Title: Microsoft twisty stick
Post by: VWE on March 08, 2007, 07:24:25 AM
Anyone have an old twisty stick or sidewinder 2 laying around that they don't use and would be willing to sell me? I'm in Iraq, just got internet hooked up and would love to get back into the game. I'll even let you beat me in a 1 on 1 dogfight then come here to the boards and tell every peelot how great of a virtual peelot you are. <--- take note Rip, your chance to win a 1 on 1! :D

I have 3 but none are 100%

One has no force feedback, one the hat views only work part of the time, and the third one will kick in rudder any old time it feels like. Wont even hold auto pilot.

I had heard a rumor, probably on this board, that someone had bought the right to produce those sticks and were getting ready to re-release them. Course I'm still waiting... I think for the money those things were the best sticks I ever bought. And I got so used to the rudder on the stick that it was almost a sub-conscious thing to tweak it a little to line up that shot.

Were? It's the only stick I'll use. 5 years and running.

I hope they do start making them again. Nothing else compares, and Ive tried a bunch. To me CH stuff feels really plastic and flimsy.

Shipping to Iraq might be a biotch!

I've got the first generation (with the twisting dome throttle) gameport. Eventually I'll need to replace it, as after a couple years of solid use my hat's acting up.

I'm curious if the USB versions offer any added stability or longevity over the first generation of analog ones. Anybody know if there's any appreciable difference?

I think I've had my usb version for about eight years and it works great. I haven't used it every day for eight years but its still seen a lot of use. I was in a puter store today and stopped to look at an X-52. Looked okay but I still love my Sidewinder and hope it continues to live long and prosper! Fortunately, when my passions are inflamed mid-game I still manage to maintain enough control of my right hand to not unduly stress the stick!

I find that my Saitek ps33 is very similar in feel.  The hat is almost exact in precision too.  As in, not very.  The slightest slip and it reverts to the next pos or center.  Not bad but , like I said - the stick is almost the same really.  The benefit of the ps33 is it has lotsa buttons that I used up for all my in game functions.
Even has a little flip down flap that covers the red light bomb or sec weapon button :)

Here is the BEST part of this stick however.  There is a larger button below the hat button that normally would annoy, BUT if you set it up for look up - using the base of your thumb AND the hat allows you to look all over teh place really quick!

I'm liking it, and until I find something that could double my look up that has more precision to it, that doesn't break the bank...I'll be using this stick.

I guess I could use another button from the left hand on the joy base that would allow me to have that upper view also, but I have all of those set to flaps, gears, voice global and range, and map.

I would seriously consider this as the best stick for the money for THIS game at least.

Saitek ps 33 - ~ $40.

What I don't like about the Saitek is... can't they make the frikin thing any larger? I know, I know its go lots o buttons but all I want is a few buttons and something that feels comfortable to hold. Those frikin Saiteks almost feel like I have to strap it on and no Saitek has even half the durability of the old sidewinder. Just my .02 cents...

Just a heads up but the thrustmaster Fox 2 usb is the closest thing to MSPP2 that ive ever used , and i went threw alot since MS quit making them (BASTAGES) . I was so used to the PP2 ( used pp1 and 2 for almost 10 years)  that i still can't play like i used to with any other stick .

Krusty

I have at current count 4 of the older Precision Pro Sidewinders with the dome type throttle & gameport. Wife keeps finding them at the secondhand store for 2$ and brings them home. Want one? The ones I've plugged in were all in near new condition, everything still crisp & clean.

I also have a pair of Precision 2 USB sticks. This is my current preferred stick.
Got the last one off eBay for 28$ including shipping just for a spare.
I prefer the throttle/button setup, and its USB so its easy.

No need, its the least I can do for what you are doing.

Also on the Saiteks, the X-52 is much larger then the X-45s and its adjustable on top of that. Mine has held up very well but it seems like thats hit and miss.

The only drawback is that the saitek is pretty large.  The stick itself is tall and takes a BIT of getting used to, but no biggy.

Also - the Hats on both of these sticks (ms and saitek ) need a piece of sandpaper glued onto their hats.  I haven't done it on the ps33 yet as I haven't had a chance (and my rc glue is all dried up yet less than a year old!).

The ms stick with the sandpaper piece placed on the tip of the hat really helped me.  I expected it to get worn out quickly but 3 months later it really still was just fine.  Although I didn't fly every night or anything.

The Saitek WILL benefit from a sandpaper piece glued on, because the bottom thumb portion resting on the upper view or whatever you use it for, will cause the top portion of the thumb to need a bit more traction.  At first, I hated the stick because of this - now that I use it as part of the integrated hat function - be it intentional or not : this was the BEST thing they could have come up with.

Ghost thanks, but it's not needed yet. Mine still works fine for the most part. I was just curious if (when the time comes) there was any benefit to getting the USB version.

Not really a lot of difference.

I prefer the Prec 2 USB's button layout on the stick better, easier to use.

Throttles are actually about a tossup, no big advantage either way.
