Title: Are American funnies outdated?
Post by: 1K3 on March 19, 2007, 05:11:32 PM
With the popularity on manga having swept across the world, I've wondered if American comic strips (funnies) have been left behind. When I was young the only people reading comics were young boys and young men. It was hard to find a girl that read comics other than Archie and the daily funnies. And because most boys looked to comics for action (super hero comics), they often turned to the funnies for laughs (and MAD magazine of course!). Now with all the manga in stores, the internet to amuse us, and all our tv channels it seems to be difficult to find anybody that actually enjoys the local paper comic strips. So lets find out how many peeps here actually enjoy reading the funnies.

When I read your post I had no idea what manga is, still don't.

But I will google it.

Well, I think they are.  But that's not due to the quality of outside material, but the degradation of our material.

I quickly glanced over the sunday comics when I was home this past week.  The two biggest comic strips were a strip about a menopausal woman's problems, and a strip about a couple of black children commenting on racial problems.

I've read MAD comics for a while, but it just never seemed funny.  I've heard it was funny before a head writer left in 1992.

But I'm going to have to pin the death of American Comics to January 1st, 1995.  When the last Far Side comic by Gary Larson was printed.

Freelance comics are trying really hard though.  http://www.pbfcomics.com is a great place, but isn't printed anywhere.

Every day I read the newspaper comics. I NEED a good laugh everyday.

I wonder if Snoopy's ears are untangled yet?

My entire family reads the Sunday comics.  They are not as good as when we had new Peanuts every week or when the Far Side and Calvin and Hobbs were running but once in a while you'll get a good one.  Get Fuzzy is showing some promise.

I wouldn't touch that manga stuff with a ten foot pole.

Manga by far is superior to US comics these days. I was a fan of the comics back when they were funny, but now they are just "meh".

Garfield is still funny, but I miss Far Side, Calvin and Hobbs, Robotman (why did he leave the strip anyway), and many others that escape my mind.
