Somehow, the cheetah "betrayed her"

BRUSSELS, Belgium  —  An animal lover was mauled to death by cheetahs after entering their cage at a zoo in northern Belgium, authorities and zoo officials said Monday.

Karen Aerts, 37, of Antwerp, was found dead in the cage, Olmense Zoo spokesman Jan Libot said. Police said they ruled out any foul play.

Authorities believe Aerts, a regular visitor to the zoo, (not a trained zookeeper) hid in the park late Sunday until it closed and managed to find the keys to the cheetah cage.

"Karen loved animals. Unfortunately the cheetahs betrayed her trust," Libot said. (huh? :huh ) So I guess there's no law against trespassing and unlawful entry in Belgium?

One of the cats that killed Aerts was named Bongo, whom the woman had adopted under a special program. She paid for Bongo's food, Libot said.

Animal rights group GAIA called for the immediate closure of the zoo, located 55 miles northeast of Brussels, saying it was unsafe for both visitors and the cats.

Rudy Demotte, the Belgian minister responsible for animal welfare, sent a team to investigate.

How much are you willing to bet the cats will be put down for this, or given some other cruel fate for protecting themselves? Seems to me the lady earned this tragic end.

Im sure if she had the receipts for the food she had bought, the cheetah would have understood. Im sure he feels guilty today.

At least europes cheetahs still choose to defend themselves from crazed intruders who break into their homes in the middle of the night.

The upper half.

The lower half was probably more like trout.

The woman was slightly mentally deficient. AFAIK, the 'adoption' of a zoo animal was part of a program aimed at avoiding the social outcast of mentally deficient people.

It's a fact that she was able to gain easy access to the cage. Security needs to be improved within reason. However, its a sad accident.

Darwin award maybe, but I see better candidates on the road every day.

As a side note, GAIA (= belgian PETA) showed some sense and withdrew the demand of closure as soon as the whole story was known.
