Often read the weapon debates and wonder why this piece of equipment never comes up?
It might not be "Sexy" etc but I can assure you it's probably the best you will ever use.
I used it all over the place in different terrains and never had a single issue with it.

Glad to hear a good report. Been looking at many pistols in the Sig line for a concealed carry weapon. 239 is tempting, as is 229.
Either .40 SW or .45acp would be a good choice.

Got one, and love it. Probably in my top 3 of all time favorite handguns of all time. It is finished in Nickle, and chambered in 9mm. The story goes that this particular 226 was manufactured in 1993 for the U.S. Army for some sort of special parade detail. Apparently they found a different weopen at a cheper price that they went with instead, so these were released for sale to the general public. Apperently very hard to find. Not sure how much truth there is to the story, but after I purchased the gun, the guy at the firearms dealership where I bought it called me at home just to let me know that I got a great deal, and why.

I had a 226 in my younger days (20+ years ago). easy to port around with you, reliable and accurate. I had to pawn it to make a car payment. I never bought another sig though, no fault with the weapon or the manufacturer. I replaced that pistol with an S&W model 411 because it was cheaper. the neat thing about the 411 is that no one can shoot with it accurately but I can because I shoot it lots. I occasionally shoot with some FBI guys and I laugh as they still try to hit with it and can't. my brother bought a P220 which is the reason I went out and bought my kimber. I think the next 9mm I'll get will be an H&K MP5. the reason I don't like the 226 is because the 9mm is an anaemic round, not that .40SW is too much better.

The 226 is a fine weapon. I don't have experience with a wide variety of handguns, but I've put over 5000 rounds through 226's for police training with no problems. In our academy we had the choice of glocks, sigs, S&W's, or berettas. We had a day at the range on each, and then could use whatever we wanted from there on out. 9 out of the 11 of us took sigs. Both of the top shooters in the academy (me being one ;) ) shot sigs. I was very happy when I was hired at a department that uses .40 226's. I can't say a single bad thing about them, once you're trained to instinctively use the decocking lever and get used to the DA/SA trigger.
I have a 239 .40 as a concealed/off duty weapon... again, can't say a bad thing about it.

We use it all the time in the SEALs.

226 is a great gun! For the price their are some other pistols i would look at but it comes down to what feels best in your hand. Shot a 226 the other day and my only complaint was the trigger. Don't let that discourage anybody because i compare all pistol triggers to my STI Edge..

SIg's are a great handgun. You cannot go wrong with one.
-
I'm seriously thinking about getting one for home defence etc, there's been a few breakins round here recently, thing is, I'm not sure if my wife would be able to operate it correctly and so might have to get something a bit more "dumbed down"

Remington 870 pump!

mossberg 500. better, stronger action. or the 590 also.

Were issured the 226 DK, had a straight 226 before that. Fine weapon, I would recomend it to anyone.
even the navy seals.....

I'm pretty sure he meant the baby seals not the navy seals.

Yup, even I have one :)

I don't really have any use for a 9mm but the sigs are very nice handguns.
They simply don't do anything any better than my Kimber single stack 45. If you are going to lug something as heavy as a sig or Kimber around then the kimber is hard to beat.
I have shot lots of semi autos that are good... I am not a real semi auto fan tho.. they throw away the brass and jam and have a very narrow power range and brass that is weak compared to say.. the 44 mag and larger revolver rounds.
If I must have a semi auto then I will have the Kimber in 45... tempting to get one in .357 sig.. HK, sig all fine guns but why bother? Might as well use the much simpler 1911 style Kimber. I also like 22 semi autos but haven't had one other than a conversion kit for my CZ 75 clone in years.

Every now and then you find a gun that fits you perfectly, is well balanced, reliable and one that you can really hit with, and work it effortlessly. For me, its the Sig P226 in .40. what more can I say...

Even If I get one, I'd probably have to do something like Storch recommmended and then I'm back to my main issue that concerns me above everything else, you put rounds into someone in the millitary- fine ( Sometimes, although the ROE's are normally poured over by various groups looking for something to get you with) But out here in the Civilian life- I dunno boys, If I go for it, they'll stay in the house and that way if I get a break in/home invasion I'm onto a no brainer and I'm in the clear so to speak.

luv my 226. easy to clean. depending on ammo, it starts ta jam around 300 rounds. great weapon. fits great in the small of the back.
just bought a glock 30 45cal as a secondary weapon. sweet.......spring lazer. had ta buy a diff mag that had a curved grip at the bottom but otherwise luv it. 9 yards out and it will punch through the same hole with ease. fatter than the larger sig but still hides good.
thinking of getting a glock 45.
was shown the distance where the sig slide is from the top of ur hand compared to the glock. glock slide is much closer to ur hand which i found out helps on reaquiring target after firing.
sig is a great choice though :)

i have a 229 chambered in 357sig for work, and a 239 in 9mm for outside of work carry. i like em both.

And being totally honest, I'm not even sure I could use it, sounds strange I know, but I just don't think I'd have it in me to actually use a weapon again. But I keep thinking of those break ins/home invasions that we suddenly got a rash of round our way and being married now etc I know I'd actually have to do something to protect myself and family.
Think I'll get down to the range and see how it goes from there, take my wife with me and then see how we both feel after that.

I'm 33 years and grew up in a house where Knives/Guns were NOT allowed (culinary cutlery is different). In 1997, a year before I was married, while working security, our new supervisor got me into paintball. It wasn't long until I was going to the range and firing his "pre-ban 226", Colt Govt. Model., and other weapons. He taught me everything I know today and instilled "a respect for handguns and rifles".
One day, I was talking to my Uncle who lives in Indiana, he wanted to get a USP Compact 45. He sold me his then 3 year old full size USP 45 for $500, including 3 factory mags. I have fired 3,500+ rounds through it with only one Failure-to-Fire. I bought some cheap ammo at the range, and there was a bad primer on a cartridge. I've fired Lead through my pistol, it chews it up and spits it out.
I used to rip on Glock's something fierce until my buddy purchased a Glock 23C for Concealed Carry. It is a dream to shoot. He loves shooting my 45, and we'll often switch on the range and I enjoy firing his Sig 226 or Glock 23. My USP is the only pistol I have, and I got some strange looks from my parents when they found out I bought it from my Uncle.
Owning a gun, isn't about "Cool, now I can keep loaded and ready to fire." It is something in which "Responsibility comes first." You will RARELY have an "open and shut case" if you need to fire the weapon. I have no idea of your "familiarity of firearms Hawco", so please don't think I am "talking down to you at all." Some people just fail to understand the big picture, and that you "are representing law abiding gun owners".
If a perp comes into your house while your wife and yourself are sleeping, it's a bit more complicated than "point and shoot". You need to figure out "is he in front of a window, and if so, will the caliber I have go through him AND the window?"
I still stand by my statement that you CANNOT go wrong with a Sig. Nor can you go wrong with an HK or Glock. They are all "dependable" firearms, me personally, I despise Beretta for all of their worth, same for Taurus Semi-Automatics (their revolvers are very good).
If your wife will be firing it, I personally recommend for you and your wife:
Glock 23 (not the C)
Sig 226 (in .40 or 9mm)
Hope this helps you in your quest.
