Wow, I wouldn't have wanted this job in the army.

Thanks, interesting reading. Kind of scarey what type of world we'd be living in today if the USSR had decided to push across the East/West wall.

Reading Stalingrad by Antony Beevor, I am glad we didn't experience that situation.  The tenacity of the Russian soldier is amazing.

Hardly.  Russia only won because of German Stupidity and American Imports.

diablo.. if you are threatened with maybe being shot if you go forward and for sure being shot if you go backward it makes you brave.

machine guns at your back and aimed at you, manned by your fellows make you willing to go forward

While Diablo is wrong, this wasn't a very common tactic.  Nor were human walls a staple of the russian army.

Because of german stupidity, the russians held them off, and then finally severely outflanked them and caught them in the open.

laser.. you might want to research how many of each countries soldiers were executed by their own armies.  You might find that it was more common than you have said.
