Looked up some more info on spits and i became particularly interested in the mk.V. I've seen that many Mk.Vc's were modified to gain +16 lb boost for about 3 minutes during 1942. Their performance wasn't sterling but it wasn't all that bad for a turn fighter either.
I was wondering if anyone has some information regarding the performance of a Spitfire Mk.Vc (trop) w/ Volkes filter and +16 lb. boost and/or +18 lb boost. After reviewing the performance of the regular +12 lb. boost Mk.Vc (trop) it's not very surprising as to why the RAAF wasn't doing to well in the PTO in mid-1943. The main thing I'd like to know is how the RAAF would perform with the +16 lb. boost version of the Mk.Vc (trop) (assuming the technical problems weren't as common) or what would happen if the had better filters like the Aboukir filter or if they had more LF Mk.V's.

We used to have the 1942/3 Vc with the uber boost.
It wasn't 3 mins, it was 5 mins.
This was ONLY a guideline.
The proviso was if they exceeded 5 mins they had to tell the crew chief so extra checks could be made on the engine, and this applies to ALL spits.
Pilots regularly exceeded the 5 mins guideline, the longest one I am aware of was a pilot being chased by 3 x 109's running WEP for 35 mins.
Goes back to how Rolls Royce tested the Merlins/Griffons -
1) Run it to destruction
2) Redesign/strengthen the part that failed
3) Go back to step 1
