Because I'd wondered about intertia of engines and booms, etc, in rolling the P-38 I hazarded an email to Steve Hinton of Planes of Fame at Chino about his thoughts on P-38 rolls.
The early P-38 had manual ailerons so they are heavy and the roll rate is less then a P-51, considerably. The upward aileron travels almost twice as far as the lowering one as well. The late J and all L models have aileron boosted by hydraulics as well as increased aileron deflection where both ailerons travel up and down the same. The early ones do not yaw very much when you crank full aileron for a roll. The later ones do a bit but the roll rate is soooo much better it is worth it. As for inertia, if you just let go of the wheel during a roll the Lightning will stop rolling quickly. You do not have to reverse the ailerons unless you are trying to make a crisp stop of the roll. The usual roll is to crank in aileron untill you roll to your desired spot then zero it out. The L model rolls better then almost any fighter at high speed. Hydraulic boost really made a fighter out of it. The early ones feel like an A-26, almost. I have flown the F, J and L. The L is by far the better feeling machine. You go fron having a sore "tennis elbow" after flying formation in the early ones to a relaxed, can do anything feeling flying the L model.

ahhh i was worried for a sec cause if people were gonna start whining about a crappy plane like the p38, i figured my jeep FM whine is over due.

Always interesting to hear these things.
Thx :)

Crappy plane?? Its one of the most capable planes in the game.

So, the conclusion seems to be that if it's not perfect in Aces High II, it's very close. Hurrah for Hitech! By the way, in the P-38 Roaring Glory warbird video, one of the rolls is filmed from inside the cockpit so that both the yoke and the horizon are visible.

I found the roll rate in my 38G to be quite good. It rolled quite a few times before coming to rest like this :)

It's crappy to him because he 1) always dies in it, 2) always gets shot down by one or 3) both 1 and 2.

Interesting, thanks, Old Sport. Sort of what I thought might be true, certainly not what's true in these airplane sims.

A couple of the guys I know who flew them said that if the early models hadn't had a yoke they'd have never been able to get a decent "flick roll" out of them at all, and even then the early models still rolled fairly slow, and the faster you went the slower they rolled because you couldn't roll the yoke over as easy. The later models had a little less feel, but rolled fairly fast, faster still if you stood on the rudder, and the faster you were going the faster a late model would roll. The boosted ailerons came about because pilots complained that it was near impossible to get a good "flick roll", and that was a serious problem in combat.

Old Sport,
That is a nice post, can you show the link where that came from? I would like to read the rest of it.

F4UDOA,
He implies it is a reply to an email query he sent in his post.

Yes, Karnak is correct. I just sent him an unsolicited email and figured if he wanted to answer he would and if not, well, C'est la vie.
Best Regards

I don't know. Take up an A-20 and then take up a P-38G; they aren't that different in rolling ability.

Old Sport,
Can I say that Steve Hinton must be a pretty nice guy. I have ask much less high profile people similar questions with less than positive results. Did he have any other annecdotes to share??
I would consider him one of the better references for Warbird flight characteristics.
