Title: Hard Drive Question

About a month ago my Hard Drive went kapoot, Roscoroo sent me a 20gb HD to get me up and running again. Recently Shuffler sent me a spaer 40gb Hard Drive. I originally planned to make the 40gb HDD my primary drive, but I cannot find my Windows XP installation CD, so I decided to set the 40gb HDD as the secondary drive. I connected the 40gb HDD as a slave drive, yet my computer saw it as the primary drive. I connected the 20gb HDD to the end of the cables where you usually attach the master drive, yet it still read the 40gb HDD as the primary drive and would not boot. I then tried switching the 40gb HDD to the end of the cables where the master drive would usually go since it seemed to be reversed, yet it still reads the 40gb HDD as the primary drive.
When booting I had to go to setup and turn off the primary0 drive (which was the 40gb HDD) and it will boot up using the 20gb drive, yet the 40gb drive is turned off and not functioning.

So... how do I set the 20gb HDD as my primary drive and the larger 40gb HDD as the secondary drive?

Is it possible for me to create a bootable cd to install windows XP using the files on my computer?

should be jumpers on back of each HD. make sure one is set master other slave, that should do it.

What NOT said.

You may have to visit the manufacturer web site for each of the drives in order to determine the correct configurations of the jumpers for master/slave assignments.(If you don't have any documentation on the drives.)

Using an application such as "Norton Ghost" allows you to take a "disk image" of a drive (can be C:), burn it to DVD or CD, then boot using the NORTON disk.
Norton asks for the location of the "disk image" and then where you want the image installed.(new drive).

I use this method for doing my periodic wipe/reinstall windows.
Of course my drivers,XP updates, desktops, favorites etc are just as they were when I made the disk image.:aok

A full reinstall of XP from disk is a drag when you start to think of all the crap you have to go through to get your box back the way you want it. ;)

set the primary drive to "Master"  (this is the OS drive)

set second drive to "Slave"  

hit del right as your pc post beeps and set the drives for auto detect in the Bios

now you should have bolth drives reconized .
