Title: Turbo boost control
Post by: OLtos on February 24, 2007, 01:42:34 AM
I would like to see, (never thought I'd say this), a more realistic boost control system.

On aircraft that had mechanical super chargers,  all except the 190s which had automatic boost controls, you actually had to manually shift between the various stages of super charger as you changed altitude.

On aircraft that had turbo superchargers, (American Buffs, P-38s and P47s) you could control the amount of boost available with a control similar to a throttle.  I was at the National Air and Space Museum and I saw an interesting display.  It was the rebuilt P-38 that Dick Bong was flying at Wright Patterson which blew an engine while he was testing automatic engine boost controls.  It seems we never got that right.

Regarding the turbo supercharger boost control.  This could be an important change as I have heard interviews on "Wings" or something else on the military channel stating that the Allison engines on 38s did not overheat under 10 - 15k alt and that you could radically overboost  them without harm.  I have not heard that of the P-47s, but I imagine that big PW engine would be more robust than the allisons in the 38.  Oh,  the P-38 drivers who spoke of this were flying in the Med.  after the 8th Airforce sent their 38s there.  The topic was actually the contrast between how the P-38 handled at high altitude in cold tempratures vs. Low alt in Warm weather.

So I would like to see more "realistic" boost control for Aircraft.  Or, maybe not.  What a headache it would be.
