I posted a simular issue in the DX8 beta forum ygsmilo and never received a fix/solution.  Since I use a cable modem with ZoneAlarm as my personal firewall versus a modem I get ZoneAlarm blicking in the systray instead of the modem icon blinking.  I too use Win98 (and a Creative TNT2 Ultra video card.)

I have to turn off ZoneAlarm if I want to run the DX8 Beta. I have no problems running the regular version of AH.

Hopefully someone out there with some software experience could explain how the icon animation works and how it might be conflicting with AH's game software.

In Windows 95/98, open the Dial-Up Networking Folder under My Computer.

Click on "Connections", from the Dial-Up Networking toolbar, then UNcheck "Show an icon on taskbar after connected".

As far as why the icon causes stutter,..well, the puppy uses quite a bit of CPU cycles to do the animation and continues to run, even when it is not visible.

I have no clue about Zone-Alarm as I do not use any personal firewalls.
