Go tell the Spartans stranger passing by.
That here obedient to their laws we lie.
P.S. Do you think you could have done what those 300 did?
-
There are few today who have their level of physical conditioning and military training.
History has numerous examples of small bodies of highly trained men holding at bay vastly superior enemy forces.
At the Battle of Maldon in 991 A.D. three warriors, Wulfstan, Aefhere, and Maccus, successfully held a narrow coastal causeway against a Viking army of nearly 4000 men. They only retreated when ordered to do so by their lord, the Ealdorman Brythnoth.

rorke's drift
-
There was a somewhat larger technological disparity at the Drift than there was at Thermopylae.
That's not meant to take anything away from those at the Drift; still quite a stand there.... and they won the field, unlike the Spartans.
-
not to take away from the spartan victory because that is eactly what it was, a very successful delaying action that was extremely costly to the persians. one can safely speculate that the average persian foot soldier was thinking "these guys have how many more cousins?" the drift, I can't recall exactly but I believe it was somewhere on the order of 140 british conscripts surrounded by over 6000 angry zulus. these very few men absolutely wiped out masses of highly skilled, motivated and brave opponents. I believe eleven VCs were awarded in the aftermath of this battle in the anglo-zulu war.
-
At Thermopylae the Spartans were backed by 2000 other Greek warriors.
Those 2000 retreated after a traitor showed the Persians a secret pass through the mountains. The Spartans held the pass long enough for the other Greeks to avoid being encircled and wiped out.

Colour Sergeant Bourne: It's a miracle.
Lieutenant John Chard: If it's a miracle, Colour Sergeant, it's a short chamber Boxer Henry point 45 caliber miracle.
Colour Sergeant Bourne: And a bayonet, sir, with some guts behind.
Technology ruhls!

Holy Cow:
"Most of the film was shot at high speed, between 50 and 150fps. Normal film is at 24fps. "
Does this movie have a lot of slow-mo? What speed would they play it back at in the theater? Why 50 to 150 fps? I’m so confused!
-
Two possibilities, the trailers being shown on TV have quite a bit of slow-mo in them in them as mentioned but I think the other possibility may be Hi-Def. Hi-Def operates at 60FPS while film usually is limited to 24fps. That means that Hi-Def is capable of greater resolution than film actually is and the transfer to HD from film means you have to interpolate the data for those missing 36 frames, that's why many films transferred to HD don't look "hi-def". On the other hand, many really like the "film-like" look of true film so using actual film instead of electronic HD cameras may be the "artistic" goal. Mind you I'm just guessing here but it seems like a reasonable theory.
-
Could also be the fact that it's going to be available in IMAX. I plan to see this one if it's released here.
-
Sorry but this movie is no good, I mean where Keanu Reeves? or Tom Cruise? no Orlando Bloom? my god they didnt even get Johnny Depp? this would have been the perfect movie for Jack Black or maybe Bruce Willis. Leo is gonna be mad when he finds out they made the movie with out him...
Just waiting to see it. Also kinda want to see Ghostrider too :D

thats ok, when I first saw the trailer I thought it was an advert for a video game.
:lol
-
It's shot in the same sort of process as Sin City. This should be one of the bloodiest, most violent films ever made.
I can't wait!:D

Actually, there were more than just the 300 Spartans fighting in the Battle of Thermopylae. After the Greeks were betrayed, the Spartan king along with his 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians, held off the Persians until the remainder of the Greek forces were able to retreat to safety.

and don't forget that during the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!

Given that Alexander the Great's life is essentially a collection of myths and legends, the chronicle of Thermopylae (which occured a century before) is also subject to the same dilutory effect of time.
Also, Greek historians were orators, given to embellishment, exaggeration and pure fantasy - Herodotus' The Histories is a good example. Herodotus puts Xerxes' army at nearly three million men - and that is only the fighting men, not including support and logistics. Entertainment was as important as historical record.
Rorke's drift, on the other hand, is documented by modern historians with reliable sources. I think I'll put more credence in those accounts of bravery than those at Thermopylae.
I'll still go see it, I think. These kind of films are few and far between (probably because occasionally you end up with **** like Alexander or Troy).

That's the first thing I thought as well, it's also the number one thing that is driving me to see it.

Megadud, What's up? :D
-
been reading up on some folks who've had the privilege of seeing some of this movie before the full edit(complete movie)...
all say the same thing...AWESOME
most stayed to watch it a second time, this will not be a historical movie folks, do not expect it, but do expect alot of violence...
-
Whats with the non-human characters? Thats what made me think it was fictional....the wolve that has human characteristics, the elephants that are 10x bigger than normal, the people with extra appendages on their faces. Director of Sin City? Oh ok I get it now....I guess.
-
recall we are talking about the same culture that brought us the minotaur, pegasus, the kracken, daedalus and michael dukakis.
-
Eskimo...it was a typo...should have been 700 Lesbians!
....the short cropped hair and wearer of comfortable shoes variety.
-
The whole thing looks cheesy as hell.
-
I'm guessing that it is only me and my housemates who are dressing up as spartans too see this? One of my housemates is an undergraduate in classics, another in history. This was inevitable. My little bro is doing a BA in model making, i'm going to try and recruit his help to make/design my constume.:D

Based on the trailers you're only going to need a helmet, shield, sword and jockstrap.
