Title: Consistent Lock-Ups with new version
Post by: CyranoAH on December 07, 2001, 09:43:00 AM
Greetings,

I have been experiencing lock-ups every time I launch Aces High, be it online or offline.

It all opens up nicely, but some seconds after, the computer freezes and I can't even Ctrl+Alt+Del it, just reboot. In offline mode, I can even fly for some 20 secs or so and then freeze.

Never happened to me again... then again, I changed from a GeForce 3 to a GeForce 3 Titanium 500, but since it's almost the same card, this shouldn't be the cause.

My system specs:

AMD Athlon 800Mhz
640 Meg PC100 Mem
Creative GeForce 3 Titanium 500 64MB
Via KT133A chipset
Audigy Platinum eX sound card

I always play at max res. and color depth, mipmapping off and don't use paletized textures on.

Thanks for any help!

Daniel, aka Cyrano

PD: I have already tried to shut everything down except Explorer, et..., to no avail.

Why couldn't it ?

Maybe the 3D part of the card is bad ? I read and found it very true that you have to defrag after every new update now .

I have mini frezzes if I don't .

Be sure your AGP apeture size is set to 128 in your BIOS.  It is likely 64 by default.

This has solved crashing and lockup bugs for several folks I know if with GeForce 3's and VIA mainboards.

Thanks Leph, tried it but it only made the game to wait for 4 or 5 seconds more before it actually froze.

The thing is that the HD goes wild when I launch the game (the 3D part, not the options screen), be it offline or online... then after some 10 seconds, it freezes.

I'm reinstalling the older 21.83 drivers to see if it solves anything, but I'm not too optimistic...  :(

Suggestions are invited!  :)

Anyone visited any of the Nvidia forums to look into this?  I had the exact same thing, HD access, white screen, then the HD stopped and the system was locked down completely.  Only a reset/reboot got you going again.
I had the 21.83 and 21.85 drivers in place when I was having this problem.  I finally just yanked the vid card (GF2 MX400 64mb), put my old Viper back in, and completely cleaned out my system, reinstalled Win98, reinstalled the Diamond drivers, and here I am.
Still can't play AH very long, FPS runs in the 40's for a while, then "if" I get into a fight, the FPS drops to single digits.  If I can extricate myself and extend safely, the FPS come back up to the 40's.  I am theorizing that DirectX 8.1 may be a bit picky or buggy with some mobo/vid card/CPU setups.
FWIW, I am surprised that the various manufacturers making the GF2 MX/MX400 series cards are not embroiled in lawsuits galore.  I have not read of one happy owner yet, and I have been searching for answers to my own troubles and which led me to the various forums in the first place.  GF2 MX owners are experiencing a a variety of similiar problems, which I personally would summarize as the cards are pieces of crap, sold with the "GeForce 2" title to attract buyers, who are then stuck with a card that does not work correctly, and they cannot return for a refund or get any customer satisfaction.  Best Buy and VisionTek are two companies I am referring to, neither of which will get a penny of my business in the future.

This is from the AH Help FAQ.

I have a GeForce video card and my computer locks up after playing AH for a short time OR My computer intermittently locks up when playing AH and I have a motherboard using an AMD or VIA chipset.
If you have an Athlon processor this problem is due to a flaw in AMD's 750 "Irongate" North Bridge chipset.  There is currently no fix available, but there is a workaround.  First of all, download the newest AGP and IRQ routing drivers from your motherboard supplier.  Next, make sure you select AGP 1x as your AGP bus speed.

This problem also occurs in systems using VIA Apollo MVP3 chipsets.  The solution in this case is to download the newest AGP driver and IRQ routing drivers from www.viatech.com. (http://www.viatech.com.)   In addition, you should disable any settings in your bios referring to AGP "Turbo Mode" or VGA Pallet Snooping.  Known MB's with this issue include the ASUS K7 and a number of EPOX MBs.

If the above steps do not correct your problem, try searching for a newer bios version for your motherboard.

Thanks a lot Ack-Ack... I really should've RTFM  ;)

Trying it now, but reverting to the old 12.91 drivers have solved the problem so far for me... will update my AGP drivers as well though.

I'm also having wierd lockups with an Abit KT7A and GF3Ti500.  AH works fine for hours, even days sometimes, and then mysteriously locks up, usually in a mission or scenario.    I can't alt-tab out, or ctrl-alt-delete, BUT I can still talk on RW still for a few minutes, so the box isn't totally dead.  I have to reboot to fix it.

This problem has nagged me since I got this card.  Curiously, AH seems to be the only game I have troubles with... RTCW, CS, GPL have never given me lockups like this.  Nor has WB3, but I don't get much stick time there.   :)

Gonna try the AGP aperature at 128 and see if that fixes it.  Also, should I have AGP 4x enabled?

Cyrano, how the heck did you get the 12.91 drivers to work with a GF3 Ti500?  I can only use the 21.88 or later with mine.  If I try an earlier version, it doesn't recognize my card.  I tried telling it my card was GF3 (no GF3 Ti500 option) but when I rebooted, it was still in VGA mode.

system specs:
Abit KT7A, Athlon 1.4GHz, 1.25GB PC-133 RAM, PNY GeForce3 Ti500
Win2k SP2, DX8.1, all pre-SP3 hotfixes applied, latest Via 4in1 and VGA drivers

Has anybody tried reinstalling DX8?
