Title: RWY headings.
Post by: BBBB on March 13, 2007, 02:08:06 PM
It would be nice to see the diffrent runway headings of fields when you pull up the field stats. This way you can line up for your bomb run basied on maps that are already out there for the diffrent types and sizes of fields. This is info a bomb crew or fighter pilot would already have had on hand. Thanks to the morning brief.

As far as I know, every small airfield has the same orientation. Every medium the same orientation. Every large the same orientation.

You should be able to check the clipboard map and, well, there ya go!

The symbols on the map do not always line up with the runways.

Yes, so ignore the symbols. Every small airfield will be SW to NE, for example. Am I right on this? I thought they were all the same layout, regardless of the icon.

Didn't realize that.

Now you got me questioning myself, though.

Well, I think it's safe to assume they all have the same orientation, unless the map-maker can flip/rotate a tile in the TE. I'm not sure if they can.

Every field and strat target is oriented to the map exactly as they appear in the clipboard maps (i.e the top of the clipboard map is always to the north on the main map).

Can't get much more specific than that.

[EDIT]  Krusty, you were right to begin with.  All similar targets are aligned exactly the same and the same as the clipboard maps.

The small picture of the runway on the main map does not line up with the real runway if you where depending on that to line up with when trying to land or bomb.  I never paid attention that all like fields where set the same way though.

clipboard maps are your friend. We're not talking about the icons on the actual clipboard map either, we're talkin about the detailed pictures of the airfield layouts you can get => right click on the map and select 'clipboard maps' then pick either small, medium or large airfield, then you'll see what we mean.

How to tell if its small, med or large? Small airfields have an icon on the map which has a single runway, medium airfields have an icon which has two runways, large airfields have an icon which have three runways.

everything you need to plan bomb/jabo runs perfectly

I've found on MOST maps, the runway/V-base orientation is the same. There are those maps that screw it around a bit, and I find on my bomb runs it has a similar effect to, say, that inconvenient cloud that hangs in the way of your drop point. Doesn't really bother me overall.

Well and that is why I asked. The map we were playing on the other night in the LWO the runway headings did not line up with the clip board. And they were not all the same. So it seem that while the case may be that on some maps that they are all facing the same way and line up correctly it seems some of the maps they do not. It just seems easier to add them into the clip board just as a quick ref guide.
