Title: Cool range pic
Post by: VOR on March 04, 2007, 02:40:11 PM
I snapped this shot today at the range I frequent. I think it came out pretty neat! The targets are Iron Maidens and from nearest to farthest are 275m, 300m, 400m and under the chevron 600m. The red and white square to the far right is the safetly limit for the range.

VERY black and VERY evil. :D

Yes, it's a Romak with an 8x POSP. My scope is actually from Belarus.
Are you in Cali or something? If so, sorry. :(

Edit: I see that you are in Cali. Yes, this rifle is certainly verboten there. Sorry, man.

It kinda surprised me that it came out. I figured the camera would auto-focus on something and the reticle wouldn't be visible. My camera has a digital viewing window, so I moved the lens around until I saw daylight thru the scope and snapped the shot.

Here's another one looking at a 200m target:

I don't remember what mine is. I think it is PSO 4x24 with laser and special light made also in Belarus. How well does it shoot at max range?

Edit: It is ПОСП 6x24

Russian, to tell you the truth it is easy to outpace a Romak or Dragunov with a conventional bolt-action rifle. 600m is as far as my range goes and as far as I've fired and that's probably also the outer limit of my ability to hit a target that size reliably. I fire 7N1 surplus ammo made in 1997 currently. If I fire run of the mill surplus ammo thru it, the accuracy suffers alot and it begins to behave more like what it really is: a big, fat AK.

There are some ergonomic problems with it such as the scope being mounted high over the action and slightly offset to the left. If I zero the scope for a 100m target and fire at say a 1000m meter target without compensating for the offset, my round could strike up to 10 inches to the left of the chevron. Throw some wind into the equation and it gets more confusing.

Within the rifle's intended role as a designated marksman weapon, it does just fine but I wouldn't want to compete with it against a guy firing a well tuned bolt action rifle. Scoring rapid, successive hit between 250m and 400m is actually pretty easy. At 600m with reasonably cooperative wind I can hit the targets about 4 out of 5 shots from a sandbagged bench, but I can't pick which part of the target I want the shot to go to. A personal rule of thumb with this piece is to keep my target zone within the confines of the aiming chevron. As you can see from the pic, at 600 the aiming chevron is hanging slightly past the edges of the silhouette.

Sweet rifle.

That is just too damn cool, Vor.  I am VERY surprised that shot came out the way it did.  The pics not bad either, :p !

I wish I had more time to take up shooting on a regular basis.  Every once in a blue moon I get to go plink with my Henry Golden Boty .22 lever action.  Hey, it's better than nothing.

Thanks guys. I took alot of snapshots before I figured out how to balance the rifle on the bags while balancing the camera and getting the lenses the proper distance apart to actually see thru the optics.

This range has only been recently opened to schmuks like me and it's the first time I've been able to fire some of my rifles and really stretch their legs out. I've learned alot about long range shooting thru trial and error and with the help of some of the old salty hands on the firing line.

Tune in next week for a WW2 episode: K-98k vs. M1. I think we all know who will come out ahead in that one, but it'll be fun proving it anyway. :D

What will the shooting parameters be and will they be shot scoped and without scopes?

It won't exactly be scientific, but it will be a perfectly good waste of some old ammo out in the garage. I'll be thrilled to get a hit past 300m with my Mauser but I expect hits possibly to 500 with the M1. Both will be unscoped and firing nasty, dirty inaccurate ammo. I'd take the M-44 carbine as well, but I'm not such a masochist anymore. In fact, if it's raining I'm staying home. :aok

If I was only a few hours drive away form you I'd have liked to join you out there.  I've had a jones for an M1 for a while now.  But to be able to fire that with a K.98 at the same time would be worth the drive.  Ummm, that is if you were offering.  :D

If you were within weekend driving distance it could be fun. You could use the range since you have a .gov ID card. If you pass thru sometime drop me a line and you're on.

Tell her you're going to tour the Jack Daniels distillery. She won't want to go on a trip like that, so we'll be free to go to Nashville after shooting. Bring plenty of $1 bills.

From what I hear, they are damn near out of Garands at the CMP.

However, they are getting shipments of M1 Carbines soon (from what I hear).

Any veteran can get access to CMP rifles pretty easily.  The rest of us have to work a little harder.

WW2 day at the range! As expected, the M1 easily outpaced the 98k despite firing some nasty Korean surplus from the 70s. I didn't score any hits at 500 like I had hoped to, but 400 was pretty easy. I didn't score any hits past 300 as expected with the 98k. (It hits about a foot to the left at 200 and I've never bothered drifting the sight.)

The 98k is a 1939 code 42 and the M1 is a late production run with SN in the 7 millions.

About 200 rounds downrange today in nice weather plus the usual shop talk with the other shooters.

Hey VOR, how long have you been at 101st?

I was there 90-96, 1-101 Avn.

PLEASE tell me you got to eat at Franks Hamburgers on Franklin street.

Is Clarksville still car dealerships with 21% interest and Krystel Burgers?

I had some good times there.

Interesting photos.  Here's a naive question for you: Is all long-range shooting via tripods, sandbags, or other gun rests?  At what distance do you generally go that way instead of offhand shooting?

Halo, that really depends on the size of the target. The targets I shoot at on this range are about 3 feet tall and 1.5 feet wide, so standing fire is viable to 300 or so. It'll even make you look good sometimes. :D Personally speaking, for distances beyond that an unsupported position with open sights gets iffy. It's good practice though and I should be doing it more than I am.

Tapakeg, I've been here a little over 4 years. Never been to that burger joint. I'll have to look into it. Yes to the car dealerships..and pawn shops..and check cashing joints..and bad $5 Mexican restaurants. Towns like this may change ownership of commercial property, but they never change.
