Title: AvA settings
Post by: Noir on March 12, 2007, 01:23:30 PM
I've been playing AvA sunday and is that normal that ground objects stay down for only a few minutes ? I hit a town and it poped in the time I took to reload at the field 20miles away.

Is that arena supposed to be a furball arena ? If yes why do we have C47's ?

Noir those settings may change from setup to setup.

I can say for mine that field capture would not be the focus. For others in the AVA staff it might be. That would of course adjust the down time of objects/ack/ and the number of troops required to capture something.

please call me nuke :)

Ok about the settings ;) that would make sense with the poor jabo performance of russian and japanese planes in AH.

It is important to remember there is no "win the war" in the AvA.  "Resetting" the map porks the arena until a staff member can be found to apply the proper settings again.  For this reason, base captures are usually made more difficult, either through reduced down times, increased troop requirements or both.

Why leave base captures enabled at all, you ask?

The AvA is about the historic matchups and the fights.  For some, this means having some type of "mission" or a goal to accomplish.  Although the mechanics of a base capture are "gamey" to put it mildly, it is one mechanism that is obvious, available and easily understood by all who play the game.

In the Battle of Britain maps, groups will sometimes come together and set up a German bombing raid on London (the HQ).  The purpose isn't really to take down the HQ, but rather historic flavor of a mission and the resulting fight -- can you possibly survive?

On several occasions, AvA squads have come in and done a capture mission while others have tried to deny them that.  The base itself wasn't so much the goal as finding out "do we have the skill to pull it off."  It's the same theory as the bombing London scenario, only using a different mechanism.

I hope that helps.

pretty well stated brauno.

I recall on one mid war set up which was done on the BoB map we (JG54)ran a terrorflieger/jabo run to the london area in 190A5s  I think we had two schwarms in attendance but it may have been three.  we hit our targets, which was to disable a bomb**** base and we fought our way back to france.  that was 190A5s against spitwads and woobietards at low level.  I believe six members RTB'd two with multiple kills all of us with at least one kill.  it took one hour total from form up to touch down and it was one of the most memorable nights in the AvA for me.

it was possible because of the low fuel burn and because of the unique way the AvA is played.

Well I see the reasons for those settings and they make sense to me but...

I would like it if the stuff stayed down and base capture was turned off, with the longer down times it would disable features at the base for a period of time making the other team relocate in order to stay competative.
And with the low number of players in the AvA arena base capture would be counter productive, so Isay lengthen the down time of structures to make base defence very important, but disable base capture.

Also it has been a few years since I have flown but back then the historical arena was "icons" off. I rather liked that because it make team coms more important, I think radar should be enabled but all blips the same color. this would increase intensity as your situational awarness must be tuned way up at all times. You want radar (base defence) but knowing who is who shoudld be a "wou'll know when you get there" thing, unless you asked who is where on the radio.

sorry if I ramble. :D

To my knowledge Aces High never had an "icons off" setting for staff to use in an arena. Only players could turn that on and off.

The only icon settings the Admins can do is adjust when the FULL icon range kicks in... ie. SPIT becomes SPITIX or 109 becomes 109F4 etc..
