Just curious as to who uses pan (F7) views vs instant (F9) and why you prefer one over the other.
Thanks

I use Pan F7 mostly because although quick enough, it gives you a flash if there is something you missed as you pass through an adjacent view. It also helps to keep me oriented when switching between views in rapid succession. F9 tends to make me lose SA and physical orientation.

Same here. When I was still using hat views, F9 felt completely unnatural and was discomforting.

Ditto - I use Pan
Better SA and the Glimpse of an NME from view to view invaluable.

Fascinating. For years, I used snap view and always felt pan view moved too slow and would hurt my SA. Therfore I never tried it. However, since using TIR, I realize what you guys are saying (because TIR is a pan view of sorts) and if I were to know then what I know now, I would have probably used pan view.

There is an error on Max posting:
F7 is Snap View. F8 is Pan view. F9 is instant view.
I used F7 (Snap). I found F8 (Pan) almost impossible to use.

Yup F7

The INSTANT usually gives people problems. They lose their opponent while fighting and never can understand why. Then, when you tell them about F7, the see why and fight better.
Unless someone tells them about F7, they may be using F9 and will continue to have difficulties in keeping track of their opponent during a dogfight.
HT may want to review the F9 instant view mode.

I use snap view because the fields of view overlap anyway unless your zoomed in pretty far and I don't like to waste time getting my head turned.
I also just recently moved my zoom toggle to my stick which made a huge difference for me.

Man, I was totally confused when I posted this.
I meant to say that I always used Instant view (F9) and never liked Snap (F7) because it was too slow. Pan was totally useless to me (F8) and never used that at all. However, now that I have been using TIR this past year, I appreciate the little glimpse you get when you move to another view. I'm sure that's what all you guys are referring to. I should have given Snap view another chance. Oh well, water under the bridge now as TIR rules.

Typically I use the snap view, however I do have a button on my stick that enables (F8) Pan. I can hit that, then use my hat switch to pan my view around.
There are a few uses, none that couldnt be accomplished with just F7, but I still like how I have it set up, gives me more options.

The snap (f7) is IMO vastly better than either the pan (f8) or the Instant(f9)
Instant gives me a headache scanning the sky around my plane. F8 will cost you if you ever get jumped while panning around.
The exception to that is when I'm in F3 external view, I'll sometimes use use pan to get above my plane enough to see whats coming ahead.
I agree, we at the very least need a choice as to WHICH is the default.

Thanks gents :aok

Snap, man f7 is too slow in furballs;)
-
F9. much better SA.
-
I use a mixture. I use snap view but when tied up with a con I use padlock view that pans. I then use snap for SA and when done looking around it snaps right back to the con.

I understood this to be the F7 view or technically called "snap" which I use. It is a very fast panning between views.
F8 which is purely pan is not a normal view option for POV settings. It is far too slow and I do not use it except when in an external view in the tower or a gun emplacement.
I have tried F9 (Instant) and find it un-natural and unpleasant to use.
:( Can we delete the thread and start again this time with what I was sure Max meant as F7 or F9 !

i Use F7 too.
anyone ever find this happen to them when flying RAF rides...?

Here here! My head is spinning! I think I understand what most everyone really wants to say here even if they use the term "pan" when mean "snap", etc. :O

Everytime :lol

always used snap

I've always used F9 (instant). To me, F7 (snap) is just a slower transition to the same view. Maybe that creates nausea in some?
If I recall, I think instant was preferred because it was quicker. To me, if I lose track of the nme then making a view transition slower isn't going to help. That said, I'll try F7 and see if it makes a difference.

Yes, that was what I was referring to. No need to reiterate...I get the picture :D Sri for not being more clear about the question. :cry

Red of roundel looks like a bogey? YES
thought it was just me

Instant.
In the environments I tend to fly the snapview is too slow most of the time.
I didn't start using instant untill maybe a year ago though but can't go back to snap now.
