Whats up. I just joined Aceshigh and tried to fly with my keyboard and found out it was damn near impossible. Does anybody have an idea which joystick I should buy. Thanks

Buy a cheap one to start with, maybe a Saitek Evo or the likes, after that you will get a feel for what you want.

Everybody likes different things.

if you get the chance, check out an old Microsoft Sidewinder on Ebay or Amazon, the very best twisty stick available.

mine lasted 7 years then I got a new PC and it wouldnt take a gameport stick, since then ive used the saitek cyborg evo, cheap and nasty at first but you get used to it and its affordable to buy a new one each year when it breaks.

Here's what you really should have at a minium in a flight stick for AH.
A hat switch (for views)
A throttle control axis
A rudder contorl axis (many sticks "twist" in lieu of having flight pedals)
8 buttons

You can find a stick with all this for under $30 at most discount stores (made by Saitek (http://www.saitekusa.com/usa/prod/pcgc.asp) )

If you follow the Saitek link you'll see there are a number of price range/options depending on how much you want to spend.  Their contollers are good for thier price, though not as durable as top of the line controllers.

The top of the line, and widely regarded as the best flight controllers are by CH Products (http://www.chproducts.com/retail/index.html).  They are great, but not cheap.  I use CH Fighterstick, Pro Throttle, Pro Rudder.

Stay away from logitech sticks.  They do not make very reliable flight controllers.

I'm still using my Microsoft Sidewinder 3D Pro after almost 11 years.  I've never had a problem with it and used to pack it along on business trips so I could fly on my laptop in my hotel rooms at night.

Currently Saitek seems to have the best low price joysticks.

St290's, Aviators, EVO's all not that high priced and pretty functional in game.

Stay away from Logitech.

CH is the best but it costs a lot more.

I think the Saitek Evo, simply because it has the most buttons/options.
Ive never held a Saitek Aviator in hands, so I cant actually tell you too much about that one.

the aviator at first glance looks like it would have the same feel to it as a attack 3 my first stick and i wouldnt recomend it in 100 years

so evo

I've been doin this silly stuff over 10 yrs and use a Saitek evo.  Yes, they are the 'bic' lighters of sticks, but I like the funtionality of them.

.02 cents

The ST290 is a nice stick but has a short coming. All the buttons run along the top right beside the "hat".
The short coming occurs when you set up the "look up" modifier button. It's difficult to press down the button while using the hat. If views are 90% of a fight you give away alot but not having them.

Hope this helps.

Batfink, my bad...you were correct. I was thinking Kinks but meant the Yardbirds.

possible, but tiresome and difficult, and the end result will always be uneven and shoddy. there are a few people that do fly with the mouse, but there are only a handful that can actually fly well. there is a reason that a joystick is part of the system requirements raider ;)

Whatever you do, do not, I say do not invest in any Logitek(sp) sticks. I've went through 3 and none of them lasted over 20 hours of play without getting serious issues in spiking(ie a gentle vertical becomes a snaproll)or just no response(ie want to roll left and nothing happens).

The Saitek x45 was my next buy, and I was quite happy with it.

The Saitek x52 is what I am using now, and I have to say I am even happier with it after getting used to the difference in the resistance of the stick compared to the x45.

I would say the x52 would be your best shot. You are going to quickly become addicted to this game and it's one of the cheaper options that gives you a seperate throttle control and joystick.

My next move is the IR tracking(will give it a shot at least) and some CH gear, probably starting with the rudder pedals.

Just my 2 perks :)
