Hey Guys -
My finance's father (now deceased) was in WWII, but he NEVER spoke about it to anyone so she knows very little about what he did. He told her once that he was a cook, and another time that he guarded German POW's, but did say one time that he saw such terrible stuff that he wouldn't/couldn't talk about it.
This past weekend, she was helping her mom with her will and found in the safety deposit box, a bunch of her fathers military records. Turns out he was a medic and was in the Battle of the Rhine. He was qualified as expert with a rifle and pistol, and apparently won a bunch of medals. I didn't see the documents so I don't know what was all in there.
I tried doing a search, but I must not be using the correct keywords. A while ago, there was a topic about a place you could go to get a persons military records/medals that were awarded during WWII. Can anyone help me find this site?
Thanks!

Is there any place to get a record for the navy?
-
Airscrew...
Thanks... A LOT sir. I've been trying to find out where to get the whole story of my grandfathers service. I have his medals, I know he was wounded and evac'd back to the states, but the rest is sketchy. I used to ask him a lot about his service when I was very young right up until my mom told me that every time I talked to him about it he had screaming nightmares. So the family as a whole really doesn't know where he went etc.. I've been trying from time to time to figure out how to fill this hole in our geneology and will be requesting his records soon.
sir... I owe you huge.

No problem,
back at ya Dichotomy.
Laser, those archived records I believe had info for all branches
Records of Duty Locations for Naval Intelligence Personnel, 1942-1945
theres more there you just have to dig a little. There are probably alot more sources out there, this just happened to be the first one I ran across the first time I looked back in November
this is a link from that same site

Online
The Navy is tough for WWII.
I've tried
Army Air Corps is much easier to find info on people and more detailed
Particularly the 8th
I managed to find out alot about my mother in laws brother who was a B-17 tailgunner who died during the war. From how many missions he was on to what the mission was when his plane went down. Right down to his burial site in Holland she didnt even know he had.
No idea about the Army.
but given the sheer number f soldiers who served I'd bet thats even harder to get specific details on specific units let alone people.

a lot of stuff was lost when the Federal Record Depository burned up in the 70's

Yeah, alot of WWII and Korean war vets really had their VA treatments screwed because of the loss of records in St Louis due to fire. As far as I know it only affected those in the Army, but I could be wrong. If the records you want were there, they weren't duplicated anywhere else and they are simply gone.

The loss of records have become a sort of tradition, unfortunately, that St. Louis seems to be keeping to with more modern day servicemen, ever since the fire.
(A few years back, there was a sci fi movie about scientists accidentally losing control of a "man-made black hole", story based in St Louis. Most of us with Army backgrounds figured the author was prior Army and had first hand experience with the phenomenon.)
