I recently came across this info, and sure enough, my brand new dual core PC was not properly set up in WinXP to recognize and make full use of my processor.
Here is a link to tell you how to check, and fix if necessary.
This is only for those with dual core processors, single core users don't need to bother.

It will guide you through, and the usual cautions apply. In my case it made a very noticeable difference, but YMMV.

Well the AMDs dual core optimizer gave me some problems so I uninstalled it and instead installed the Win patch and it seems to work allright (dunno actually, maybe it would work the same way without it?).
The DC optimizer caused the AH to crash randomly if I alt tabbed to desktop when the game was running.
