Title: Trying my hand at a Mustang...
Post by: Treize69 on March 11, 2007, 05:02:39 PM: Pierce McKennons P-51B "Yippee Joe" from spring of 1944, forerunner to his more famous "Ridge Runner" series of P-51Ds. Pierce was an avid fan of Western novels, hence the noseart- a cowboy riding a bucking Mustang. Several squadron pilots would swear for years that they saw him reading one of his beloved novels at 25,000 feet over Holland at the controls of this Pony.

Still a long way to go, no panel lines or weathering added yet, and all the little standard P-51 stencils are still missing, but the markings are pretty much done except for some minor tweaking and realigning. Not bad for 1 afternoons work :)

Using a couple of different bits, including more detailed wheels, gear bay, and a prop with shading.

I'm not a big fan of the "plain" BMF ponies, as we've already got something like it already, but you've got one with some unique nose art.

Better closeup of the noseart, meant to post this one the first time around. Needs to be cleaned up a good bit and still tweaking the exact size and position of the noseart, but its a start.

Looks good so far. It'll look better with some metal colorizing on it. And panel lines.

Yes its similar in that its a Mustang with a red nose. As was every P-51 they flew from April '44 to May '45...
