Title: Box temps
Post by: scb on February 21, 2007, 08:20:42 PM
Just wondering what I should look out for in regards to temps of cpu and hdd..

While playing:

CPU:  29c
HDD: 23c
Unattached thermo in middle of case: 26c

What is the threshold that I should consider more cooling?

It depends on the CPU and maybe other factors, such as case fans and design etc.  For mine (AMD 4000+) the alarm is set if the temp goes above 50C, but it never gets above 40 in Aces High. Normally, it runs at 28C. Your numbers look REALLY safe to me... it's a cool system hehe.

There should be some documentation which came with your rig on this, or you could find out on the web.

My OLD celeron had a max temp of 90c... Cant remeber what my current ones run at

But If your getting this While playing:

CPU: 29c
HDD: 23c
Unattached thermo in middle of case: 26c

I personally would be VERY happy to be getting 29c while playing....

54-60c is the hot area for AMD's and 65-70c is starting to push it on pents .

my cpu runs at 36-39c but its OCed  hard and on water .

your running pretty darn cool.

CPU is an amd5600+ venice core or something
hdd is a wd raptor 100gb

and just wondering... is it better to set frames at 60 or let them fly?

If I don't let em fly I get mini screen freezes. My system gets 60 to 100 FPs (limited only by refresh rate). Let em go and see what happens.

Max temp for an amd Athlon 64/X2 5600+ (Winston Core) is 55°-70°C

A test on a raptor 150GB had it averaging at 38°C with the peak being 41°C without degradation of performance. I can't find a "peak temp" for your drive, but that should give you a baseline to work with.

I'm going to assume that your 26°C ambient temp in the case is caused by your video card, which you haven't posted temps on yet.

Don't start worring about anything until you hit the 35°-40°C range, and even then to wonder if maybe another fan is do-able or not. Start freaking when ALL of your temps are at 45°-50°C

All in all, you're running an extremely cool system without need for more cooling. More cooling = more wattage.
