Title: Anything to make a buck
Post by: Airscrew on February 19, 2007, 02:42:09 PM
Ok, last year I had to take my 02 Nissan Quest to the dealer for some warrenty work to replace a CV boot.  I gave them my email address during the registration, so periodically I get notices from them on sales, specials, regular maintenance stuff even though I dont use them for anything.

well you gotta give those car dealers some credit for trying,  and the sad part is most people will fall for it too...

this is just an example of what I normally get, got this today

This winter has wreaked havoc on just about every vehicle out there, including your Quest. The road has probably not been nice to the comfort and drive of it. Also, because the beginning of the year is usually the busiest, you probably haven't had time to bring it in for service. Well, next month brings Spring Break and that makes for the perfect time to bring in your Quest. That is why we'd like to invite you down now to take advantage of our Pothole Service Special!*

Pothole Service Special
Tire Rotation
Tire Alignment
Balance Tires
Check Pressure
ONLY $109.99!!

what a laugh :lol .   Tire rotation, Balance and pressure check I get for free from the tire shop I bought my tires  :lol   and I can get an alignment for $79 or less.    I wonder how many people they suck in with that one...

They should have offered to swap out the muffler bearing too, for free!

I bet they get a lot.  So many folks think the slightest bumps will ruin their cars/trucks.  The things people slow down for baffles me.  I think that most folks have no idea how effective suspensions are.  It kills me to see pick-ups and SUVs slow down to 10mph for a single little bump or pot hole.  They’ve probably never driven on dirt roads, ever.

They "want POTHOLES"?!!!   Come on up here to Michigan.   Worst roads by far in the US.   Last year on I-75, a pot hole swallowed an entire and caused a four car accident.

I bet they are bad, but I bet Alaskan roads are worse.  When my mother moved to Anchorage there was only one paved road in the entire city.  Most of Alaska has bad frost heaves and potholes everywhere in the spring.  I broke a differential on a big pot hole in downtown Anchorage once.  The short summers leave little time to fix everything.  Brand new roads are often shot after only one year.

Mash, you'll get no arguement from me. I used to go to Detroit 4-5 times a year. NOBODY has worse roads than Michigan.

:rofl :rofl   I only laugh because our roads suck.   I empathize with other's in the same boat.   I laugh at folks here with 20-22" wheels.

Not even Louisianna?  I've never been to Michigan, but Louisianna roads are so bad that if you're asleep in the car and cross stateline from Texas to Louisianna, you will know it

Yep, even worse than Louisiana. Michigan has a stupid weight limit law. Trucks can gross 164,000 pounds if they have enough axles.

Of course most folks don’t even consider Alaska in these types of things, some don’t even know it’s a state.

I was told that when you hit a pothole the front tire could blow out some time later, therefore you should have them rotated to the rear and the rear rotated to the front every 6 months.

I thought for a minute when the tire man told me that, then asked him why would I waste the time since both tires hit the same pothole so the rear tire could blow out as easily as the front tire. He had no comment

One thing about Alaska driving though, it may the second best state for navigation because there are so few major roads.  From Anchorage, you can go North or South.  I even remember when the first clover leaf was installed. Most Alaskans have a map in their head of the major roads because there are less real intersections than a typical small town.  Lots of mountains rivers lakes and the ocean also make it easy to figure out where you are at.

The best state for navigation (IMO)?  Hawaii.

I call BS on a couple of those lists:

Quote
WORST ROADS
1. Arkansas
2. Louisiana
3. Michigan
4. Pennsylvania
5. Illinois

What about Ohio??? It has to be in the top 5. I remember watching my ice chest perform a picture perfect Triple Lindy and land back on the doghouse while driving from Cleveland to Youngstown.

WORST REST STOPS
1. Texas
2. New Jersey
3. California
4. Ohio
5. Arkansas

BEST REST STOPS
1. Florida
2. Georgia
3. Texas
4. Indiana
5. Ohio

How can Texas and Ohio be on both lists?? Texas is also listed as having the best AND worst truckstops. Granted it has been almost 17 years since I ran cross country and things may have changed a lot. But, as a rule of thumb, the further north and east you went, the worse it got.

$70-80 is a good price for a 4 wheel alignment, the computer alignment machines are very expensive.  Half of the techs time is spent setting up the machine to your car, if the car only needs minor adjustment it's good but sometimes things are really bent and take a lot of adjusting, might even have to replace bent parts.  Then it's gets expensive.

ASE master tech. retired.

my quote of $70 was for a two wheel alignment, actually was closer to $60.  I think the 4 wheel alignment was $130ish?  dont remember its been a few months.  but thats a lifetime alignment (for the 4 wheel alignment)  bring it back anytime and they realign it.

I used to align my old VWs myself; I did a pretty good job too.  I recently had the steering rack replaced on my Volvo; my mechanic told me to have it aligned.  I wondered why he didn’t do it himself.  That weekend I jacked it up and undid the boot.  Quite puzzled, I stared at everything for a minute and then determined that I didn’t know what the heck I was doing and I’d better not mess with it.  I think I called about 10 alignment shops before I found one equipped to touch it.  I guess things have changed a bit since the bug was designed in 1936.

I beg to differ with the worst road part of this list, ANYBODY who has ever been in Va Beach can tell where to drive and where not to drive, we have this two little fairy's here, the pothole fairy, and the bump fairy, first one makes a hole, then the other turns it into a big ugly uneven bump, thats on the good roads. Manhole covers range anywhere from level with the road, to a bottomless pit of tread death. Then to top it all off, imagine if you can a pavement road being built on beach sand 75 years ago with no money at all to make improvements in the future, 75 years later some poor  person on their way to work is driving down said road bouncing all over both lanes trying to keep control at 25 miles an hour in a 45 mph zone. dodging the oncoming traffic, thats. Don't even get me started on the 100 year old tunnels here that some semi trucks can not go through without getting stuck. and last but certainly not the least, when they cut holes for pipes and other stuff, and say its been repaired, here's what they do, the dump dirt in the hole and pave it over, why bother smoothening it out right? After a while that small 300 foot patch in the road is a maze of small mountains that Osama Bin Laden could hide in forever, with medium valleys that a aircraft carrier could get lost in.

Come to Va Beach and drive a while, then get your $109 alignment, along with the $500 worth of front end parts that are now broken.

A little bitter? Me?............................. .........................Uh HUh

If driveways are any indication of how bad roads can be check out this old video; this is from the last place I lived in Alaska (we had snow in our driveway 9 months out of the year).

Any thing else for Oklahoma besides Weakest On Truck Inspections?

I'd have to say that Oklahoma probably has the worst bridges in America. There all crumbling away, but they have been fixing them for the past few years. We probably have the best Dams though.
