Title: Dead?
Post by: cav58d on February 26, 2007, 07:30:04 PM
As of the past 2 weeks my game has been totally screwed...I play for 5-10 minutes and all of a sudden the spikes come....I'm using the right drivers.

Judging from these photo's does anyone have any idea whats going on?  Is my vid card dead?

I think you just found the Time Machine, or a Hyprodrive warp zone to get to other planets in one week.

Is my vid card dead

Yes... My card did the same thing a few weeks ago.... It was over heating, the fan wasn't running up to speed. Tried a new fan... but it was to late. Ran to hot to long...

Got a new card.... all is good again.

I just opened up my PC and pulled out the card...the freaken fan was filled with more dust than you could ever believe would accumulate back there...Anyways, cleaned the dust out with compressed air, put the card back in...Running a little better, but its still spiking.  Guess its time for a new card.

I only have a PCI slot.  Comp is 766mb of RAM.  Right now im using a Nvidia Geforce5200 fx PCI 128mb card.  What would you recommend buying?

it overheated.
Try cleaning and replacing the fan. It may be too late though.

That card is fried. Once it spikes, even once, for an instant, its all over.

If you continue to use it, your MB will fry, as well.

I have 4 cats, I clean out the pc's about once every couple of months.   also to help keep the video card cool, year or so ago i bought an extra card fan, has two fans.  inserts in the PCI slot underneath the agp slot and blows on the video card, not sure if it helps or not but it cant be hurting it

My ATI died in a similar fashion, except it wasnt an overheat issue.  The video memory controller failed, causing memory corruption.  Ran a few free diagnostic programs I found on the web, all found the same thing.

Is not, even I know its the fugalbinder, not the flux capacitor
Or worse, maybe the spitfires will all lose warp containment and go poof :)

So am I running any risk to the MB by keeping the card in use for net and word ops only?  I'm not playing AH again until I get a new card, but if the fan is overheated, can this hurt my computer as a whole?

Cav,

I think one of the other folks posted that yes you are risking your mobo with a bad vid card. If you are waiting for a really good card to arrive you could just go to the store and pick up a cheap base line card to do the word and number crunching stuff. It would be worth a few bucks to maintain your system.

Yes. If your monitor is on, you are using the damaged card. Maybe I am wrong, but I had to replace my 64-bit gaming system (thankfully was under warranty)
