone in her ear... probly was listening to rush....
I dumped the clutch while hitting the gas... both tires lit up in a spectacular way... I waited till the smoke got bad enough that I couldn't see her jap thingy... plus... I was getting a little out of shape.. and then motored away... very nice cloud of smoke back there... hope her windows were open..
Was I rude? sure. I admit it. I was not some avenger... I was just being petty but.. it was fun. You guys may or may not agree with what I did but I didn't have to do it... just as twit boy coulda just turned off his radio till he was done pumping gas.
course... people are just more rude these days... I think talking on a cell phone in public or in line or whatever is pretty rude... I am not interested in your boring conversation with someone miles away about nothing.

I'm not either, but some of you are sure "caring about your being right when Black Sheep was wrong."
If you truly "didn't care", you'd have ignored the thread. Come on lazs, I don't go out of my way to piss people off, but today's society has been getting more petty.
-
lazs,
The last time someone did that to me, I was in a beater station wagon with a trailer hitch, and darned if I didn't roll back just a little bit before the clutch engaged, as is typical with young drivers driving old beat up cars. Punched a hole straight through his bumper fascia. Oops.
I even explained to the driver how my neck was hurting from when he rear-ended me because he was too impatient. He didn't bother to leave his name so I guess he didn't think we had anything else to talk about.

masher... I don't care so much about the situation as the reaction and the whining by black sheep..
Both parties were rude... bs was first and the most defensive.. he coulda defused the whole thing but he didn't.
In the old days.. on construction sights.. there were music wars... everyone played their music loud enough to be heard... ended up that country and rock and whatever were all competing... was louder than the skil saws at some point...
what ended up was at most sites... radios and music were banned.
if bs likes rush so much... just get one of those ipod thingies and stick it in his ear and we could all look at his stupid ecstatic face instead of having to listen to such crap. We could still look at him and laugh but we wouldn't have to hear him.

Lazs,
I’d say that she started the rude cycle but she was probably too clueless to realize that she was too close. When people ride my bumper in traffic I slow down until they back off.

This kid must not have a job because he is coming and going all day and all night. There needs to be a law that I can shoot anyone playing their radio that loud at 3 in the morning, I wouldn't shoot to kill as long as it wasn't rap.
I know how you feel, mate.
There is a street near the city here which is popular with what we call 'sic rehs' (pronounced 'Sick Rays') which is just some lame ethnic stereotype that people who happen to have some distant mediterrainian ancestry seem to embrace whether or not they've actually seen the country they supposedly love more than the one they were born in.....
ANyway, part of this stereotype is to have a ridiculous japanese car (go figure) which is basically a turbo-powered stereo with 4 wheels.
These dicks then proceed to do 'laps' of this trendy street with their sub-woofers at full volume with their windows down and shirts off.
This got so bad here that the council introduced a $500 on-the-spot fine for 'indecent car-stereo noise' :lol
As you'd expect, the music is total ****... bunch of white, ethnic and asian knobs trying to be black.
As for the topic at hand. Give me Rush over 99% of the **** that's on the radio these days hands-down. Disposable pop nonsense and rap bullchit all day long. :noid

Fair enough lazs, good summarization and courtesy, see we're all better now.
FWIW, I miss my 96 F-150 it had a 302 and a manual trans, folks who rode my arse were probably shocked. If were driving, I'd downshift without warning, they'd slow up. If we're on a hill, you stop so I cannot see the top of your windshield, I'd let the clutch slide and roll back (one guys actually smoked the tires in reverse, noone was behind him).
The only problem with Ipods and earphones, is that they will get you a ticket.
