Ok, having a blast guys. I'm just about a month in, and for this campaign Im Kills per Death 1.36.
Had alot of takeoffs that ended before I got off the runway to vulchers. Tough battle tonight.
I'm learning the p51 a bit more. I love it's seemingly powerful engine, however my favorite is the ki-84 with 50% fuel :)
I'm learning manuvers, that I have no idea what they are called...but I've taken several mid > low speed danger 6 episodes and turned the tables on people and kill them. :)
I am still clueless or confused about the following however:
-Landing. Seems like I have to slow down to JUST 1" above stall, then I can lower the gear without the Squeeeeeek sound. I tried with flaps down and it seems to make things even more stable. Of all the 'sims' out there I have played, I never felt this very fine line unless I was landing on a carrier with a jet. Something doesn't seem right here.
-I'm sure some of you already know the scissors manuever. Well...when I get into this, I seem to always end up in front of the guy battling for 6 because my plane seems to DIE from power and I just kinda flop around. So I have been throwing my throttle down to 0, flipping my flaps and turning sharp 180...powering up full with wep on, to get out of the situation and come back for at the very least, a head on show down (which I hate!) Any suggestions? Is the KI-84 a good climber? Seems to turn pretty tight.
-I had a great time with an f6f tonight. It seems to be able to turn ok, but has more verticle power and is better for manuver battles? Is this correct?
-My flaps won't go down in a low speed turn fight on the KI. I have to be going so slow in a turn that my plane is shuttering and about to hammer over. Suggestions?
Again, it's been a blast with you guys up there. *S* Knights!

Generally speaking, you want to be in the 150 - 140 ias zone when deploying landing gear. Flaps will provide additional lift and virtually all aircraft will deploy flaps at 150 ias. One notch of flaps usually works for me. Once flaps and gear are deployed, maintain 110 - 120 ias and pull back on your stick to induce a little flare as your wheels cross the RW threshhold.
Side note: if you need to bleed speed prior to deploying flaps and gear, set up a zig zag pattern on your approach to the field. As you bank left or right with your ailerons, apply opposite rudder...ie, left aileron = right rudder.
I'll leave it for the pros to address the KI/flaps question. Good luck!

To get flaps out in the Ki-84, you have to slow to about 170 mph before they will lower to the first setting, and close to 150 to get them fully down.
The Ki-84 climbs very well, but only at lower altitudes. It also has an unusual WEP mapping that allows for 90 seconds of WEP, with a 45 second recovery. Acceleration can be rated from average to good depending upon weight. Roll rate is excellent.
At very low speeds, the Ki-84 will dump a wing (usually the left wing) quite violently if flown into an accelerated stall.
As to the F6F-5, you can really tighten up the turn by using flaps. With full flaps, it can turn with or even out-turn every Spitfire except the Mk.V and Mk.I (even if the Spits deploy their flaps). There is little difference between the turn radius of the F6F-5 and the various F4Us. However, due to a dynamic instability in the roll axis of the F6F modeling, the F4Us are more stable near stall speed (especially noted at high angle of attack). I'm of the opinion that the F4Us are TOO stable under those circumstances. But, what we have is what we have to deal with and those who fly the F4U won't complain about that.
I will remind you that unlike dueling, flying in the MA with flaps fully out invariably means that you will be very slow and a choice target for any other enemy fighters lurking about you area. Thus, solid SA skills are required as well as good-sense flap usage. Don't use more flaps than you need and don't leave them hanging out for extended periods. While turn rate and overall maneuverability are critical in a duel, speed is an equally valuable asset in the MA. The most successful MA pilots use both wisely.
Learning correct flap usage will take time, and every aircraft has its own unique methodology to maximize performance.
My regards,
Widewing

Well said guys, I appreciate it.
I did well tonight in a p51 when I swore I would not fly one in a long time. I'm not in the fray down on the deck, I'm leading my shots and bouncing plans. At times, I am being chased - I pull straight up and over, flip the wings and fly 180 the opposite direction. Those foolish enough to try to pursue are usually at the verge of a stall and seemingly sitting ducks.
previously I was complaining about the sterility of the ammo on this plane. I have to retract that A BIT. Although they still seem under powered for the ranking of the ammo that's on there, I was able to score a few kills and ALOT of assists in two sortes with this pig. I was getting at least an assist on every dive, immediately after the dive, which to me means I put the kill shot on the guy but didn't do the most dmg.
I'm pretty happy with my performance so far. My ranking is in the 500-600's and for a newb in this game I think it's pretty good :) I just have to stop spawning when camped frustrated trying to kill the bad guys in a knock down war for a field. But, I guess that's why I am playing - to win! :)
I was watching something on the history channel the other morning while doing taxes, and it said the p51 was one of the longest range and best turning aircraft in ww2????????????????????????
I don't dare attempt to fly the p51 like I used to lol. Definetely not like a ki-84.
Now if I could only figure out why I am occasionaly getting a few jitters after installing this hi-res pack on a pretty kick butt system.

on the 51 set your convergence to where you usally open up fireing thus you hit close to or at convergence and learn where to place your shots and your assist to kill ratio will change.
for me this is at 400 others are known to run anywhere from 200 to 600 but i would not recommend the longer range as more dispersion of the rounds at that distance.
the 51 is a really good bird to fly in here but it is NOT a plane you want to up from a capped field to defend with as it has two major set backs to this role. poor initail acceleration and lack luster inital climb. the 51 is best when time is taken away from battle to remove these two problems.
flap use in the 51 is critical to being effective in it as with proper flap usage it will turn amazingly well without it is just another bnzer.
take the time to hook up with a trainer in the TA it will be well worth the time in returns in your ability to fly what ever bird you choose to fly. i hooked up with widewing for a few sessions and my k/d ratio shot up after he showed me i didn't really know what i thouhgt i did.
as far as ranking goes i agree that being in that range is not bad no longer then you have been flying but ranking in here means little to nothing in most cases. if you are true to yourself and fly to have fun and to enjoy your time in here then you can use the stats to see how you are improving over the tours BUT don't put to much wieght in the rank. i usally run in the top 50 in fighters at the end of the tours but i can promise you that thier is more then 50 pilots in here that can take me in a 1v1 fight and on any given day any given pilot can take out any other pilot if the situation is right.

agreed. I'm using it to gauge myself. I'm not worried about stats too much, although I do love stats :) - unless it got me more stuff in my plane of course :)
I would love to fly the jet some day, but I doubt I'll ever see those #'s to be able to fly that rig. I'm doing ok but it seems like one death and you are SOL for a long time before you can fly anything with higher points.
The ki-84 is an ok plane, but it is SO slow to me now. I like the p51 but like you said, its better with some speed. Still haven't found my total favorite. After flying so many different planes, the ki-84 screen is driving me nuts hehe.
I can lead my shots with a custom forward hat setting on the p51 and really nail them good :0 I've had some nice kills in this machine, the D version that is.
I'm also ok with the 47 but the eny on that is insane lately so I've been flying things with avg points to challenge myself as best I can.
