I'd like to see it so any icons 2.0 and greater are a lighter shade, and those that are closer a darker shade of the color selected. It would give a bit of 3d.
-
Well what I would like is a color-blend dependant icon brightness.
For example, if plane X flys over background Y, compare color palette background(sky, ground)->plane (visible angle (resultnumber = mean value of all visible colors of the plane), set color brightness of icon(enemy) to shade Z.
That way a blue camo plane will have a dimmer icon over water than a white plane on a dark background, for example. This would eliminate the pseudo radar tracking ability of the icon, and give a reason to use camouflage, or to fly a "circus-plane" when you're really out for a fight and not stealth.
My best regards,
Matt

I'd still like to see clouds have a bigger impact, maybe have the icon disappear outright.
-
personaly id like to see no enemy icons till about 1.5k in.
ok you have friendly icons and anything with out is enemy, maybe this would stop the pouncing on the slower plane by the 20 faster enemy planes if they didnt know what it was till they got close enough

Agreed, our clouds are just frame rate killers.
-
That would be cool to see enemy ICONS at distances of 4k only and friendly ICONS at 6k.
Also, clouds should reduce ICON when flown through them. :)
-
I'd like to see icons fade in from 0% at max-distance+1 to 100% at 3k yds, show chess-piece icons only to 1500yds, plane type from 800yds to 1500yds and plane type & model below 800yds.

Personally I'd like to see just a small red (or whatever color you choose for enemy) icon (chess peice) over or under the plane.
NO description (Bf109e, F6F, Typh, etc)
NO distance indicators (2.5, 1.5, 1.0)
IMO, you might as well be given a briefing on the the attack A/C (this is the plane I'm flying, this is the country I fly for and this is the distance to my plane) :huh
my 2 cents

Problem is there's no way to accurately judge range for most people. Historically that's what the gun sights were used to help do, but as I indicated in a thread on aircraft/vehicles not all aircraft's sights are the correct size to use the historical sight for judging range (*cough*F4Us*cough*).
-
MOIL, you fix your problem by pressing Alt + I.:aok

Historically, real life pilots misjudged the distance quite frequently even with gunsights in place. Therefore, the only sure distance was a distance where you could see the enemy plane so large in front of you, that it couldn't be any more than 150~200m out tops. Hence the maxim, "get in close, then closer". Anything further out than that was pure guess work with only a vague reference info provided by the gunsight, one's own identification training, and one's own experience and feel. We do not need an "accurate range", since there was no such thing as an "accurate range".
If you are not sure of the range in the game, then all you have to do is just close in enough so you are confident that your bullets will hit the mark without having to compensate for range. As it is, all the distance counter does in the game is just promote more spraying and long range sniping.
We already have the "+/-" closure rate indicator, so why in the world we need a separate range counter in 200yd ticks, is beyond me.

Well, think of it, if HTC didn't have that ticker, newer players wouldn't be able to find a fight, because they wouldn't see any other planes. Plus a lot of veterans would be complaining about getting shot down by their own team-mates. Simply because the newer crowd doesn't know how to operate the game controls yet. With this system however they can spot an enemy and know how to handle the situation to a minimal factor. Yet without anything, they're stuck asking, "Where the heck is the enemy? Nice scenery though." It's all about attracting people to come and stay, if a newer crowd can't find a fight, why on earth would they be enticed to stay?
-
I also would like an additional icon setting that is basically "Normal" but simply ceases to show range when it decreases below 1K. Then you are more prone to let the target fill the screen before firing.
An additional idea, at least to kick around, is that icons in the center of your screen be brighter, while icons on the edge of your screen be dimmed, corresponding to human vision where targets in a small cone of focus can be sharply distinguished, while those farther out from the center of focus are less distinguishable.
I like the idea of "growing intensity" icons as range decreases, and that icons disappear in clouds.
-
How about this idea? You can turn off various (range, country, AC model) icon settings as you wish. The harder (or more realistic) you make it for yourself, the more your own perk point mulitplier goes up. With the easiest setting turned on, then your multiplier goes down to a specified minimum. If that doesn't work for you, then perhaps the more challenging you make it for yourself, the cheaper the cost (a multiplier of sorts) for perk planes. Once this is working, add more perked aircraft like the A-26 or Meteor.
-
That's a great idea! Too bad only 1% of what is said here is accepted by HTC.
-
i wouls like an option for enemy icons to automaticaly turn off at anything under 500 yrds.
when i play H2H maps on free for all mode, i rarely use icons at all.

NewU423: I think I found one! [Starts Shooting]
Delholm: You retard! 7 Kills!
NewU423: Oh sorry
Delholm: Well...Look at your programmed buttons...Alt + I can judge FRIENDLY from ENEMY.
-
Good to know that wasn't me calling him a retard.:D

Why in the world wouldn't n00bs be able to find a fight without a distance counter? The icons are still there, just without the stupid laser-aim range finder.

Kweeassa..I'm with you 100%
Ask Chuck Yeager if he had icons to help him fight.
Check my Thread (nme/friendly icons) I was going after the same thing.
But I'm a whiner apparently.
Denholm..without going into a big thing, I agree that the info icons help out newer players but in the long run..I just makes fliers more lazy and develops bad habits.
I think a good compromise is -- red dot only on nme planes(4-5k) and Name only on friendlies within radio range
Seems that everyone is geared towards realistic plane performance..hell look at all the articles you can read, and ACM etc. why then turn on the info icons when it comes down to engaging. CLUTTER that real ww2 pilots never saw.
-
hmm..sorry..don't think I meant to direct that to Kweassa.
damn board gets confusing:)

I do understand what you're talking about. Maybe just place this option into the rotation of the "Alt + I" command. Because about 1 year after this feature is implemented, we will be having threads asking, "Can we have a method of selecting the icon we choose, such as we can choose if we want, 'enemy and friendly', 'friendly only', or 'none'."

:aok :aok :aok Den, nice idea:aok :aok :aok

We already have this option somewhere in keyboard mapping. :huh

Exactly, and if we change it, soon they will be asking for it again. Didn't you read what I said?:rofl
