Does anyone know the name of the project where the US Air Force monitored humans in ovens at 400 to 500 degrees?
I just can't get the right key words in a search engine to pull it up.
It was in the late 50's or early 60's. Saw a show on TV a few years ago. Mentioned it to someone at work, and now I can't find a decent link to an article on it.
Closest I found was a blurb in the Guiness Book of World records, but I can't access the full text.

they were some extensive test, they included a man, a dog and other live animals while turkeys were roasted but I don't think the temperatures exceeded four hundred degrees fahrenheit. the tests were in conjunction with the RS71 project before the inept and treasonous president johnson blew the designation during a televised broadcast and changed it to SR 71.

Went to the library to get access to the online edition of the 2005 Guinness Book of World records. On about page 55 if anyone wants to double check.
Only states that during Air Force tests in 1960, men were able to endure temperatures of 400 degrees F while naked and up to 500 degrees F when heavily clothed.
Doesn't give a project, nor any other reference. Sucks!

I always wondered how hot some of those fire suits got on the inside.

We are mostly water and pretty much boil at 212 degrees. I think someone could endure 400 degrees for a very short time. Proper clothing, however, can make a huge difference. I used to be a firefighter and was amazed at how effective my turn-outs were. I crawled up as close as I could stand to a huge bon-fire in turn-outs once. I took off a glove to feel the difference and the heat stung instantly.

That's because as the fire gets bigger, the biggest heat transfer function of it switches from convection to radiation.

I bought a few fire-entry helmets (the silver space-man kind) at an auction once. I put one on and had a friend spray lit WD-40 from an aerosol can in my face (I had a turn-out coat on underneath). It’s pretty wicked to watch a stream of fire come right at your face and just wrap around you. You feel the radiant heat, but it’s tolerable. I’ve done it to my wife; for awhile it was a regular party activity, all visitors to out house got the fire-in-the face treatment. It was always a big hit and left everyone in hysterical relief.

If they were on their way to the outhouse, the only relief they must of had was crapping themselves :rofl
