What with the spit 16 being such a popular plane, why is the frank so negelcted? i dont know if the info on DokGonzo's page is still accurate, but it looks like the the 84 has all the abilities of the spixteen with exception to climb rate. i've been flying the 84 regularly this month, and although i am no ace i have had moderate to good success with it in the MA's.
so why is it by and large a hanger queen? because of its poor dive? if some of the more knowledgable could weigh in i would appreciate it. maybe there is some fatal weakness that i am not seeing?
-
It does get a bit underpowered at medium and high altitudes. A Spitfire only gets better up high.
-
my biggest problem w/ it is constant pilot wounds other than that i love
-
Spit 16 is easier to handle, dives much better. But one of the main reasons why it is so popular: because it IS popular. Everybody who is interested in WWII aviation has heard about the Spitfire. Only quite few people did know about the Frank before joining this game. And new people tend to fly what all others are flying, too. They see a lot of Spits and think "wow, that MUST be a good plane"

It takes 5 minutes to learn the Ki84.
It takes 0 minutes to learn the Spit.
Guess which one most newbies want?
-
agreed krusty but one would reason that people might try and broaden thier horizons a bit.

and the Ki61 is better than both. But Krusty, you are correct.

Nah, Ki 61 is a Japanese P-40, no one likes P-40s;)

Shhhhhhhh!!!!!! Quiet!!!!!
(http://www.thesmilies.com/smilies/sign0176.gif) (http://www.thesmilies.com)
Ki-84 ENY = 15
Spit XVI ENY = 5
Spixteen kills Ki-84 = earns 0.3 points
Ki-84 kills Spixteen = earns 3 points.
1.25 modifier to each if you land the kill.
I'm not a great fighter pilot by any means, but I've got decent scores in general from avoiding anything with ENY under 10 (110G), and usually with ENY's of 15 to 35, most of the time.
JimBeam has a point, lack of pilot protecting armor is the biggest drawback, IMHO. Pilot wounds take me out more than anything.
Like the Ki-61 too. Oddly, the Ki-61 is a decent GV killer with it's bombs and slow firing cannon, if you want speed on the deck. Hard to compete with Ki-61 in LW with splixteens and lalas everywhere, but there are a few that manage. And it's ENY of 25 helps to make it a perk-o-lator ride.

Ki 84 does have armor but it's too light vs the allied ones.

I feel sorry for Ki-61s. They're too underpowered to be competitive. They can't compete with any of the main fighters for speed, and there's not a whole lot they can compete with for maneuverability, either. Something like a Spitfire will eat the thing for breakfast, without salt.
Of course, as with its close contemporaries the Me-109E and P-40, in the right hands they can give you a surprise. But I still feel sorry for the guy flying it (except when it's Bossk, then I'm amazed at how he does it).

J, the reason people tend to shy away from the Frank is because newbies never see anyone fly one so they think its a horrible plane. While they see 100's of people fly the spit16 so think its an awsome plane.
Also, the trainers (any myself) generally lean people towards the spit8 and spit16 as the plane to use because it is very easy to fly and get used to.
I find it to be the second most adaptable plane in the game, Great speed, Great climb, Above average guns, Great turning capabilities, rather horrible dive (450 compress). While the spit8 has all of this minus the 450 compress thus making it the #1 plane in my eyes. But as some of you know, I refuse to fly spits, 51's, la7's, and nik's.
Happy flying hope to kill you soon :aok

1.People fly the Spit 16 because it's Sexy
2. and it's easy....
Conclusion: If it's sexy and it's easy it must be a slut
....... everyone likes a slut ;)

Jeez Krusty can i quote you on that.... for an irate clown you sure are intelligent. :D

The P-51? The P-51's the second hardest ship to fly in the game, I'd say.

I'm only irate some of the time! Honest!
Heh, feel free to quote away! Chances are it's the only good one I've got in me.

Krusty on math. What if there are only 10 folks on? 4 on one team and 2 on each other team?
That one ranks up there with Gunman26's 26+26=42 remark.
i wonder if Vulcan still has that screenshot

The 84 is a pretty cool plane, however, like others have said, the lack of armor and the spitball construction make it a risky proposition in a furball. It turns like mad, awesome low-speed handling and decent low-alt acce, but all it takes is one zoomer and a couple of .50 cal hits to take you out.
Also the ailerons rip off pretty easy in dives.

Well I typed mine at 1:30 AM or so, and was falling asleep at the keyboard. What's Gunman's excuse? :D
EDIT:

Actually it's quite a sturdy plane. I've taken lots of damage (multiple hits) in many sorties and made it out alive. It's probably stronger than spitfires for soaking up damage.

But Ki 84 sheds ailerons and elevators 450 mph. The controls will lock but it should not shed! I wonder if there's a report about 84's shedding like that @ 450mph.

Well, in my case, if I'm going to fly a Pony these days, I'll choose a ENY 20 Pony-B over an ENY 8 Pony-D. 4 - .50's are enough.
Most of the planes I usually fly are ENY 15 or more, if if under that, is usually part of a mission.

51 is a bnz plane....with 400 mph flaps.... but theres something about it I don't like. And I wouldn't fly it anyways becasue its got.....bad accel, bad climb, bad turn (even with flaps!), average guns, great dive, great speed.

Possibly
Lock up might be aero only. IE you can move the control surface but to no effect because of air flow.
So once you stick that surface far enough out in that slipstream to grab. POP off it comes.
Not sure of this just putting it out there.

Basic stupidity.
His callsign was Gunman26 and he was probably one of the more vocal idiots this game has seen. I don't recall if he was banned or left but soon there was a Gunman42 flying around in the MA. When someone asked him if he was Gunman26, the guy responded with Gunman26+26= Gunman42. When his math error was pointed out to him, he started to insult the other guy's education because the other guy had pointed out that 26+26=52 not 42.

Great! I'm always up for a few friendly duels. I'll try to host Blue Sky tomorrow perhaps eight hours before the time of this post tomorrow.

If you're fighting in his arena note that Wind is on.

Keep in mind that flying habits also affect what is the best fighter for somebody.
Spitfires are my favorite aircraft, but for me the F4Us and Ki-84 are much easier to use. Luckily I like the Ki-84 too.
As to durability, so far as I can tell it is more durable than any Spitfire in AH. The only real shortcomings it has is high speed handling, which isn't that bad, and gun ballistics. I can do things in the Ki-84 that I cannot in the Spitfire and I feel like I have the advantage on any Spitfire in AH at normal combat altitudes. Don't fight a Mk IX or Mk XIV at 25,000ft though, that would be dumb.
Contrary to what Benny Moore said, the Ki-84 handles anltitude gains about the same as the Mk XVI. The Mk XVI's clipped wings and Merlin 266 cause it to lose effectiveness over 15,000ft as well.
I have never shed the control surfaces on the Ki-84 due to overspeeding either. Just watch your speed and be willing to let things go if you have too, which isn't very often. Usually all that dive does is blow their E and place me above them. Now the Mossie, that is a control surface shedder.
Basically, there is nothing in AH that I feel completely outmatched by when I am flying a Ki-84. I cannot say the same of the Spitfires.

Huh? Not even close.
The 51's relatively easy to fly and get kills in if you keep it in it's envelope. I find the 51D and the P47-D40 have a similar feel with the edge going to the 51D (even though I do better in the P47).
Now the LA5FN on the other hand...
