I think I've seen this movie.
If it's the one I'm thinking of there's a scene in it where the stalker has grown two more brain cells and realised that he's screwed with the wrong guy and short of immigrating he's never going to be safe. So he seeks the help of a fat bearded guy in a delusion that it will alter his predicament. It doesn't. Fat bearded guy's bumbling attempt to eyeball the stalkers problem at an auto parts shop just gets his mug logged for further investigation and future reference... cell phone cameras are so handy.
It's a long movie, but it has a typical and worthy ending; the stalker dies. A small army of fat bearded guys- let alone one- couldn't save his sorry arse

It's a shame no one makes a simple FPS where eye candy takes a back seat to real physics and solid gameplay, like AH.

i give you half life 2
-
oh.. it's not a movie
nevermind
-
Nick, HL2 does only basic physics.
For example, the ballistics are fake.. There's no penetration. Or are you thinking of a mod that's modeled things that realisticaly?

STALKER will probably fit that bill nicely, and give you the eye candy too. From what I’ve managed to find this game will be a blend of Rainbow Six/OP Flashpoint FPS and Fallout RPG elements. Different ammunition has different penetration and damage stats and the characters have armor that absorb or reduce damage if hit in the covered area. If you get hit you start to bleed and have to use bandages to stop losing health to blood loss, and you have to eat to keep your metabolism up so you regenerate health and fatigue. You also need meds to help fight radiation poisoning.

That sounds fun - shame about the AI, though, it looks like it's as stupid as any AI from the last 10+ years of FPS's..
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1hpa1_gunfight-dans-stalker
Multiplayer could be very fun, though.
But about the physics, does it really calculate the ballistics, or is the penetration/deflection made by fixed coefficients?
-
Watching that clip I don’t see your point about the AI. It looked competitive to me. (Note: the dogs are blind mutants that hunt by smell alone.)
I have no idea about the ballistics. Probably not calculated.

On the AI:

It just looks stunning!

-
Moot.. AI in this game is supposed to be awesome.
-
should get my copy tomarrow so ill let ya know:cool:
-
Make sure you do! :)
-
This might sound anal, but honestly, in that video I linked - what's that guy doing shuffling his feet instead of taking cover, or anything else of any use?
There's an attack on their base, or whatever it is, and they just sit around waiting for the player to trigger them out of AI idleness mode.
I'm only basing this on one small video, but in my experience, it looks like however good the AI may sometimes be, it's going to suck that bad at least some of the time.
AI is a tough nut to crack, apparently. I'm anxious to see what Crysis does with theirs... one of the devs said in an interview, that if weapons or enemies (AI) were to be chosen as the one pivotal point for a good game, AI would be the one.
I personaly think both matter equally (as a fight with crap weapons turns to mush quick), but it should mean Crysis' AI is at least as good (or fun at least) as Farcry's...
-
I hear ya moot and im hoping beyond hope that stalker lives up to the hype. lots of us have been looking at it for a loooooong time waiting for its release so theres been alot of buildup just between us not to mention the regular hype.
It has alot to live up to but, it promises to be something awsome!
I havent been on there site much until recently BUT, in the past the grafics engine as well as alot of the "new" stuff is supposed to be alot different working more fluidly if thats the right word.
most of the video's i've seen in the past were from beta tests and bug hunting sessions and its hard to judge a game till its actually released. we shall see tho.

Got a copy from BestBuy for 40$. 5 more hours until I can play it...

See Rule #16

Well...? What's the verdict? :O
-
I have a question for someone who has it... does it let you map joystick axis to views (like the Joystick X axis to left right view, and Y axis to up/down)?
-
I have *seen* the box in the house, my GF bought it for my birthday... I can't open it for another week, WAAAAH!!!! :cry :cry :cry

By GF do you really mean BF?
Just kidding!
It sucks when they do that!
My wife does the same thing. "I bought something you really wanted and could have gotten yourself but I got it first so you have to wait 11 months till your birthday."
After 24 years of marriage she doesn't even try to hide the maniacal laughter.

hehe same thing happened to me. I made the mistake of putting a joystick on the XMAS list so i had to fly with mouse for almost a month :D
-
I signed in the express post receipt as I leave for work one hour after her... didn't see the box itself, but the package ticket had a name I couldn't mistake for anything else ("S.t.a.l.k.e.r PC DVD") ... I didn't mention anything, but have been biting my nails ever since!
will have to wait till the 31st (possibly April 1st ...with a hangover) :cry :cry :cry

What happened to WilldCrd? Is the game so good he can't find time to post or did he die from accute disappointitis?

Hullo all... For those who are interested, I just ordered this from gogamer.com in a bundle with Quake 4, for about $40. I've never done business with them before, so I can't vouch for the site, or the deal.
http://www.gogamer.com/S-T-A-L-K-E-R--Shadow-of-Chernobyl-with-Quake-4-PC-Games_stcVVproductId10487548VVcatId444758VVviewprod.htm
Edit: I have strong doubts about this game... too much is made of a supposedly amazing AI for me to believe. I have a feeling it'll turn out like Black & White - the AI seems intelligent at first, but as you go deeper you see that it's all scripted reactions, and not dynamic in the slightest.
-
It's fun... but different. As with any new game, you're going to need a few hours to get used to it. To be honest I was dissappointed in the first half hour... partly because the graphical settings were being tweaked and the default difficulty setting was at 'master'... took 1.5 clips to waste one dude. :) Slowly digging it after 3-4 hours of play.
Graphics - Purdy I suppose, system specs limit me (A64 3000+, 1g ram, X800). Low poly count in general. Textures are ok, somewhat muddy at max settings. Enemies have a low model count; eg, a whole camp of 'bandits' were basically the same dude. I have an X800 and it never ran dynamic lighting very well, so I'm arsed into static lighting only. It's pretty overall, but it lacks the 'wow' effect (ala HL2).
AI - Not bad!, but also strangely retarded in some cases. Like moot said, the groups tend to shuffle their feet and slowly creep towards your cover. They don't seem to be aware of eachothers position, ie a group of three will shuffle slowly (in line), through open terrain towards your position, all while taking massive amounts of fire from you or allies. Guns tend to be very inaccurate (think massive cone of fire, seemingly randomized bullet locations) so they may make it far before reconsidering their death march. Too easy to find a big tree, lean out, and headshot them one at a time just a few feet away. Your mileage may very... depends on your fighting style I guess. I havent advanced enough to see many enemy tactics.
Interface, keymapping, and other stuff - Won't recognize extra buttons on the MX518... grr. Crouch and additional 'low crouch' seems strange for sneaking, you'll know what I mean.
Player movement feels clumbsy and rigid. Crouching is instantaneous. Moving from a jog to a sprint is also instantaneous (and feels like 30mph!).
I dunno, overall I dig it. Just getting to some creepy bellybutton monsters. One dude used a sort of psi attack: the screen blurs and you will hear a very nasty high pitch ringing, supposedly simulating some funky brain boiling effect. I Felt dizzy for a second, then naded the ****er and all was well. :D
-
but can you map the views to a joystick axis?

I dont see any stick support. Buttons/axes refuse to map.

Looks like the atmosphere will be the game's best feature. I'll probably get it just for that.

Bummer :( I hear HL2 does have axis support, might have to check that out.

I'm kind of worried for WilldCrd now. Where could he be?
-
Probably stuck playing the game... Ooooh how I dislike him right now ... :o  :furious

So far I'm enjoying Stalker. The graphics are nice and the game is running smoothly for me (4600+ X2, 7950GT). I have everything on high and at 1280x1024 res...oh and this is under Vista. I do get the ESC/gamesave crash on occasions, but I can live with it until the patch.
It takes a while to get use to the gameplay. The nice part is the randomness of things. Also the AI seems to be pretty dang good so far. The enemy troops tend to work together on pinning you down while others try to flank you. Doing Rambo style will get you killed ASAP. Also I like the weapons effects and the un-laser like accuracy found in most games. They do a nice job with recoil of the weapons.
I'll probably be playing this game for quite a while. I need to try the multi-player this weekend.
-
After last night's marathon, I agree 100% with Mak's assessment. :) ... minus the foot-shuffling bandits.
It gets progressively better as you advance. I found some bad bellybutton equipment on a mundane side mission, worth serious coin. In the same general area, I came across Gordon Freeman's carcass with a diary mentioning Black Mesa. :D He had a bad bellybutton .45, kinda resembles a desert eagle.

Hey Makarov, are you finding it a tad easy to come across cash? I dont think I'll ever have a problem buying top end stuff should they come about.

uh... It's called an easter egg... did I mention anything about the plot?

Octavius, from the look of your weapon selection you are a lot further along than I am. However so far I have been able to keep supplied just fine. I do have a shortage of 5.45 and 9mm ammo though.

lol sorry between work and a buddy laying his bike down i have been away from the pc.
As for the game, I have a higher end machine so grafics are GREAT awsome in some cases.
took awhile just to get past the first stage before i realized i was set to max difficulty :O
most of what octavious said was spot on the monsters will give ya nightmares

Well I got it, what a disappointment... it doesn't even support 3D :(

All the years and all the hype have left me disappointed in this game now that I have played it. There are multiple endings, but the one I ended up with was very very lame.

I agree there. I'm restarting new game due to patch and making it extra hard because as difficutly is increasing, so does enjoyment for me. I turned off crosshair, and set difficulty to master on options and 'new game' ....it's hard....but at least it feels that AI has same health as me.

The patch is not compatible with your saved games, so you'll have to start a new game once you apply it.
One good single-player change is that now money is worth something. Traders have some decent items (The Trader Cid has a Merc Suit and Stalker Suit for sale, which is cool). The bad news is that now armor degrades (after a while your %15 rad protection suit drops down to %4 rad protection), and people can't find a way to repair it. This is gamebreaking IMO, as it's unfair to expect me to keep finding new SEVA suits. And no, the Freedom base vendor dude does not repair armor in the patch, according to some Stalker forums.
A great game, but it could have been so much more. It feels buggy and unfinished. Disappointing...

Where can I get the patch?

Blows harder. I came across a SEVA suit and bad bellybutton weaponry early on by wandering into non mission areas. I thought I was lucky and felt invincible for a bit. I am now to the point where these weapons are common (for the given location and area of plot). It just gave me a bad feeling about the pacing and development of one's character. Seems disjointed ya know?
A great game, but it could have been so much more. It feels buggy and unfinished. Disappointing... [/B]
Agree. Broken and incompletable missions are my biggest annoyance. I can't gain certain factions' trust due to the mission leader accidentally offing themselves; unable to collect reward. NPCs and fellow stalkers aren't very interesting. You meet one and you've met them all... stalkers have little or nothing to trade.
Good intentions, great concept, under developed, and meh.

I had pretty much the same gear loadout as you, Oct, but I patched and restarted, and am now very upset that I'll eventually get a SEVA and be unable to repair it.... I patched in the hopes that the various unspecified gameplay and balance issues would be worthwhile, but now I don't know.
Fortunately it's still a fun game, but it won't be epic like Fallout is. Speaking of which, supposedly Fallout3 is in the works. :)

Link on Fallout3? Fallout 1 and 2 were Awsome.

There's very little news about it, but the rights are acquired and supposedly Bethesda is working on it.
http://www.gamespot.com/news/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=25330416
[UPDATE] The official story: Taking time out of a multicity trip, jet-setting Bethesda vice president of marketing Pete Hines got back to GameSpot. "Yes, we have said before folks are working on it and have been, but we won't say what stage it's in," he said. "In short, no, nothing's changed, no details, no platforms, etc. We give the same answers regardless of who is asking. It will be a while still until we unveil, until then we aren't saying anything."
-
Did you just quote an article that says it doesn't say anything???
I sill hate you all until this week-end.
-
Yep! All anyone knows is that someone is allegedly working on Fallout3. :)
-
Think I'll skip this patch and wait for the next one. I'm having very few problems with the game as it is now.
-
Quick question. The box says you have to have a 64k connection to play. Does that mean to play every time or just the first time? I only have dial up so I need to know before I buy it.
-
I wish I had done so, instead of wasting all my work. Now I'm stuck with a degrading SEVA suit whose stats will be the same as a Bandit jacket after a few missions. :(
-
As I know for this moment, there are 7 different ends. 2 of them are true ends and 5 are false.

You don't need a connection at all to play the single player game, only for online "death match" type multi player games.

True/false? How can a end be "false"? :huh
-
Because you didn't find out a secret about the thing at the end. :)
I just beat it, but replayability enjoyment drops way down due to all the bugs and general gameplay annoyances, so I won't play STALKER again until GSC gets the problems fixed.
-
The game developer has now released the SDK for Stalker. As a result a number of mods have been released on the Stalker forums at GSC:
http://www.gsc-game.com/index.php?t=community&s=forums&s_game_type=xr&lang=en
Including a mod that allows traders to repair your armor and weapons, a realism mod, a realistic trading mod, a weapons mod, and more.
:)

A short revival of this thread to say that if you've missed this gem until now, there isn't any reason to delay it further. I bought the metal case version with the map of the zone for 10€. Applied the patch 5 and it works fine (only one crash during the whole WE).
I like it... a lot. The atmosphere is deliciously creepy, it doesn't feel as linear as HL2 by far (although a good part of the events of the main plot are scripted) and the firefights are brutal even at the veteran difficulty setting. AI is mostly good to very good (with the occasional dumb move but it is not a real intelligence after all).
On my old AMD 64 3200 2GB RAM with ATI 9800 Pro (128 MB ram), it runs nicely on med details and static lighting... and it looks pretty good already.
I must be 1/3-1/2 into it and I can't wait to go back home to play it some more... I recommend it highly. Yay for commie game designers ;) :aok
-
A great game. IMO as good as any of the top FPS ever. Buggy at first release and not as open as expected (and a few nagging bugs even now), but... The atmosphere and patched versions really deliver, IMO. More recently, liked it far better than COD4 and as well as HL2 and Bioshock -- of course in its own unique way. Really love the universe they created and the (fairly) open flow. The prequel is coming out in a month or so and promises to be even less linear.
