Call me crazy, but it looks like a Phalanx CIWS (is that what it's called?) on the back of that truck.

It's the land version of the Mk15 Phalanx CIWS. Nice call krusty :)

That other pic looks like the radar array used to detect the incoming threats.

Just a guess seeing as how the whole system is still classified ;)

The Phalanx would make a fine convoy defense.

Not against IEDs. I think it's a static mount being shipped to some place that will need defenses (like a base or important building). I don't think it would funciton off the back of a truck without the radar to guide it.

Its an odd sort of setup for point defense though considering the relativly short range of the 20mm cannon, about 1000M effective.   Would be cool to see a battery of these things firing at night though :aok

its an attempt to neutralize the mortor threat..
problem is it can turn the mortor into an airburst round if not killed before 30 meters of the compound.

Plus the action of the weapon system limits its usuage near civilian areas for obvious reasons.

I served aboard the USS Bigelow (DD942) from 1975-79 which was the test platform for the CIWS.  the unit was installed where the aft 3" AA battery was.  The system was tested by overflying the ship dragging a tow drone.  the drones were obliterated and before the gun system was shut down the radar was so effective that it could locate and target the towcable and hit it as well.  the radar tracks the projectiles as well as the target.  I comes as no surprise that it can track mortar rounds.

Here are some more with commentary by VWE:

standard up armored HUMV, this is the tank of HUMV's and can withstand a 155mm shell exploding 3 feet from it.

a Rino up armored bus. If you have to travel to another base that is within 20 miles or so this is your transportation. It will withstand up to an RPG and keep rolling.

The over exposure is due to the desposible camera I bought over here, I'm sure it got heat damage.

The second palace picture is where Uday and Kusay, Saddams sons, made their final stand. I think the exchange went something like this:

"Knock, knock... GO AWAY!    knock, knock...   i said GO AWAY!!      KNOCK, KNOCK!   WHAT?!? WHAT IS IT YOU WANT??  Tow missile! HA!  :D

Just water... had a couple 5 gallon cans on the back. No real damage done just scared the ba'geebee's outa the turret gunner. That's why you do alot of training before you leave so at the slightest inclination of a roll over the two back seaters reach up and pull the gunner inside. It was a good wakeup call and makes everyone stay focused on where they are at, what they are doing and what is around you.

Wow VWE.  I haven't been to Iraq since 1988 when I was stationed there with the UN.  They were still fighting when I got in theatre (Iran/Iraq 10 year war).

I was stationed at first in Baghdad, then to Qalat Saleh and Amarah.  Used to take our days off in Basra (BEAUTIFUL city).  Iranian snipers used to shoot at us when ever we drove up to the border at first for our first inspection.  Took a few 'correcting' negotiations to resolve future incidents - if you know what I mean.  But what I would give to go back when it settles down years from now.

I remember the Kurds, Shi'ites and Sunni's hated one another back then. Took Saddam and a a lot of secret police to keep one another apart. - but I tihnk that Saddam himself was Sunni (minority) and was pretty brutal on the Kurds and Shi'ites.  Take away the power void (sheithead Saddam), and presto - Shi'ites hatred comes full swing - and I really can't blame them.   Saddam killed thousands of Kurds and Shi'ites.  We also got to experience it first hand on what a brutal dictator he was - he used to play games all the time with the Canadian military. Take away our leased UN vehicles,  withhold/delay supply shipments, restrict our movement, disallow all photography, change our accomidations, videotape and record our crypto gear before it got off the plane, custom officials would rob us blind at the airport, lost mail, lost supplies, dipliomatic bags searched at the airport...guy was a real gem.

Too bad, Iraq is a BEAUTIFUL country.  They might have to break it up into religious states or provinces for it to exist peacefully.  The secular violence we're seeing now has been going on for um... around 6-700 years now. Perhaps a lot longer if you base it on the tribal family lines (thousands of years).   I used to drive all over Baghdad and down that highway/road of death back in the 80's - visiting neighbourhoods and villages, talking with elders and secular leaders.  I have some pretty beautiful picutres of the place - perhaps when I get time I'll post them.

Good luck over the VWE - keep ur head down mate!  Don't forget to take pictures of the landscape when you're out and about

Basra is not a happy place to be right now though the Brits have leased the same defensive gun I'm on and are using it to great effect several times a day. The sky was overcast this morning, first clouds I've seen in 4 months. The rainy season is just around the corner, when it rains here think "mudd bog racing" and you'll have a great visual picture of this place.
