Title: Flags/Stripes/Insignia question
Post by: Krusty on February 23, 2007, 01:01:09 PM
I did some C205s a little while back with red/white/green striped flags on them. I don't know what you'd call these ("insignia?" "flags?" "stripes?").

Recently on the black huricane I noticed that there were red/white/blue stripes on the stablizer, and they were oriented front-to-back. I mentioned this on Toadflak's Hurr2c with a similar paint scheme.

Then I got to thinking.....

Are these "fin flashes" separate from national flag colors?

You see, on my C2s I did the colors from left-to-right (subjective to the side you were looking at) instead of front-to-back. I'm wondering if I got this right, or if they should be mirrored on each side (like fin flashes).

Does anybody know for sure what the rule on flags is?

For example I pulled one of the images from my Picture Hangar account:

EDIT: At some point during my C2 skin construction I made a change from mirrored to subjective. I don't recall why. I don't know if this is right. I just know the final submitted versions were subjective. I'd like to know if I should get ready to resubmit this if it's wrong.

Fin flashes 'generally' use the nations flags colors.

E.g. from front to rear, regardless of port or starboard

U.K. - Red/white/blue
France - Blue/white/red
Greece - Blue/white/blue

Some will use the actual nations flag, the trick is figuring out if it's the actual nations flag or a fin flash.

Fin flashes will always be mirrored between sides, flags won't.

Okay, I think that helps. It eases my mind a little. The markings on the C2s were definitely flags, not fin flashes, because they have these little triangle-cut borders on them.

Ratfink, go look at a hurricane. It's got red white and blue stripes on the vertical stab. That's a fin flash.

"Flash" as in "flash of colors" or something like that.
