Title: Realistic speed of sound
Post by: moot on March 14, 2007, 10:44:09 AM
We already have doppler effects, why not make the sounds' speed realistic too?
Instantly hearing an explosion from 5k out is a bit strange.

Not just that, when a plane started going down into a dive the plane made a special noise from the air coming so quickly through the propeller.

To this day, the only game or simulation I have ever seen this modelled in is Operation Flashpoint (as well as its excellent successor, Armed Assault).  They also programmed lunar cycles and tides, constellations which change with time and season, and sound propagation off of hills.

If more game developers had that sort of standard ...

I'd say that and sound immersion is in the future of simulation.

I love hearing the sound of cannon fire behind a split second before the actual round hits me.:lol

If they have blood in the cockpit, then if a GV gets hit they should make a loud "rrriiiiiinnnngggggg" sound for a minute to simulate losing your hearing for a while. :D

Best Regards

I wouldn't wanna hear myself lose my hearing. Chances are you would with that kind of an electric ring.

Until you turned the volume to 0 in the game options. :noid

By that time Skuzzy would pop out of the screen and slap you for not listening to a feature you requested.

now that i think about it, it would be nice if your target heard you gunfire after the bullets hit/pass instead of when you pull the trigger.

Yep.  I wonder if any of the rounds we have can manage two shots within the target hearing them.

My now-ancient sound pack had a tank hit sound that some folks actually got scared of. Apparently the horribly loud CLANG! was a little too real :D Audio-wise, the ringing ears effect isn't that hard to do. Just make it the GV hit sound and run it for a good 15 seconds in length. Sort of a stretched version of the HL2 effect. That'd do it.

Flakbait, is your sound pack hosted anywhere?

Nope. My ISP doesn't offer me enough space, and I'm on dial-up so sending 35+ megs of sounds that way is simply a pain. For a while HTC was hosting it; I'm not sure if they would again, but it certainly would be nice if they did! Aside from one or two minor hiccups getting fixed, my pack hasn't changed since '02 when the last little bit was released.
